Saints striker Jay Rodriguez "really proud" of ex-Saints teammate Rickie Lambert

Basingstoke Gazette: Jay Rodriguez, left, and Rickie Lambert Jay Rodriguez, left, and Rickie Lambert

Saints striker Jay Rodriguez is “really proud” of Rickie Lambert after his move to boyhood heroes Liverpool – and can’t wait to watch him play at the World Cup.

Lambert signed for his hometown club in a £4m deal after a hugely successful five years at St Mary’s in which he scored 117 goals in 235 games, completing a rags to riches rise from factory worker to England international.

Rodriguez and Lambert forged a great relationship with each-other on the pitch, scoring 17 and 14 goals respectively last term.

But while he’ll be sorely missed at Saints, Rodriguez is immensely happy for the 32-year-old.

“I’m really proud of him,” he said.

“He’s a great guy off the field but on the field he’s just helped me so much. “It’s been great playing with him, so I’m very proud of him.

“I learnt the most off Rickie. It’s a shame to see him go.”

Lambert is currently with Roy Hodgson’s England team at the World Cup in Brazil alongside Adam Lallana and Luke Shaw, who have both been linked with moves.

The 24-year-old, whose World Cup hopes faded with a ruptured cruciate ligament in early April, will be watching his friends from the sofa.

“I’m rooting behind all of them,” he said.

“They’re representing England and I’m sure they’ll do really well.

“I’m just looking forward to seeing them out there playing.

When asked how far he thinks England will go in the World Cup, he said: “There are no limits for them. “It’s hard to put a prediction on it but you look at the squad and the managerial staff there, they can go as far as they want.

“They’ve (Lallana, Lambert and Shaw) have done really well and they each deserve their place.

“Fingers crossed, I’ll get to see them play lots out there.”

Since Jay arrived at Saints I always thought he didn't look happy to be here. He always seems too serious and miserable in his interviews.
I now think that's how he is in front of a camera and he's very happy to be at the club, the way he says that managers and players come and go and life goes on is quite encouraging.
I could be wrong and he could just be taking advantage of the expert medical facilities at Saints before saying he wants out, I certainly hope not.

As for Koeman, Skysports say their sources say he's on his way. I do hope so.

Official announcement on Monday re the new Manager. Insider info but wouldnt say who it was bur that "fans will be delighted and excited". Fair to say Koeman is odds on then.

I notice Ben Smith from the BBC has not made mention of this good news Saints story. In fact the football pages on the BBC website making no mention of the new Saints Manager announcement.

Ings would be a great signing, but I hope Koeman will bring in the Feyenoord striker, Graziano Pelle as well.
He 29 but has scored 50 goals in 59 games over the last two seasons. He's 6ft4 and certainly can play.
Jay, Ings, Gallagher and Pelle (pronounced Pella) would be a decent strikeforce.

I will waitfor Monday then, after all it is Sky and The Mirror not our club. Not being negative, would be pleased with Koeman. DO WE LIKE ORANGE??.

would INGS want to come to us?, would stand a better chance of staying in the Premiership.

I may yet be proved wrong on this - who knows what the future brings. I think JRod could develop into a bit of a cult figure here. He does give the impression of being a bit of dour northerner but his attitude toward the team as a whole and what he needs to do when the whistle goes cannot be faulted.

He's measuring up as being an absolute star signing - hope to hear him one day say he's like to finish his career at Saints (providing I live that long).

Perhaps not all the youngsters need to be looked at through negative eyes after all - time will tell.

In the meantime Jay thanks for what you bring to this great team we are building.

Anything in football is possible. Doubt any club would take a gamble until he has shown there will be no re-occurrence of his current injury. Lambert will have two years tops left in him unless he drops back to MF where I reckon he could go on for another couple from there. If Lambert were five years younger I guess it might figure in JRod's reasons for staying/leaving but I doubt it figures currently. Not saying it WON'T happen though.

J-rod took a bit of stick early on at saints but he has turned into one of our best players, we really missed him after that horror injury. he took time to adjust to playing in a wider position and I think his confidence took a beating at first.
I spoke to him after him came at a signing at the sms superstore, along with Gazza. Gazza was upbeat and quite chatty whilst J-rod did seem a bit dour, I think that's just the way he is though.
I don't know if anyone else saw the interview he did about his recovery on saints you-tube channel, but the club presented him with a book of get well messages from fans taken off their facebook and twitter pages, he seemed genuinely surprised at how well thought of he is by the fans.
not surprised he is `proud` of Rickie and the others as they all seem to get on really well. I remember Rickie saying that he would be just as happy if J-rod was picked for the world cup instead of him.

looks like the wums have been going mad with the thumbs down on the early posts of this thread, sammycowshed is making the most of his last couple of days on here then, well until he comes back on Tuesday with a new and exciting login name!
