Gastón Ramírez's hopes of playing a key role for Uruguay in the World Cup are raised after he starts in warm-up win against Slovenia

Gastón Ramírez

Gastón Ramírez

First published in Football

Gastón Ramírez started for Uruguay in last night’s 2-0 win against Slovenia, as the Saints playmaker continued to warm up for the World Cup.

Ramírez played the first 45 minutes in Montevideo, before being substituted.

He also started in last Friday’s 1-0 victory against Northern Ireland.

Uruguay’s goals last night came courtesy of Edinson Cavani and Ramírez’s replacement, Christian Stuani.

Uruguay, who are grouped with England in Brazil, begin their World Cup campaign against Costa Rica next Saturday.

I kind of hope so - will be supporting Gaston, Lovren and Maya all the way - hope they all do great. They seem to be respecting the club a bit more than others.

As for the others, as much as I'd like to say I'm delighted for them, it sticks in the throat a bit. Rickie, yeah, I think I'll manage it because he's a top guy and it is a wonderful story. It will still be with a touch of sadness though.

Not sure I'll be as happy for the other two.

It's a massive shame because Adam has been very loyal to us over the years, I just don't like the way he's posturing around at the moment. At the very least he should come out with a statement showing he actually gives a cr@p for the fans and the club.

In fact, a statement from both of them saying they will be going into the World Cup feeling like Saints players would be nice, and that they'll decide their futures on their return. And make it a tiny bit convincing?

The least they can do is allow us to enjoy the tournament and feel a bit of pride and happiness for them.

I agree with the other comments, I to will be surporting any saints player at the WC, Gaston has shown us such great moments, my only fear with him is that as soon as his country qualified for the finals he stopped playing for us. I hope he is not another Delgardo? we will need him to play every game next season if Adam go's unless of course he go's to? anything could happen these days

Should Adam decide to go, I'd love to see Gaston take his chance with us and really shine . I feel the same with Osvaldo, give them a chance to make names for themselves, for the right reasons. I think we've already got the quality players, we just need more strength in depth.

Yes, it would be funny if England left their group with Nul Points. Seriously, I am so disappointed with Lallana. I thought he was Saints through and through. It shows a certain weakness that he can be swayed like this and it is downright disrespectful I am also very surprised that Hodgson has said what he has.

Hope the rumours linking Gaston with want away statements are just that. We may need to rely heavily on him next season. If he can keep away from injuries he will prove to be a real asset to Saints. Hope the only time he doesn't shine is against England and comes back in the mood for a tough season.

Seedhouse I usually read what you have to say with great interest because it is usually thoughtful and interesting however are you really suggesting that by the start of next season Saints will not have appointed a manager?
No, of course you're not you're too intelligent.
A couple of days ago an announcement was made that an appointment will be made in about ten days so maybe we can expect a bum on the seat by the end of next week and ready to steer the ship by the following week - we can only hope.

I still think Gaston is a top quality player, he just hasn't had a real run of games us. He and Lalla play in the same position and with Lalla being in such great form over the last year or 2 its been hard for Gaston to break into the team. Ive always said that if we want to progress as a club we will need to have subs of his quality, and so I don't think he has been a waste of money. I hope he, like all the rest of the our players (Inc. Rickie), have great world cups as they are representing our club on the biggest stage in football.

Someone on this forum made a comment that apparently Gaston was made a false promise when he signed for us (not sure what his evidence for that is) if that is so we could almost forgive Gaston for being upset with Saints and having a grievance. On the surface at least, he just seems to have got his head down and done what was asked of him (injuries allowing).
Of course we never get to hear or see the whole story but on the basis of what little I know, I like this fella until he gives me reason to think otherwise. Not that that will affect his wages in any way at all of course.

How can you possibly think in football today that any player for any club can only be dedicated to that club? That's not the world of football anymore, anywhere. Professional player or park player.
