Lovren's final chance to shine for country ahead of massive World Cup opener

Dejan Lovren

Dejan Lovren

First published in Football

SAINTS star Dejan Lovren has one last chance tomorrow to impress ahead of an ultra tough World Cup opener.

The centre half, linked with a move to Liverpool, will be hoping for a start in Croatia’s final warm-up friendly against Australia.

He will be desperate to do well to put himself in with a chance of facing hosts Brazil in the tournament opener next Thursday.

Lovren was an unused sub when Croatia defeated Mali 2-1 in a friendly last weekend.

Prior to that, he played the first 57 minutes of a 2-2 friendly draw with Switzerland in early March, starting against ex-Tottenham man Vedran Korluka.

But Gordon Schildenfeld was preferred alongside Corluka against Mali.

Lovren was a regular for his country throughout the 2014 World Cup qualifying campaign.

But he was dropped from the starting XI after the 2-0 loss in Scotland last October.

Under new boss Niko Kovac, Lovren didn’t play at all in the first leg of the play-off in Iceland the following month and only came on in the last minute of the second leg for Luca Modric.

Lovren’s chances of playing in the World Cup, though, were boosted when centre half Josip Simunic was banned from the tournament.

FIFA hit him with a 10-match ban for leading a pro-Nazi chant with supporters after his team had beaten Iceland.Simunic will also banned from entering any stadiums for his nation’s matches and was fined around £20,000.

Lovren and Schildenfeld have been tipped to start against a Brazil side who will field Neymar and Fred up front.

Barcelona star Neymar, just 22, has fired 30 goals in only 47 appearances for his country.

Good luck to him and good luck to all our Saints, including Rickie!

You and many other Saints fans are fair and sporting = overcoming the disappointment of (potentially) losing so many top players.
I only wish that Saints fans (and many other fans) were treated the same way. We are treated like peasants in the field sometimes.

we cannot lose our best players nobody can take them off us they are under contract, the Press can go and f....k themselves.
As Hodgson says, the risk if you do sell is that you cant replace them we need to appoint Koeman and get a couple of forwards and a center half in not sell anyone. Then his the ground running next season and take on these so called big clubs and hammer them.

Go on Dejan show them the qualities you have been showing us all season. Dejan truly is one of the best CB's we have ever had and our defence with him is so much stronger than without him.
I hope he and all our players (including Rickie) have great world cups and are able to show the world what we at Southampton already know!
Roy could do himself a favour, listen to the fans, and drop shrek and play Rickie instead.

I know is off subject but Tim Sherwood's odds have dropped to be our manager from 33/1 to 6/1 while Ronald Koeman odds have gone from 1/2 to 4/6….
Now I would like Tim as I know he will be long long term with no premadonna's like @ tottenham while Koeman will probably be a 2 season coach before he himself will move as his history shows.
But I would't be too worried if either coached/ managed, as long as its done soon

Why are the d.e continuing to add petrol to the fire by always quoting players they are talking about as being linked to other teams. In this instance
Dejan being linked to Liverpool. Are you changing your name to Liverpool Echo or Manchester Post. Please keep it positive, saints supports have suffered enough over the years. Dejan will do well in this world cup just as he has in the heart of our defense.

How sad it is that I am half hoping all of our players absolutely flop in the world cup for fear of yet another one being preyed upon. Especially in the light that if we could keep this squad together with another 3/4 faces for next season we would be close to fulfilling our potential. If every time we get a dozen useful lads together they are going to be sold on - then what is the point?

Should be delighted for Lovren and the others involved be able to cheer them on no matter what country they play for but just know the moment they shine they could be taken seduced by the figures thrown at them by richer clubs who will possibly not even play them.

Why not have said as you did in your Echo 10 days or so ago Lovren says he is happy to stay at Saints. Why the negative rather than the positive comment.
I notice Liverpool have bought a midfield player for 9 million. It is though nice to have a few days break from the deluge of negative comment in the media.
Real madrid seem to be looking to close in on Suarez for 70 million and Suarez would not be averse to a move there.
Yet we need a manager to come in quikly and I mean a manager like Koeman or Moyes and not a muppet.

There was a comment somewhere that AL's move to Diverpool was becoming doubtful. That would be good and confirms Rodgers's view that he would not be held to ransom!

Joke, man! How can you to be held to ransom if you make an unwanted bid to a club whose player is under contract and that club says your bid is not enough?

Just sheer arrogance by a club who thinks that somehow they are superior!

And I hope that their interest in Lovren goes exactly the same way. Push off!!

1. The DAILY TELEGRAPH cited that DM would be an ideal Appointment for the SAINTS and would be GOOD for both Parties.

Comment : He did well for Everton - and that is the next stepping stone for this Club to get to CL.

2. QUALITY ORGANISATIONS produce a VISION STATEMENT and a distilled version for employers. I hope the BOARD and the Organisation are working on the VISION and this can be communicated by the Chairman to the Fans..

3. Saw a long post on another thread about SFC making use of the Summer to push forward on the Commercial side of house. Ralph Krueger has been brought in to develop this side and reading between the lines - he has made a slow start and NOT hit the Ground Running. Perhaps he needs a COMMERCIAL MANAGER to assist him.

WISH LOVREN WELL - LONG MAY HE PLAY FOR THE SAINTS.

talking of diverpool and `tapping up` found this little tip bit on goal.com;

"Liverpool are ready to wait until after the World Cup to seal a £25 million deal for Adam Lallana and want the Southampton captain to force through a move to Anfield, Goal understands.
While Liverpool will not improve their take-it-or-leave-it bid, they have assured Lallana privately that he remains their top target for the summer and they are prepared to wait until after the World Cup to land their man."

so diverpools `demand` that the deal is done BEFORE the world cup or its off has gone out of the window, and they have told Lalla privately that he is still their top target. how the f**k can they tell him privately? surley that tapping up. if this is true then RK should report diverpool to the FA. this is getting beyond silly. Its about time clubs like diverpool were stopped from doing this, they didn't like it last year was arsenil were chasing Suarez! Come on Ralph make a stand, tell diverpool the F off and tell Lalla he isn't going anywhere unless we want him to.

Agreed. It seems to be getting more blatant too. I would half expect a club to have feelers out etc. I am more interested in finding out what Adam's part has been in all this.
If Skiverpool had been met with any sort of negative or hounourable response from our "Captain" perhaps along the lines of, "Sorry gents I am contracted to my current club, either contact the club or wait until the end of my contract."
All would be ticketyboo.
Now I may not be Sherlock Holmes but there's a slight possibility there's been a little untoward flirting and encouragement coming from a certain corner.
There are, "Rumours" that others in the Saints squad or possibly their representatives may have had covert interactions with other representatives also. I'm sure out players are innocent and it has all been an over exaggeration and/or misunderstanding.
Excuse me gents I feel like retching.

Have to laugh at the irony of the 'report them to the FA' comment. Though true, it seems to me that the FA's top coach (Roy that is) is practically endorsing approaches for our players. He'll even give them a bit of time off to push the deals through.
