Black Cats close in on deal for Manchester City's Jack Rodwell

JACK RODWELL

JACK RODWELL

Sunderland appeared to one step closer to signing Manchester City’s Jack Rodwell after he was pictured at the club’s training ground today.

The 23-year-old midfielder, linked with a £9m move to Saints, is surplus to requirements at City, where he has failed to make a mark during two injury-blighted seasons.

Rodwell was filmed at Sunderland’s Academy of Light facility, where he was thought to be discussing personal terms on a deal that should go ahead as soon as he passes a medical.

Rodwell was hot property when City signed him from Everton for £12m in August 2012, the result of some impressive all-action displays in the Toffees engine room.

But he found the star-studded City dressing room an altogether tougher challenge and was not helped by fitness struggles at key times.

Having made his England debut against Spain during the peak of his Everton days in 2011, Rodwell largely fell out of the international picture due to his lack of game time at the Etihad - thought he was recalled to play a cameo in the glamour friendly draw against Brazil last summer.

Rodwell has started just seven Barclays Premier League matches during his time at City, scoring his only two goals during a 3-2 home defeat to Norwich.

His other starts have been confined to cup competitions, while he featured twice in the Champions League against German sides Borussia Dortmund and Bayern Munich.

Black Cats boss Gus Poyet's transfer business so far this summer has been of the low-key variety, with Jordi Gomez, Billy Jones and Costel Pantilimon signing on free transfers and Chelsea fringe player Patrick van Aarnholt also arriving.

A £14m move for Liverpool's Fabio Borini, who spent last season in Wearside on loan, has thus far come to nothing but Poyet said over the weekend he was confident of surprising fans with some exciting developments.

A box to box midfielder has been top of his priorities for much of the close season and Rodwell would fit the bill.

Oh that's another we missed out on but at least the money is still in the back! I wonder what sort of interest you get on £90m?
You know what I am beginning to think they have no intentions of buying any other players and the low offers they make are part of the ploy to fail in securing the player.
If this was a business the board would be sacked by now. They can't blame anyone now if they can't bring in players as all the other clubs are coping. In a word shambles!

Getting more worried every day that goes past without us signing anyone, and with every passing day yet more rumours of very average looking loan signings. Bought my ticket for West Brom today but am worried that we may just be loaning a few players in and banking the money and then selling the club. I suppose it makes the most financial sense for Liebherr to keep the transfer money AND stay in the PL on a shoestring budget thus retaining the bulk of the value of the club. SO hope I am wrong but am worrying! Also think some of these CM loan signings we are linked with are to allow Schneiderlin to leave before deadline day.

Now let's concentrate on buying players in the areas we need them (subject to Ralph not knowing something we don't about central midfield).

I'm trying to be patient, but slightly concerned that we can't push through deals for reserve players, Championship clubs and Scottish clubs, quickly.

Assuming we are in for Leroy Fer, my concerns will get higher if he ends up at QPR in the coming days.

Maybe, rather than there being a conspiracy or a lack of effort on our part to get him, he just actually wants to live in the north of England - weird concept, I know, but assuming us and Sunderland both matched his terms, which I'm sure we did, he just preferred staying nearer to home. Some people want to move around, others don't.

See, it's possible to see anything through a positive or negative perspective - I'm still staying as positive as possible, and expecting to hear great news this week!

It is a business and the board are doing well making profits for the owner. What it isn't is an ambitious football club responding to it's customers needs.

I am trying to stay positive too but am finding it hard to stay positive. I remember Cortese doing an interview once with the BBC explaining why Saints never utilised the loan system becuase it would be to the detriment of our youth players. Problem is now the 1st team has been stripped of some top quality and we (probably) don't want to spend much money, we are having to take that route. Bertrand for example. If we feel he is a good LB then we should just buy him, I can never call someone 'Saint Ryan' when they aren't actually a Saints player.

It was never going to happen!,we have not got the money for transfers.
Day in day out we hear who might be coming, there's three signings this week, but reality is that its a smokescreen by the board ,RK is going to have to be content with loans(and these will be hard to achieve), the current team (who are like last seasons Sunderlands cup team I.e.reserves,and youngsters good as they are but not ready for the premiership yet.
Its a recipe for relegation, a massive let down for the fans loyal to a great club!.

What is the truth, Last week we were told that three signings were soon to be confirmed. To date we have got Bertrand on loan, we then hear that Taider is coming on loan. What we have is renters, no one on our team for the the long haul. The next we hear is that the odds on our being relegated has gone from 40/1 to 4/1. If you see a horses odds dropping like this you must take notice, you have to assume that certain people in the know realize what's going on. Why did Herr Krueger take his summer hols during this vital time in our season to leave Les Reed in charge. Never mind we can rest assured that Katharina is taking care of our Saints. Anybody ever seen "Flog It", you know When they say "It was passed down from my Father but it has no sentimental memories for me"....Less than two weeks to go until the new season...poor Ronald what have you landed in...another Rupert Lowe pile of ****.

I think it must have crossed Katharina Liebherr's mind to sell the club but in the end she has raised more money by selling players than she would have if she tried to sell the club.

Since the signings of Dusan Tadic and Graziano Pelle there really has been nothing to get excited about. I don't expect us to go down this season but I don't expect a lot either. I just hope the board don't think to themselves "let's see how we get on against Liverpool before we buy another player"

Tadic may well be better than Lallana and Pelle might well be better than Lambert.

So your'e answer is to pay over the odds for players just because we have the money.
I remember when Peter Taylor was in charge at Leicester the fans were demanding he bought a £6 million forward, he paid that for a big black guy who turned out to be worth about no where near that amount, I think it was Akinbye.
Is that what you want us to do , pay a set amount on players even if they are not worth it ?
Look at the money we have wasted the last couple of years on players .
I would rather we took our time and bought players who want to play and not players who are only after big wages.
I think we should keep clear of the Man U rejects.
How many players leave United for so called smaller clubs and actually turn out to be bad buys ?

Can you all not see? There are not going to be any more signings. The only reason we are getting loan players is that that is the cheap option. In 2 weeks time we will take the field with what we have got now. The transfer money is staying firmly in KL ,s handbag. I can only see a season of struggle with a few thrashings thrown in for good measure, if the club is not sold before hand.

Couple of things ... last year's Sunderland cup team included Rickie Lambert, who missed a sitter to level the tie, Llallana, back in the day when we all still loved him, Shaw, who is the most expensive defender in British history, Steve Davis, an international captain, Wanyama, recently our most expensive signing, Clyne, who most of us thought should have been England's tight back for the last couple of years, Ward-Prowse, touted as the new Scholes and one of our big hopes for this season, and had Schneiderlin, Cork, Rodruigez and Chambers on the bench ...

It wasn't the team at fault, it was the fact that, I think, Pochotino didn't get the players up for it as he wanted to go to Spurs even then, and didn't want to leave behind a team in Europe through the FA Cup, as that would have made it impossible for everyone to use European football as the big excuse for leaving. I watched that game, and couldn't believe we weren't up for it at the time, but now I have my thoughts.

I even start to wonder if Lambert didn't miss that sitter - Fcuk me backwards, my Granny could have scored that - on purpose, or on instruction.

Second point, I have every faith that they will buy players, and I give them the benefit of the doubt.

Third, loans where we have a fixed option to buy are a great idea; we can see what they are like first, and buy if they are worth it.

Some people want to move around, others don't.

See, it's possible to see anything through a positive or negative perspective - I'm still staying as positive as possible, and expecting to hear great news this week!
it could also be the case that we were never in for him anyway and it was just another rumour!
the press seem to be linking us with lots of midfielders lately, they are desperate for us to sell spider so that they can continue with their `club in crisis` rubbish. just because they link us with a player doesn't mean with were ever interested.
the signings Ronnie was on about over the weekend are the ones involved in the swap deal with Osvaldo and we are still waiting for him to sort his end out, had his medical today I believe so should be sorted out tomorrow!

Were we ever after him? The papers just guess most of the time, they see a player that needs to leave and a club with money looking to sign players and they guess. How many players are we linked with? How many reports were there we were getting Bertrand? In my opinion a defensive midfielder is the only position that doesn't need strengthening. We are so desperate to see a signing we seem to just want anyone with a price tag. Let's hope this week sees a CB, GK and Attacker coming in.

Well Ralph: where are the 2-3 signings we were going to make by the weekend (i.e.last weekend)?

What became of the second marquee friendly you promised us when the Leverkusen match was announced?

Why is Morgan Schneiderlin 2/17 (i.e. 17 to 2 ODDS ON) to sign for Spurs before the end of the transfer window, when you stated clearly last week that he is not for sale?

Ralph? Ralph??

I know we're cutting it fine, but it was less than a week ago Ralph went on record to say we weren't selling Scheiderlin or JRod, we were looking at new players coming in (no specific names mentioned - I certainly didn't see Rodwell) and to be patient and draw a conclusion come 1 Sep. As far as I can see nothing has changed there.

Why not put what little faith in those promises instead of turning to total despair. It's easier I'll admit. Less people take the p1ss when you're wrong about predicting doom. I'm as concerned as anyone else about the club, but 2-3 new signings in a couple of days could change the mood completely. It's either that or see if Ralph will do us all a daily conference call so that we don't feel like we're not being kept in the loop..

Can you all not see? There are not going to be any more signings. The only reason we are getting loan players is that that is the cheap option. I don't feel it's negative to point out that we need at least 1 QUALITY signing each in defense and attack. And fast. We already don't have time for the new team to gel, and are facing a baptism by fire at the start of the season. Maybe there is a lot going on behind the scenes but I feel that if this would have been accomplished already, a lot more peoples minds would be at ease.

They got it right with the last 5 to leave didn't they benali76
Claiming they got all five right is kind of misleading. Getting the Lambert transfer right after his wife tweets about it doesn't mean anything. Predicting Shaw to go to Chelsea doesn't count as getting it right either.

They are all rumours not facts - no-one from Saints said they were getting Rodwell. Let's wait and see what happens this week - my bet is we WILL get some new signings. We're not exactly going down the pan financially like Portsmouth did. We have a great manager and still have good players. Tadic may well be better than Lallana and Pelle might well be better than Lambert.
What a mess!

Are we OK in CM or are we ?
The reason we are chasing players in this position is because Morgan is being sold and the board have now realised (too late!) that selling another top player is a mistake until they have a replacement in.
Rodwell is good but not good enough. Jordy Claise is the best replacement for Morgan but Saints can't either afford or attract him.

A top quality Striker and TWO top quality Centrebacks are the essential positions if we are to avoid a relegation battle, followed by a top Gk, all required in next ten days ! However this is looking more unlikely now as Saints are unable to attract them.

Top quality players now see that Saints have changed from being an exciting club to join into one to avoid joining. Only foreign players looking for a step up to bigger clubs will come now, plus loan players who want game time to be in the shop window. Our young players like JWP must now be thinking of their futures and push for a big move next summer.

We have to accept that we are now set up as feeder club to the bigger clubs.

Never in my 50 + years of coming to watch Saints have I seen such a wasted opportunity to build on such a quality young side.
Not sure I would not prefer watching us winning most games in the Championship than accepting this fate.

I hope I am wrong but the so-called bus seems to have rolled over.

I will wait to see what the team is against Liverpool to give the board time to get 4 top quality players in before I launch into them if they fail to do so.

NC Fan4Life you have summed up my feelings and worries exactly and I have been around the Saints since 1959, as I have said before.

Regardless of who and what, has it not come to a pretty pass when players choose teams like Sunderland and QPR before us.

We have created our own image problem by selling before signings. Let's hope that a good start gets some momentum going and then this might help to get some more in the January window, at least. Oh, dear!

Sunderland are welcome to him. For a very short while he was the next great thing. He's been injured more than he's been fit and that is is unlikely to change, from someone who coached him for is sprinting. He runs the wrong way and it is putting undue pressure oh his joints - he is unlikely to be playing much longer according to this coash. Why would he have been a good risk for us given this?
