A proud Ronald Koeman hailed his Saints team after they stunned Arsenal to earn a famous win in the Capital One Cup.

The club booked a place in the fourth round of the competition with a 2-1 victory, as Dusan Tadic’s penalty and Nathaniel Clyne’s blockbuster sent them into tomorrow's draw.

It was their first ever win at the Emirates Stadium and only their third success in 43 post-war trips to Arsenal.

Koeman, who fielded a strong side against a much-changed Gunners outfit, said: “I’m very proud, because winning away against Arsenal means a lot.

“Everybody spoke about the changes of the Arsenal team. I think they made some changes, but they took it very seriously.

“I think the game was on a very high level, with high tempo, and I enjoyed it.

“I enjoyed tonight, not only for the result finally, but the way we played.

“We tried to press and tried to play attractive, offensive, and that’s not easy, because they have a great team, great players.

“I’m proud about the reaction after 1-0. It was a great free-kick from (Alexis) Sanchez, and we showed the spirit to come back in the game, and we deserved maybe to score the third one in the second half.

“They got one or two good opportunities, but I’m proud of the team in the belief what we showed tonight.”

Koeman has already signalled his intentions with the League Cup and is determined to try his best to earn Saints a rare piece of silverware this season.

“We are not a club that we can tell everybody that we won titles,” he said.

“For that reason every competition is important.

“I believe in the team who show every three days when they play its ambition.

“Ok, I make the decision for example to put Matthew Targett in, because he’s a young player and he shows his qualities and, as a coach, you have to give those young players opportunities, and the best opportunity is to play against Arsenal, because that’s the highest level.

“He did fantastic and that’s a part of the philosophy of the club and part of the philosophy that’s mine.

“We keep continuing like that.”

Koeman also hailed match-winner Nathaniel Clyne and said the defender, whose 30-yard stunner proved decisive, is good enough to play for England.

“I think he’s ready,” he said. “He has a lot of experience, he is playing very well from the beginning of the season.

“He scored a great goal. I think his performance was very good and I think it’s an option for the national coach and I’m very happy to have Clyney in our team, because he brings a lot of experience, he brings a lot of spirit and I like to have, and I like to play with, offensive full-backs and he shows that quality and it’s very important for the team.”
