Cardiff boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer insists he is determined to hold onto rumoured Saints target David Marshall

Basingstoke Gazette: David Marshall David Marshall

Cardiff boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer insists he is determined to hold onto rumoured Saints target David Marshall.

Saints were linked over the weekend with an £8m swoop for the Scottish international stopper, while there is also reported interest from the likes of Arsenal, Tottenham and Celtic.

Ronald Koeman has made a new keeper one of his summer transfer priorities, but Solskjaer is optimistic it won’t come at Cardiff’s expense.

“David was excellent for us last season, the best goalkeeper in the Premier League,” said Solskjaer.

“I am hoping to convince him to stick with us. It’s up to me really to sell the idea of what we are going to be trying to do here next season and beyond that.

“Sell my philosophy to him if you like. I know he likes it at the club and is settled in the area, so we are hopeful he will be with us next season.”

It will be hard to hold on the Marshall once the Saints come in and push for it. The Saints has been the "victim' of being harassed by other teams to sell their best players, so Cardiff will feel the pressure too. On top of that, their Msian owner does not seemed to be as committed as Katherine to the Saints. It is a matter of time that he will go. His head will turn on potential to challenge for CL spots next season and higher salary.

I posted on here last week that we have to show a bit of patience and give Ron time to assess what is required, 7-10 days from starting in the role.

We're in that period now and I have a few questions.

Has the Tadic/Pelle deals stalled as I thought they were nailed on ?

Les said there would be 2 top marque friendlies Bayer Leverkeusen is one, who is the other?

I'm not anti - anyone, but it does now start to feel that we are dragging our heels a bit.

I believe there is a press conference on Friday and hope we get good news.

Personally I would like to see us go and get jack but land (second time lucky).... I believe in sfc continuing to give young English players an opportunity. I think he would learn an awful lot from 'The Monk'.

I'm also excited and curious to see which youngsters will seize the opportunity to break into our first team this season! Having our academy means that even when the transfer window closes - we still have a nice flow of fresh talent coming into the team.

As for other signings - I hope that RK proves to be our most influential talent acquirer yet!! Mopo was 50/50 when it came to player signings - Lovren & BetVictor were decent but there is no hiding from the catastrophe that was osvaldo (predictive text calls him 'sob also').

Exciting to be an sfc supporter!!! Who knows what the season will offer..... I can't wait - bring on the season!

He looks a very good keeper if last season is anything to go by. I really like Boruc and he made some great saves last season keeping us in many games but, his distribution was woeful and those howlers were pretty awful. I imagine Marshall would want to be playing in the Premiership. Cardiff face a battle to keep hold of him in my opinion. Especially when Uncle Les and Ronald get the cheque book out. As for those saying why haven't we signed anyone yet. Unfortunately multi million pound deals take time. I'm sure we'll announce Tadic in the next few days and many more signings before the window closes. Keep the faith!

Just asking, but why do people keep saying that we sell players quicker than we are buying them?

If rumour is to be believed, Lallana, Shaw and Lovren have been after a move since they first heard Pochettino was leaving, (April) yet Shaw and Lallana only left a couple of weeks ago and Lovren, more than 2 months later, hasn't yet gone.

Koeman has only, officially been in the job for about 9 days, yet our first signing could be announced today.

Perspective needed.

Tadic is supposedly having his medical thus morning, having left for Southampton last night. It is believed that he'll be revealed today.

Pelle is taking a while longer, but I believe that's down to them playing hard ball with us on the price. (We started bidding at €6m and they wanted €10m).

Things are likely to start moving along now, with several deals being completed in the coming weeks. It's nice to see that we're being linked with several pretty good players, but don't forget that RonKo also needed time to assess the current squad, including those who've returned from loans. (Sharp, Mayuka, Isgrove, Stephens).
He is yet to meet some of them, too, such as Schneiderlin, Lovren & Dani.

There have definitely been talks after Swindon contacted us about taking him back. I believe it will happen, but RonKo needed the chance to assess what he had to hand first.

Personally, I think it will be a good move as it virtually guarantees him first team football which will aid his development and benefit us in the long run.

I now live about 25 miles from Swindon and have a few mates there who are supporters - they said last season Jack was a different class to everyone else in their league.

Thought I read somewhere that Stephens had signed another loan for the season at Swindon ?
Tadic will sign today......pelle transfer taking longer as hes away on holiday in salento italy!!.....just access his twitter feed and you,ll see hes due back thursday;-)
I'd also heard that Saints concentrated all their efforts on securing Tadic, because Everton were sniffing around, hence not completing the Pelle deal.

You build a team starting at the back, Marshall was the best I saw in the PL last season. I think we shouldn't hang about as there's no way he's staying in the Championship with Cardiff. Perhaps we could offer Gazanniga in the deal ?

Played for Feyenord first half, got two of four goals before being taken off.

As a Saints fan living in Cardiff, I can tell you that the locals didn't even rate Marshall until last season. He reminds me of Paul Jones, looks good on MOTD highlights but when you see him in the flesh he is actually missing 2 of the 3 key components to be a top modern-day keeper. Yes he's a good shot-stopper (as was Jones) but he doesn't command his area and his kicking is average at best. Let's face it, Cardiff were dreadful last year so it's not surprising he looked good, he had enough practice. I would much rather see Fraser Forster, I agree we need competition for Boruc but IMO Marshall or Ruddy would struggle to displace him. I don't want us to spend £8 million on a reserve when there are priorities elsewhere, if we buy a keeper they need to be the undisputed number 1 and better than we already have. Loving the Tadic signing though, hopefully more to come - COYR.

Agree, Forster would be my first choice, Ruddy second. We have to bear in mind that our new GK coach has worked extensively with these two and will no doubt be grilled about them by Rambo. It would be interesting to see Ruddy performing behind a defence which didn't crucify him every time the opposition got the ball.

Maybe Rambo will see Cody Cropper as ready to step up?
We really do need someone in to pressure and if necessary replace Borat, I think he's great but he ain't going to go on forever.
