READING had to settle for a 2-2 draw on the opening day of the Championship campaign, after James McArthur scored an equaliser in stoppage time at Wigan.
The Royals had trailed at half-time to a Callum McManaman goal, but scored twice in a six minute spell to lead 2-1 after 77 minutes.
The first-ever league goal for Shaun Cummings with a lovely strike from the edge of the box level things.
Nick Blackman then hit the post, before Sean Morrison headed in after a free-kick, but Wigan never gave-up and McArthur made sure honours were even for two of the promotion favourites.
Reading boss Nigel Adkins said: “We had an excellent second-half and deserved something from the game.”
The Royals are next in action on Tuesday night (kick-off 8pm), when they entertain Newport County in the League Cup.
The Welsh side lost on the opening day of their League Two campaign against Wycombe Wanderers.
