AFC Aldermaston manager Terry Rooney felt a draw would have been a fair result on Saturday, as his side lost 2-1 to visiting Cookham Dean in the Thames Valley League Premier Division.

Rooney said: “It was a very entertaining game from two good footballing sides. I was disappointed to lose, but I could not be annoyed with my players and I think a draw would have been a fair result.”

The home side opened the scoring after 26 minutes, as Aldermaston captain Michael Porter ended a nice move with a goal from 10 yards.

The same player was then put through five minutes later and despite being tackled, he still managed to get his shot away, but it went the wrong side of the post.

Then a fine save from the Cookham goalkeeper, denied Porter again this time from a header.

The visitors equalised after 40 minutes, thanks to a well-rehearsed free-kick and they then scored the winner on the hour mark.

Aldermaston are in Thames Valley League Cup this Saturday when they travel to Taplow. An extra incentive to do well in the competition is that the final will be played at the Madejski Stadium.
