Southampton FC close to appointing Ronald Koeman as new manager

Basingstoke Gazette: Ronald Koeman Ronald Koeman

Saints hope to seal the appointment of Ronald Koeman as their new manager early this week.

As revealed on the Daily Echo website over the weekend, the club submitted a formal contract offer to the 51-year-old on Friday night, having identified him as their preferred candidate to succeed Mauricio Pochettino.

Lawyers and advisers acting for Koeman spent the weekend going through the deal, and it is hoped an agreement will be reached shortly.

The Dutch legend returned from a holiday in Turkey on Sunday and began the process of putting his backroom team together.

Assuming he is appointed, Koeman is expected to hire his brother, Erwin, as his assistant, and the two are understood to have spoken further about the role in person yesterday.

Jan Kluitenberg, who was physical coach under the European Cup winner at Feyenoord, is also likely to come on board, but his former assistants Jean-Paul van Gastel and Giovanni van Bronckhorst are set to remain with the Dutch outfit.

Koeman first held talks with Saints two weeks ago, with the club impressed by what the former Netherlands captain had to say.

The ex-Barcelona player was also happy with the vision set out to him by the board.

Koeman was known for encouraging an attacking style of play at Feyenoord, with the club's fortunes improving dramatically during his three-year spell in charge.

He also brought through a number of young players at the Rotterdam outfit.

Saints have been wanting to appoint a manager with an attractive and attacking philosophy, while also being willing to promote talent from the academy, and they believe Koeman ticks those boxes.

During his managerial career, Koeman has managed a number of heavyweight clubs, enjoying great success with both Ajax and PSV Eindhoven.

Spells outside of Holland, with Benfica and Valencia, were far less triumphant, although he did reach the Champions League quarter-finals with the former and won the Copa del Rey with the latter.

His brother, Erwin, 52, has also previously coached Feyenoord, while he spent two years in charge of the Hungarian national team.

He most recently managed RKC Waalwijk, but left the club this summer.

This would be a good signing, it might just settle everyone down, players, supporters, but most of all the media. Getting a little worried here in oz, with what's around the corner.

Sounds a good CV. Can only be a positive move for the club. Hopefully as and when confirmed he can pursuade some of our want away players we have as much ambition as the clubs currently seeking them. Would hope Lallana would be offered the captaincy as an incentive seeing he did so well in that role last season.

So... after a week when the press made it seem like we had sold everyone except the tea lady, we may be about to sign up a manager. I think he's a really good choice.

I salute the hard core posters on these threads, you know who you are. You were, by and large calm and saw through most of the invented hype. I'm sure there will be more though and the flappers and panic merchants will all be as interesting as Phil Neville. Poor bu**er, he was so boring, the speaking clock would have been better..

In the absence of Gordon Watson, the DE have found Jim Steele again to offer comment on something or other. Must be MLTs turn soon.

I look forward to seeing the manager appointment confirmed, and THEN we will see what is going to happen player wise.

Have a good week y'all.

Lallana has some explaining to do before we can even consider him fit for the captaincy of this fantastic club again.

Everything else is tickety boo and waiting for the back room boys to perform their magic in peace and tranquility without the doubters on here kicking them around verbally at every turn.

If we get the Koemans we should be able to be considered a settled club once more and start planning for the next 5year plan. They are not, as yet signed, so let's not get too carried away as the kickers will start again if the board has to go to a plan B and start looking again. It's not a done deal till the club announce it. I am holding my breath and hoping.
There is a MF by the auspicious name of Clasie who may be convinced to come here if RK signs up for the dream. Saints fans would like this bloke.

There is another type unfortunately.
This sort is akin to Genital warts and herpes and other anti-social diseases of the willy.

They only seem to surface when someone is getting fecked over.

Unfortunately they also keep re-appearing. Unlike genital warts and herpes they can best be dealt with by ignoring them. Irritating sad little people who clearly have no mates (and the reason for that is amply demonstrated here) To be pitied more than anything. They only have the voices in their heads as company.

Me too, and the same should apply to all of us. Koeman's record isn't that amazing. Even so, it doesn't mean he's the wrong choice just as appointing a manager with a fantastic record wouldn't necessarily make him the right choice.

The jury was out on WGS when he arrived but he won most of us round.

What appointing Koeman would signal is the Board's intent. And THAT right now is vital. Furthermore, despite some reservations, he's far preferable to some of those being mentioned.

Anyway, unless a time came when it became impossible, I for one will support whoever is appointed.

Jordy Clasie midfielder, Feyenoord

I would love to see any one of those at St. Mary's next season. But I am a greedy B@stard and I would have the lot of 'em.

Anybody with the words 'defender' after their name work for me.

I know everyone likes a good striker, but have been feeling for the last two seasons that we need to get rock solid at the back first.

I'm confident we can score every game (once we replace Rickie clearly), so if we can keep more clean sheets it is happy days.

Vorm would be nice as well, or Al Habsi.

I'd have all that lot too. If they're quality, and Les Reed OK's them, and the money is there, he can bring who he likes. But I can't see Feyenoord being a Saints feeder club, can you? ;-)

I like the choice of Koeman but as Strasbourg Saint and Saint Phil have said, the jury is out. That's normal for any new man. I think it's his methods and approach more than his achievements that are a good fit for St Marys.

If it all comes together and he signs up for us then I wish him all the luck in the world.

I would love to see any one of those at St. Mary's next season. But I am a greedy B@stard and I would have the lot of 'em.

We seem to know a lot more about RK than we did about MoPo.
Let's wish him well and let him get on with it!
Never a dull moment at St.Mary's........
Here's to stability with all hands on deck.

Personally I think he's the best option from the bookie's list of realistic options. Liked the idea of Yakin and Moyes, but Koeman's record at Feynoord is impressive and the players can't help but respect him from his playing days, not to mention he's pretty tough. The fact he has brought so many young players through means we won't be reinventing the wheel either.

Much happier with him than I would have been with any options from English clubs (the Poyets, Sherwoods Bruce etc) or the fancy big budget brigade of Mancini, Benitez etc, who in my opinion would be clueless on a budget. Plus we've avoided the weird appointments of Gross, Magath or similar.

Like it. Particularly as he could bring some good Dutch or non-Dutch players with him.

As I've said, while I'm not happy for the likes of Spurs to nick our players if we don't want or need to sell, if Feynoord want or need to sell and the price is right, fair enough.

There is a few on here who are skates I think.
There ARE a few on here that have no football connections whatsoever and only post to be annoying, presumably it gives them some kind of perverted thrill, the best thing for us and the worst thing for them, is to simply ignore them or report any abuse, eventually they will vanish, one way or another.

And funnily enough they disappear for months when they get proven to be wrong as they almost invariably do. Remember last season when the pathetic Skunt losers were predicting our relegation and their immediate return to the dizzy height of league 1. This tw@t from the lane appears to have a similar intelligence level to them so there is a very good chance he resides on Port sea island

Koeman has a win ratio of 55.84% compared to Pochinetto's 34% in his career.
The original stumbling block has been removed which was the transfer kitty and KL has agreed to give Koeman waht he wants. Which was revealed in several papers before the Echo even had a sniff.
he has a proven track record something Poch never had. Let us hope he can keep that win ratio going.
Well when England come back after being knocked out in the group stages we can start to sort out and settle down the team. Keeping as many as possible on board and buying in what we need to strengthen.
How much they enthuse they are not I would think you would of realized Lee of the lane and the liverpool posters are fishy folk down the road. Ignore them and they will fade away

If Koeman does become our new manager, and I really hope that he does, please remember everyone that if he is successful he will no doubt get head hunted next year or the year after in the same way that MoPo and some of our players have been. Unfortunately that`s our reality. We love the club but managers and players alike see us as a stepping stone to bigger and better things. So if he does do well we must just make sure that we enjoy it while we can because as we`ve found over the last few weeks football change`s very quickly, and not always for the better from our perspective.

That's why the next few weeks are so vital - sell Luke, make the others stay. Only by showing a change in intent will we ever get out of the 'accepting we are a feeder club' cycle. We don't have to accept it because we are now, according to the board, not in need of money and were intelligent to take a long view on player contracts.

If we can show we lose MP, but are determined to not only consolidate on last season but maybe even aim higher, we can break the silence.

As we stand, without the player sales people seem to accept are a fact of life, we could be sitting at the start of next season with a very capable, high-profile manager and the vast majority of our team from last season, bar a left back we can replace with a fully matured, defensively sound left back and several other good players.

Take our team from last season, lose Luke, add two quality defenders, a keeper and two attacking players (central striker and pacey wide attacker) and things will be looking good. Of course if we manage to sell Osvaldo I think you can say three attacking players, although I'd like to see Sam in with a chance and maybe Isgrove as well, or Chambers further forward.

So we have plenty of options. COYRs.

I think he has the potential to be an excellant signing for us. And I agree with what has been said above: that he is enough of a 'name' for us to get the benefit (as a club and fanbase) of "a statement of intent by the board".
Where some people have legitimate concerns is that between his time at Ajax and Feyenoord he had several short term jobs. Whether he is a jumper or someone that is sacked it raises some fears. Of course, ironically, we can get the beneft that he has jumped from Feyenoord!

The agents of Ronald and Erwin Koeman have confirmed the Dutch brothers are set to form Southampton's new managerial team.

The former Netherlands international will become head coach and his older brother Erwin will be his assistant.

The duo boast extensive managerial experience, with Ronald having managed the likes of Ajax, Benfica, PSV Eindhoven, Valencia and most recently Feyenoord.

Like his brother, Erwin has spent plenty of time in the dugout with Feyenoord, Utrecht, the Hungarian national side and RKC Waalwijk - who he left this summer.

Ronald’s representative Guido Albers told Voetbal International: “He wants to make a next step in his career at an ambitious club with possibilities. Southampton fits in that profile.

Saints are already being linked with a number of players with Dutch links, with Feyenoord duo Lex Immers and Graziano Pelle and Celtic defender Virgil van Dijk said to be high on the Koemans' wanted list.

This is good. Be aware though that the player links are probably just as lazy as the ones that link every Saints player to the Spuds or the ones that put Christian Gross on the bookie's short list. Expect no self respecting Dutchman (or indeed anyone he's ever worked with) to avoid being linked to the Saints in the next fortnight.

Let the Dutch revolution commence! If we get this tied up this week we will have plenty of time to replace the want aways before they are back from the wc, I can only hope that they are left to rot in the reserves if their supposed big clubs can't afford to pay what they are worth! Rumour albeit rumour has it that the war chest offered to mopo was 50 million and this has now been doubled to 100 million by KT herself in support of the new man (and his less impressive brother). I know 100 million doesn't go far these days but with the correct scouting we could easily reach a forth plus spot in the next 3 years- buy quality young potentialials and not so called seasoned pros with millions in the bank already and nothing left to prove on the pitch! The bus is full of fuel, she's passed her MOT, new tyres and she's even going to get a brand new red and white stripe paint job, were all on board just waiting for the driver............. Sign him up! Coyr!

Tuesday morning in Oz as I read this and other news from UK. The big Four seem to be cooling towards the reasonable fees placed on our name players and RK is presented as certain to maintain Saints style.
If we lose Lallana and Shaw there will be cash in kitty for Van Dijk and Pelle.
Osvaldo and Lambert are gone, and, objectively will not be missed. Ricky was slowing noticeably in the latter half of the season, most of his goals came from set play. I look forward to Ward-Prowse taking over his role and perhaps moving into a more attacking role, together with Clyne. Also more Academy stars like Gallagher and Co. give me a great deal of excitement to look forward to in the coming season..

Finished 2nd, 3rd and 2nd over the last 3 years at Feyenoord - competing with Ajax & PSV. Won the dutch league twice with Ajax 2001/2 & 2003/4 plus the dutch cup. Another cup - Portugese Super Cup in 2005, Dutch league with PSV 2006/7. Copa Del Rey (Spanish F.A Cup) with Valencia 2007/8, Johan Cruyff Shield winner 2002 & 2009 with AZ Alkamaar. As a player won everything except the World Cup. Managed by Cruyff at Barcelona, promotes youth & total football (at Feyenoord he started with a bunch of kids and helped oust Graham Taylor in 2004 - do I not like orange)..
I AM DELIGHTED - ITSA GONNA BE ALRIGH EH!. Do not doubt, this is the man for the job

Coyr!
These are the rumours I love. Let's have more rumours like this... and I love the idea of Katharina Liebherr swishing into the boardroom, like a latter-day Dagny Taggart, with a brief case laden with £100,000,000. "Take this Hank Koeman. We've got to keep Taggart Transcontinental running... I love you, you big biffer of a Dutchman!"
Get a Life lOAD what planet are you on, SHE IS DUTCH HE IS DUTCH, can you idiots see whats going on here, to the demise of My beloved SAINTS, MARK MY WORDS???
