SCOTLAND'S women meet Russia at Tynecastle on Sunday hoping to take a step towards their first-ever qualification for the European Championships.

The Russians will prove difficult opponents in this first leg tie, and Glasgow City midfielder Megan Sneddon knows they must take something from the match to have any chance of making history.

She said: "We desperately need to get something. Russia is a very difficult place to go to."

Scotland could not have landed more difficult opponents and, to make matters even tougher, prolific goalscorer and captain Julie Fleeting is suspended. She has scored 107 goals in 105 internationals and although she will be missed, Sneddon is more than confident the other strikers can step up to the mark.

She said: "Obviously Julie is a huge threat and we will miss her, but our team is full of talented players who are more than capable of putting the ball in the back of the net.

"Recently we lost 3-2 to Russia in the Cyprus Cup, the closest we have ever come to getting a result against them. The Russians are good, but they are far from unbeatable and a top performance will get us the result we are looking for."

Diana Barry and Hayley Cunningham have been drafted in as cover for Fleeting, who returns for the second leg.

Kick off is 3pm.
