Lallana and Shaw will both start in England's World Cup finale

Basingstoke Gazette: Luke Shaw Luke Shaw

Adam Lallana and Luke Shaw will make history tomorrow night after Roy Hodgson confirmed the Saints duo will both start against Costa Rica.

They will become the first Saints teammates ever to start for England at the same time at a World Cup.

England have already been eliminated from the tournament after defeats to Italy and Uruguay and round off their time in Brazil with a game against Costa Rica.

Hodgson has taken the unusual step of naming his team a day before the match.

Lallana has appeared as a second half sub in both of England’s games but has not had a World Cup start while for 18-year-old Shaw it will be his first game time of the tournament having been understudy to Leighton Baines.

England team: Ben Foster, Phil Jones, Gary Cahill, Chris Smalling, Luke Shaw, James Milner, Frank Lampard, Jack Wilshere, Ross Barkley, Adam Lallana, Daniel Sturridge.

I do hope that Rickie gets a bit more than the last few minutes this time.

Also, if Luke and Adam are still there then, surely, 3 Saints in the team would be a record.

OK, I know it will only be 2, but does a Saints' legend count, still making it 3!!!!

Who cares who plays. It's a meaningless game. Poor old Woy would like to win in order to restore some faith in his managership. Unfortunately Woy you and the squad you selected have already let the country down. Your tactics, team selection and ability to change a game are clearly nowhere near the necessary standard.Your leadership has been woeful and you should do the honourable thing and step down. If you stay the Euros will also become a non event for England supporters. Bring on the Premiership and some proper football.

The squad was ok but the starting eleven and substitutions were woeful. I predicted two losses but think we will win tomorrow. Roy bottled it at the start of the tournament for some reason.

I'm glad these players are given an opportunity. It should set England up in better shape for the Euro's.

Anyway, I must say I am loving this world cup. Also looking forward to the new season to see big Ron Koeman work his Dutch magic with our young players.

The national press do know about our players. They've printed plenty of drivel about them moving to different clubs since the end of the season. And not forgetting Luke's sexting with a Playboy twin front page story.

The Rise of The Foot Soldier. says...

CULL THE OLD LIONS ROY - PREPARE FOR EUROS.

The Pressure is OFF and Roy is starting to get back and develop his Creative Thinking.

His PARALYSIS has gone - as he starts to see more clearly.

SHAW AND LALA - and perhaps 45 minutes for Lambert playing with Rooney like the Warm up game when both tried to bundle the ball over the line - ONLY GIVE Lambert more space to flourish.

THE TOURNAMENT IS OVER FOR ENGLAND - SO PLAY WITH A FLORISH AND WIN FOR THE FANS.

I care these are Saints players playing in a World cup for England. For the first time they have the chance to show on a world stage how good they are. This is not a friendly against a side "uninterested" Costa Rica have been a sensation in the competition and will be wanting to show that they are worthy qualifiers for the next round and this means for Luke and Adam they are worthy opponents for them to demonstrate that they are part of England's future. A proud moment for Southampton football club and any fan of the club who "doesn't care" cannot really be a fan at all

If he brings Lambert on late or takes Lallana off when Lambert comes on I promise I am not going to watch another England game while Hodgson is still in charge.
