FORMER Saints starlet Calum Chambers has won his first major peice of silverware - less than a fortnight after joining Arsenal.

Chambers was mainly used by Saints as a right back last season, but was deployed at centre half this afternoon as Arsenal inflicted a 3-0 defeat on Premier League champions Manchester City to lift the FA Community Shield at Wembley.

Back at the scene of their FA Cup triumph, the Gunners tore into a lacklustre City side - which saw Willy Caballero start in goal ahead of Joe Hart - and were in control by half-time through well-worked goals from Santi Cazorla and Aaron Ramsey, whose extra-time winner had beaten Hull on May 17 to end a nine-season trophy drought.

Substitute Olivier Giroud cracked home a third goal from 25 yards on the hour as City were subdued, but both rival managers Manuel Pellegrini and Arsene Wenger will know full well much sterner tests lie ahead before they hand out the honours again in nine months' time.

City did not have any Englishmen in their starting XI, but £30million Brazil midfielder Fernando was, while Bacary Sagna watched from the stands against his old club as did former Chelsea midfielder Frank Lampard, signed on loan from New York City FC.

Arsenal fielded summer recruits Alexis Sanchez, Chambers and Mathieu Debuchy, with World Cup winners Mesut Ozil, Per Mertesacker and Lukas Podolski all still absent ahead of next week's Premier League opener against Crystal Palace.

Not again!!

DE stop reporting on ex-players! It's as interesting as were did Beattie buy his groceries last week!!

It is clear you are looking to ignite fractions between Saints fans to create story lines as you have no other to fill your gaps on Southampton FC!

The way Lovern forced his exit was a total disgrace to Southampton FC, to the fans!! To football itself !! He has a big ego, and not because he has gone, personally I feel he wasn't all that! Again personally he created some good clean sheets early on, and people connected his fee to this oh so easily? In the latta part of the season he was found wanting, and in the World Cup from what I saw he was too easily turned inside out.

It is laughable that we brought Lovern for a 7 mil if I remember right, which Liverpool wanted to pay, to then sell him one year older for 20mil. If Koeman can buy a decent CB like the Dutch guy at Celtic, and we should pay over the odds if we can for him, then the laugh would be a lot bigger! This guy also got a lethal dead ball kick!

The point is DE the club is trying to move on, the players have gone for what ever reason and it looks like they have? Lovern will have so much to worry about Pelle than anything else, that I see either Tadic or Davies seeking one in a gap made! It is shameful that you keep tabs on ex players wearing foreign shirts! The only exception if you are in touch with anything DE is Lambert! Truly believed if we went onto a very successful season and ended higher up in the league. The only ex player who would genuinely feel sorry he is not in red and white stripes would be Lambert, and that he would be made up for Saints! It's a disgrace that Liverpool fans are already moaning about him!

I really do think Reed has made a mess of the club s transfer policy. The time to get tough was when players started throwing toys out of prams earlier this summer. A stern lecture could have put a stop to that nonsense, period. But once they started leaving, for whatever reason, no effort was made to replace them, and its bit like bolting the stable door after the horse has bolted. The Chambers deal made no sense whatever, and is final proof that Reed and Krueger really didnt know what they were doing ,inexperienced as they were, why on earth were these two put in charge of such important matters. Neither are qualified, end of.

I didn't know that (Sorry, I must have missed your previous posts). It does help to explain some things.

Given next week's match, I get the 'Lovren scores on his debut' story, although the better angle would surely have been, 'Saints next opponents hit four', with just a brief mention of Lovren scoring. This, though, has been added by the DE for no other reason than to get people like you and I to click on it - as we have done - and thus increase its number of 'HITS'.

But you, I and most others probably open at least 95% of all stories on the DE's Saints page, so it would be better if they simply printed relevant stuff that we could discuss and debate.

Bit of horses and gates unfortunately - however of all the sales this summer, the CC move to Arsenal I find the most disappointing. It was clear to a number of observers for some time he may well make a decent CB. Time will tell I guess and with hindsight the CC sale may look good business in a couple of years – who knows. This sale and other recent evidence suggest to me a willingness to cash in quickly on the academy output when opportunity arises. Notwithstanding the other first team sales (and that it is very easy to spend other peoples money!) this indicates that outright football success in the PL is not the primary consideration with regard to running the club. No great shock I guess from a business perspctive but still a bit disappointing that the best kids do not even make it into their twenties in a saint’s shirt.

I have been saying in several posts that the gate should have been shut with Lovren.

We should have told Chambers he was staying as he was always likely to be an England CB of the future. Selling Chambers really do not make sense and at a price that was far to cheap. He will be worth twice next season.

Considering we are desperate for a top CB we go & sell one of the best young ones.

No wonder Morgan wants to go when he sees this, I am afraid I don't blame him as he is the best of the lot and probably knows it. Why should we stop him when we didn't stop Lovren or Chambers ?

Only three weeks left to the window shuts and at least 5 top players still to sign so Les and the Board need to concentrate on the new signings, but when it is all over I think we need an inquest from the board and their failing to keep any of our best players.

We must start signing BETTER quality players, the ones so far are not as good as the ones who have left.

We are screaming out for a top goal-scoring STRIKER; TWO top CB's and Jordy Classie to replace Morgan who will certainly leave now.

Get on with it Les & Ralph time really is running out.

COYR&WS we can still turn it round, Hernandez, Classie, Gardos & Rojo or Vlaar plus a couple more in urgently.

I sat there watching this match thinking "He cost £30m." or "He's on £100k a week." I couldn't get past the fact I was watching a bunch of millionaires kick a ball around.

This was an appalling piece of " business" by the club.

He is already worth far more than what Wenger paid and looks very comfortable as a centre half. A position we're desperately trying to fill.
This sale more than any of the others was nonsensical and NO Ralph, he didn't go for a " premium price".

Meanwhile, our options up front are pitiful. This is an area where we've always been strong, Certainly the weakest front line in my 40 years of watching us home and away.
