Lambert on target for England

Saints ace Luke Shaw in action for England

Saints ace Luke Shaw in action for England

Ex-Saint Rickie Lambert was on target as England drew their World Cup warm-up against Ecuador in Miami tonight.

In the humid Floridian climate, Enner Valencia headed Ecuador in front after some sloppy defending by Chris Smalling and Saints ace Luke Shaw.

Basingstoke Gazette:

Wayne Rooney equalised (above) and Lambert brilliantly put England ahead, but Roy Hodgson had to settle for a 2-2 draw thanks to Michael Arroyo's long-range strike.

A fiery match spilled over towards the end when Raheem Sterling was dismissed for a wild challenge on Antonio Valencia, who was also given a straight red for grabbing Sterling by the throat in response.

Jack Wilshere also struck out at the Manchester United midfielder and was lucky not to be dismissed.

Despite the dismissal of Sterling, there were some positives to take from the match.

Ross Barkley, making his first England start, performed superbly in the number 10 role - most notably in setting up Lambert's goal.

Rooney also had an influence on the game despite being shunted out wide and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain showed flashes of brilliance - though the latter worryingly went off injured in the second half.

And 10 days before England play Italy in their World Cup opener, it is clear that Hodgson still has much work to do as his much-changed XI struggled to cope with Ecuador's pacey attack.

The experiment of playing James Milner at right-back backfired massively while Smalling and Phil Jones suggested they are not reliable options at centre-back if Gary Cahill and Phil Jagielka get injured in Brazil.

Ben Foster also had a poor game in goal.

The England boss will be keen for his team to put on a more convincing performance in the same conditions here against Honduras on Saturday.

Best of luck to the lad. Class act. Have to say though it didn't feel good to hear the ITV commentator say 'Rickie Lambert of Liverpool'.

Great strike by Lambert.

Why do the youngsters want to dribble past several players when there's an easier pass to move forward.

Did anyone else start scowling at the TV when Lallana came on.

The behaviour of Lallana and to an extent Shaw has made me lose a bit of excitement about the World Cup.

Its sad how some people are reacting now that Rickie isn't a Saint anymore. If it wasn't for him.we probably wouldn't be where we are now. He is living the dream still and he has scored again for my country. And an exvellent strike too. Thats good enough for me.

Excellent strike Rickie. I'd start with you up top instead of that clown Rooney. Doubt that will happen though. Certainly felt strange hearing the commentator say Ricke Lambert of Liverpool. I was really looking forward to this World Cup with 3 of our lads in the team. It's lost quite a lot of appeal now given the events of the past week.

The fact that neither of then have come out and said it's not true says it all really.

At least Shaw has not been in the headlines "demanding" a move. Which, to me says, he's got a little bit more respect for Saints and the supporters than Lallana has.

Amazing goal by Rickie. So unlucky with his cheeky flick for the first goal and if Rooney hadn't been in his way I'm certain he would have got it.

Sterling should never have gone for that challenge. The referee reacted to Valencia's reaction. A booking for both would have been fine, Wheelchair as well, although he spent more time on the deck than Captain Hook I don't think he should even be there.

Really worried about the defence. Milner is not a good RB substitute and Smalling & Jones are far from the partnership that Cahill & Jageilka are. I'd be scratching my head if I was Big Woy. Shaw & Stones are the only defensive back ups I would take, & I would still pick Stones over Johnson.

Midfield is sorted. Henderson, Sterling, Barkley, Lallana, Gerrard & Ox (if fit) would be my go to guys. Lampard was awful last night. Milner is a workhorse but he just isn't good enough or fast enough to be a winger. I can't understand how he is still at Man City!

Forwards we're actually spoiled for choice but Woy keeps making the wrong ones. Lambert needs to start & if Woy wants Rooney to start he needs to get it into his head that he is a Striker, he's been sitting too deep recently. I'm not convinced by Wellbeck at all or Sturridge. Which poses the question - now what? Rodriguez being injured is a blow, he should have gone for sure. I would have also picked Defoe. He's a proven goalscorer and he is quicker than everyone on the team except Sterling & Barkley.

GK - Hart, Forster, Ruddy. Job done. Foster wasn't good enough last night. Hope Woy gives Forster a full game against Honduras.

Rant over!

The Ecuadorian media are correct, Lambert is registered with the PL the FA and FIFA as a Southampton player. Check the Premier League website. Player registration does not change until July 1st.

Perhaps the Echo (if they have five minutes could check (and I don’t mean Wikipedia that is incorrectly stating that he plays for Liverpool (I mean how could he be playing for Liverpool when Liverpool aren’t even playing, It’s like saying someone draws a pension in the UK when they are currently only 64)))

as "apm1954" has said we can certainly take more pride than Liverpool fans with regard to Ricke as he has never played for them. Things could even transpire that he never does.

For instance if he where to get a career ending injury whilst scoring the winner in the WC final. He would technically be a Liverpool player but never play for them.

Personally I hope we sign him back for 1m after the WC. So I am hoping he doesn’t get injured.
