Hooiveld bids Saints farewell

Jos Hooiveld’s Saints career has effectively come to an end after he was loaned to Norwich for the rest of the season.

The 31-year-old Dutch centre half is out of contract next summer and is well down the pecking order at St Mary’s.

Hooiveld joined Saints on transfer deadline day in August 2011, a £1.8m signing from Celtic.

He went on to form a central defensive partnership with Jose Fonte that helped earn Saints promotion from the Championship to the Premier League in his first season at the club.

Hooiveld was given a chance in the top flight but became quickly more of a bit part player, progressively sliding down the pecking order.

With the club signing two centre halves in the transfer window in Florin Grados and Toby Alderweireld to replace just Dejan Lovren, Hooiveld was not likely to get another first team chance with Maya Yoshida also preferred.

When the opportunity of a loan move to Norwich came up it was decided to be in the best interests of all parties if Hooiveld dropped down to the Championship to stake a claim for a long term future with the Canaries.

During his time at Saints, Hooiveld amassed 74 starts and three sub appearances, scoring nine goals.

Saints are still expected to make some big announcements this evening. Stay with our blog for all the latest goings on at St Mary's

Thanks for being part of the team, and helping us get back into the PL mate. Forgive me for saying I won't miss any more of your own goals though!

Done a good job for us at championship level, bit for a joker about the place too, I expect he will be missed by teammates for his humour rather than his football skills, hopefully we will get Norwich in a cup, he can get another goal for us, as og's are is speciality.

A really nice guy that played quality in the Championship and undoubtedly a massive part of promotion, shame he couldn't quite make it in the Prem.

All the best for the future Jos.

Thanks for all you have done, truly a loyal player who has shown nothing but respect for the club and fans. I wish you all the best for your football career away from Southampton.

Great player in FLC but unfortunately as this summer's departures prove there is no place for sentiment in football any longer, sad to say- Cheers Jos for all the help but it looks like we now have quality in the defensive area that we've lacked previously- think this season could be surprising for some- but not for Saints fans!!!

During our Championship year he was a major influence, mentoring Fonte, scoring the odd goal and really making a difference. I was surprised he didn't quite raise the bar when he got to the premiership but he played his part and will be well remembered and respected.

Good luck Jos.

A loyal team player who did not seem to mind being in and out of the first team - or at least never complained. Pity he did not quite have the skills to play at the top level. Popular despite his occasional costly errors. Good luck at Norwich.

Some people have selective memories. They seem to home in on the odd mistake he made and conveniently forget his considerable contribution in the championship including his goals which helped get us where we are today. He wasn't a complete flop in the premiership either - he was in the side that had some memorable victories over the likes of Chelsea and Man City. I noticed quite a few people lamenting the departure of Gaston but when you compare their contributions to Saints' success in recent years Jos wins hands down.So he goes with my thanks and best wishes- I'm sure he'll do a decent job for Norwich.
