This live event has finished

Summary

  • England lose 2-1 to Uruguay and could be eliminated from the tournament tomorrow night
  • Luis Suarez scores twice
  • Wayne Rooney equalised for England
  • Adam Lallana and Rickie Lambert appeared as second half subs

9:58pm

After that massive disappointment we will wrap up the live coverage but there will be a match report and full reaction shortly on dailyecho.co.uk

And, of course, the comments and reaction will no doubt continue to flow and are always very welcome.

Also check in later to see how Maya Yoshida gets on as he plays for Japan against Greece. We will have a report immediately after the game on dailyecho.co.uk

There will be more in depth coverage of the England game in tomorrow's Daily Echo as well

9:53pm

England have lost.

The firts time in World Cup history they have lost both of their first two games.

They can still qualify but it is a bit of a long shot now.

Two Luis Suarez goals won the day.

Roy Hodgson's team selections will come into question.

Most Saints fans will be asking even if Lallana didn't start why he wasn't brought on earlier

9:51pm

URUGUAY 2 ENGLAND 1

9:51pm

It comes to nothing and we are moments away from the final whistle and an England defeat

9:50pm

This is it. One corner deep into stoppage time. It's now or never

9:50pm

England hearts broken right now...

Basingstoke Gazette:

9:49pm

England are running out of time here

9:46pm

There will be five minutes of stoppage time

9:46pm

This might just be the moment that England's fate in this World Cup was all but sealed...

Basingstoke Gazette:

9:45pm

Final changes for both sides so Luke Shaw and Gaston Ramirez won't get on tonight

9:42pm

Rickie Lambert gets all of four minutes to make an impact as he replaces Henderson

9:40pm

URUGUAY 2 ENGLAND 1 (SUAREZ - 85 MINS)

What a horrible goal to concede.

A long punt down the field from the keeper, Gerrard gets caught under it and flicks it behind him.

Suarez is alive to it and breaks in behind and produces a fantastic finish across goal

9:37pm

Rooney levels things for England...

Basingstoke Gazette:

9:35pm

Uruguay have made a second change but still no Gaston Ramirez.

It looks unlikely he will make his first appearance of the tournament tonight with two changes having been made

9:34pm

CHANCE (78 MINS)

Sturridge again with a decent turn and shot but the keeper gets down to save

9:31pm

URUGUAY 1 ENGLAND 1 (ROONEY - 75 MINS)

Sturridge does well and feeds in Johnson who produces a lovely low ball across the face of goal from the right and it's a simple finish from Rooney after a good run.

That's a first World Cup finals goal for Rooney and it's a massive one for England.

Now can they seize the chance to go on and win this game

9:30pm

CHANCE (74 MINS)

Good work from Daniel Sturridge who makes room for a shot from 20 yards out but he doesn't catch it cleanly and it's easy for the keeper

9:27pm

Finally on 71 mintues it's time for Adam Lallana who replaces Welbeck.

Forgot Welbeck was even on the pitch such has been his impact on the game

9:25pm

This is the moment that separates the two teams...

Basingstoke Gazette:

9:23pm

Gerrard goes in the book for a late challenge on Rodriguez

9:23pm

England are enjoying a much better spell now.

They have got back on top but haven't been creating too many chances

9:22pm

No Adam Lallana as Roy Hodgson opts to bring on Ross Barkley for Sterling on 64 minutes

9:15pm

Steven Gerrard tries to rally England. They need a bit of rallying right now...

Basingstoke Gazette:

9:10pm

CHANCE (53 MINS)

Fierce Rooney drive is straight down the middle and the keeper saves

9:08pm

CHANCE (52 MINS)

England have been simply awful sicne the break and now Cavani goes across goal and wide.

Uruguay should be further ahead. The fact they are not is the only positive you can find

9:06pm

England are really rocking at the start of this second half.

They are still only one down thanks to good fortune really

9:06pm

Former Saints player Jason Euell is echoing what a lot of people are probably thinking right now...

9:05pm

CHANCE (49 MINS)

Same Suarez attempt direct from a corner. Hart again makes the save

9:02pm

8:52pm Thu 19 Jun 14

montecristosaint says

poor poor england no inventiveness giving the ball away get welbeck and baines off Lallana and Shaw on

9:01pm

The second half is underway

8:48pm

There surely has to be an argument for Lallana and Lambert in this game

8:48pm

This picture pretty much sums it up...

Basingstoke Gazette:

8:47pm

A top quality goal from Uruguay means England trail at half time.

Though defeat doesn't see them knocked out, they cannot really afford to lose this one.

It's going to be a big second half

8:46pm

URUGUAY 1 ENGLAND 0

8:41pm

CHANCE (41 MINS)

England almost do respond quickly but Sturridge's shot is saved at the near post

8:38pm

URUGUAY 1 ENGLAND 0 (SUAREZ- 39 MINS)

England get a bit of bad luck in midfield and Uruguay work the ball on the left to Cavani who chips the ball across goal.

Suarez ghosts in behind Jagielka and cushions a header back across goal and into the far conrer.

Poor defending, great finish and England need to respond quickly just as they did against Italy

8:32pm

CHANCE (31 MINS)

Gerrard curls in a lovely right wing cross, Rooney manages to get a head to it at the far post but hits the bar.

He is only a yard from goal but can't get above it to head it downwards

8:31pm

Leighton Baines in action as the Everton man continues to keep Luke Shaw out of the side...

Basingstoke Gazette:

8:29pm

Godin has done very well to avoid being sent off.

He blocks off Sturridge's run with his arm and must have feared a second yellow card but the referee just gives a free kick

8:27pm

CHANCE (27 MINS)

Low cut back corner from Suarez finds Cavani but he fires over the bar

8:25pm

8:23pm Thu 19 Jun 14

jls217 says

Yeah he's done it again.

Gone are the days when Saints used to provide England with their captains, can't seem to get a player on the field at all.

8:16pm Thu 19 Jun 14

de Heiligen paard 101 says

roys bottled it again! I thought he had gone away from picking the `big` team players!

8:17pm

You would have to say it's a fairly even game early on, slightly edged by England.

And you'd also have to add that there is no reason whatsoever that England cannot beat this Uruguay side

8:16pm

CHANCE (15 MINS)

The ball breaks across the area to Rodriguez who has time to set himself and fires first time across goal. It's a great hit but is just over the bar.

A real warning shot for England

8:12pm

So much of the build-up has been focussed on Wayne Rooney but he has certainly played in typical fashion early on tonight

Basingstoke Gazette:

8:11pm

Roy does look like the pressure is on tonight

Basingstoke Gazette:

8:10pm

CHANCE (10 MINS)

Rooney bends the free kick up and over the wall but it's just wide

8:09pm

Booking for Godin for a blatant handball 20 yards out just to the left of centre.

A great position for a right footer

8:05pm

CHANCE (5 MINS)

Suarez tries to score direct from an inswinging corner but Joe Hart gets across to push it wide at the near post

8:00pm

The match is underway

7:57pm

The national anthems are playing.

Hope you are standing up in front of your computer

Woy going with the same team. Look to see changes early if this does not work. Our players are there to be part of a team and will play their part. As a Saints fan, I wish Luke and Adam were starting.

7:49pm

We are ten minutes from kick off.

Let's hope for some Saints involvement this evening

7:42pm

Our good friend Simon Peach has just put out the customary team sheet photo.

Interestingly Rickie Lambert still plays for Saints according to FIFA.

7:38pm

You might not recognise any of these chaps now but they might be quite famous by tomorrow morning.

Its is match referee Carlos Velasco Carballo (centre) with his assistants as they warm up before the Group D match the Estadio do Sao Paul.

Basingstoke Gazette:

7:34pm

7:34pm

Opta have come up with a couple of interesting stats...

7:29pm

In other Saints player related news it's a big night also for Japan and Maya Yoshida.

Columbia beat Ivory Coast in Group C earlier this evening.

A win for Japan over Greece would see them draw level on points with Ivory Coast.

The game kicks off at 11pm and we will have a full report on how Yoshida got on at dailyecho.co.uk as soon as the finla whistle blows, just as we did for Dejan Lovren and Croatia last night.

7:25pm

7:24pm

It is a huge game tonight.

Steven Gerrard has warned his England team-mates they are likely to be in for a long and miserable summer if they do not beat Uruguay.

Gerrard, along with vice-captain Frank Lampard and manager Roy Hodgson, addressed the squad at their hotel 24 hours after the 2-1 defeat to Italy and the message from the skipper was clear.

Gerrard told the 22 attentive faces in the audience that they, for the most part, played well in Manaus, but he also reminded them that they are now on the brink of World Cup elimination.

If England lose against Uruguay, only a highly unlikely set of circumstances will allow them to progress, while a draw would leave the Three Lions needing a favour from Italy in the final group game.

"It was important for them to realise what is at stake and how important this game is," the England captain said.

"We have got a must-win scenario.

"It wasn't a message to scare any of the lads but a wake-up call to everyone in the room - the staff and the players."

Basingstoke Gazette: SPOT ON: Gerrard

7:21pm

TEAMS

Uruguay: Muslera, Gimenez, Godin, Caceres, Pereira, Lodeiro, Gonzalez, Arevalo Rios, Rodriguez, Cavani, Suarez.

Subs: Munoz, Fucile, Gargano, Hernandez, Forlan, Stuani, Perez, Ramirez, Coates, Maxi Pereira, Silva.

England: Hart, Baines, Cahill, Jagielka, Johnson, Gerrard, Henderson, Sterling, Rooney, Welbeck, Sturridge.

Subs: Foster, Wilshere, Lampard, Smalling, Jones, Milner, Lambert, Lallana,
Barkley, Shaw, Forster.

Ref: Carlos Velasco Carballo (Spain)

7:18pm

7:12pm

In rather less savoury news the Press Association have just filed this report...

England fans were targeted by Brazilian hooligans who threw some kind of explosive device ahead of the match against Uruguay in Sao Paulo, according to Brazilian media.

Globo has reported that 15 people were arrested after a hooded group attacked England supporters at two neighbouring bars in downtown Sao Paulo, close to the official Fan Fest.

One report said a number of England fans were taken to hospital for treatment, but Globo quoted one bar owner as saying no customer had been injured.

One eye-witness said: "The guys jumped on a bus to try to escape, and then the police went after them."

After the attack police seized six rockets, a knuckle-duster, a dagger and other fireworks.

7:12pm

Roy Hodgson named an unchanged side for England's crunch Group D clash in Sao Paulo, where opponents Uruguay were able to call on Luis Suarez for the first time at this World Cup.

Despite the opening day defeat to Italy, the Three Lions boss chose the same team that impressed in Manaus, albeit with Wayne Rooney reportedly set to play as number 10 with Danny Welbeck moving to the left flank and Raheem Sterling wide right.

The big news for Uruguay was that Suarez was able to start at Arena Corinthians after undergoing knee surgery last month, replacing Diego Forlan in one of five changes made by Oscar Tabarez to the side defeated by Costa Rica.

7:11pm

Team news is that Adam Lallana and Luke Shaw are again on the bench, along with Rickie Lambert.

Gaston Ramirez is amongst the subs for Uruguay but Luis Suarez starts for the South Americans.

7:10pm

Hello and welcome to the Daily Echo’s live coverage of England’s game against Uruguay in Group D of the World Cup in Sao Paulo.

After defeat in their first game against Italy, Roy Hodgson’s men badly need to get a win under their belts this evening.

Much of the build-up has been focussed on whether Luis Suarez will be fit to start for Uruguay.

Saints fans will also be hoping Adam Lallana might land a more prominent role after a strong ten minutes as a sub against Italy.

when are people going to wake up to the fact that Rooney has never and will never cut it in an England shirt?
I'm bored of hearing about how he is going to suddenly 'come alive' he's had two world cups and a european championship to do that and he hasn't done it.

And if that's supposed to be 'attacking football' as per Roys comments today then frankly......
