IBROX reserve gaffer Tommy Wilson has explained why Rangers are operating a loan policy to farm out their young fringe players in a bid to gain much-needed competitive experience.

At present Gers have 10 youngsters out on loan. Eight are enjoying competitive game time in lower leagues north of the border - Jordan McMillan is at Hamilton Accies and Dean Furman is plying his trade for Bradford in the English League One.

At Parkhead 11 days ago, Andrew Shinnie starred for Dundee in their Homecoming Scottish Cup fourth-round clash against Celtic to highlight what can be achieved with this strategy.

Wilson said: "We feel that as part of our strategy to develop our young players it is important to get them out into a competitive environment where they are up against players who are playing for their livelihoods and against senior opposition.

"Andrew played against Celtic in front of 25,000 fans and Jordan McMillan will experience the same with Hamilton - so how do you measure the value of all of that?

"Dean Furman is at Bradford playing in front of home crowds of 13,000 and these are great things in terms of their development.

"So, loaning out our youngsters was always part of the development strategy."
