End of an era at St Mary's as striker Rickie Lambert completes his transfer from Southampton to Liverpool

Rickie Lambert has completed his move from Saints to Liverpool.

The 32-year-old striker was this morning confirmed as a Reds player, signing a two-year contract with his boyhood club.

The deal is worth as much as £5m, plus add-ons, for Saints, although Lambert's former club, Bristol Rovers, have a 20 per cent sell-on clause.

Lambert, who has thanked Saints fans in an open letter, said: "I can't believe it. I've loved this club all my life. I left here 17 years ago - and I haven't stopped loving it since.

"I have always dreamt of playing for Liverpool, but I did kind of think the chance of playing for them had gone. I didn't think the chance would come.

"I know how big Liverpool are - and it means everything to me - but I know what is important; I know it's what I do on the pitch and the minutes I play. I know that's what matters, and that's what I'll be focused on."

Liverpool, who released Lambert as a schoolboy, moved for the player last Thursday.

Last season's runners-up in the Premier League said a deal for him would have to be done before the World Cup, or not at all, with Saints feeling it could do more harm than good to deny the forward his dream transfer.

The deal marks the end of an era at St Mary's, with Lambert having established himself as one of the club's most influential players of recent times.

He joined Saints from Bristol Rovers in 2009, helping the club rise up from the depths of League One to the top half of the Premier League.

He made 235 appearances during his five years at St Mary's, scoring 117 goals.

The story of Rickie Lambert develops again and what a story it is. Despite being gutted that Lambert has left, I wish him the best of luck at Liverpool hopefully he will be able to play enough games to stay within the England set up as well.
From his first goal against Northampton to his final goal against Man U, he has scored some fantastic and vital goals for Saints.
Thank you Rickie and enjoy Liverpool, but tell them to stay away from Adam and Dejan, would be a final favour to Saints.

The sort of sad little sorry, loser in life who if he was freezing would go round every one elses fire and **** on it to make sure they were as miserable as you.

Rickie, you really are a true role model. I wish there were more footballers out there like you. It's amazing how many critics of yours I have faced over the years from 'big club' mentality 'fans' whose knowledge of the game is somewhat limited. Every time people have said you'd struggle at the next level up you've proved them wrong and I felt proud to say you'd do just that.

I genuinely believe you'd have been mentioned amongst some of other Premiership's greatest had you had the chances earlier in life, and the fact you've done it the hard way makes me respect you even more. I know you won't care about that and you're now living your dream. All the best Rickie, hope you have a little bit of your amazing career left to go.

Like most people, I don't begrudge him the move either but I think that there is more to this than meets the eye. Why did they have to sign him BEFORE the World Cup? He was shown the door into the wilderness by Liverpool when he was 15. Now they desperately want him back at 32 as a striker when they have the most effective front line in the Premiership? A cynic might conclude that he has been bought specifically to help Gerrard and his Liverpool team mates persuade Lallana and Shaw to jump ship while out in Brazil...

First post I have made on the Saints pages although a regular reader over the last few years. Reason for posting today: To thank Rickie for all his effort commitment and goals whilst playing for Southampton Football Club. He is a true gentleman; I can vouch for that from someone who has met him picking up his kids from school. What you see and hear is 100% genuine. No airs or graces or anything else normally associated with people with large salaries and even bigger egos.

To use a Rickie "saying" I am "made up" for him as he achieves his dream of going full circle and playing for his childhood heroes side. I am sure the only thing that could surpass that is scoring a winning penalty for England; and knowing how the past year or so has been for him he could even go and do that!!

Liverpool fans are a family closely bonded by the present and the past. We have all witnessed that through Hillsborough and the still on going aftermath. They are a big club and now having success again. We are a smaller club and now enjoying success again. And whilst we can let "one of their own" old-boys go home I like so many others hope that we can hold onto our other prize assets particularly Lallana and Shaw for at least one more season. Hopefully we can then improve on where we finished this year and get at least Europa League football.

As far as the board is concerned I hope that they are telling the truth. I have heardnothing to suggest otherwise. As transparent as we want them to be there are some things that have to be done behind closed doors. I believe the statement they made this morning. For them to lie would just alienate certain sections of the fan-base even further. They need to be trusted.

Good luck Rickie as you move home to Kirkby after the World Cup. You will forever be a Southampton legend and be remembered for helping bring us back from the brink and being the best bargain buy £1m footballer any club has ever had.

I cannot quite understand the mentality of a post like this. Sorry foot soldier but you have something in your heart Rickie has never possessed...HATE.... in big capital letters. Pleased that most true fans don't feel like you and will give him a warm welcome next season when he returns to the south coast as a Liverpool player. And if he scores home or away against us I am sure celebrations will be almost non existent.

If it wasn't for RL we would not be where we are at present.

I'm not sure but with the history of the shirt (Le Tiss and Lambert) it's going to be tough to find someone suitable.

I'd like to see the tradition of it going to a humble, potentially legendary Englishman, but I can't think of anyone on the market who fits that description at the moment.

If AL stays would he switch shirt number?

Thank you Rickie for instilling belief in all of us.

Back in the league one days I used to listen to the saints on the radio ( as I live in Canada). Most of the time I was doing this while studying in the Uni's library. I always knew you had blasted in a pen when I could hear the fans cheers well before the commentators had a chance to comment on what had happened; my celebrations almost got me kicked out several times!

I will never forgot your goal against Scotland - so proud to be a Saint, and to be apart of your magical journey. The look on your face as you landed was that of pure bliss - a mans dream come true.

I wish you nothing but the best at Liverpool as you continue your fairytale.

Make us proud this summer and hammer in some screamers!

MLT the best play we have ever seen and SRL a gent and a legend. Who else would be fit o wear that shirt?

I have been really upset over the last few days, RL has been an absolute gent and an honour to have him in a Saints shirt. We had him at his best though and are now feeling the pain that Bristol Rovers fans felt when he left them. Before an away match in Bristol we were in a chip shop and the Rovers fans were talking and telling us to make sure we look after him. Shows how much of an impact he had. Now as he sees out the last couple of year at top flight we won't have to see him lose his place to younger, quicker players until he no longer makes the bench. A bit like putting your Granny in a great care home in her ome town, selling her house and letting her live out her final days happy and content.

Really liked out talisman RICKIE and gutted the Board let him go.

Not so keen on liverpoool lambert who will be smashing in penalties - provided he is on the pitch and not the bench for LFC.

The positives is that he is already slow - can't keep up with play - and can't last a full game like he did for us in League One. Loss of form means he will struggle to get goals in open play this Season.

GOOD bit of business by Ralph Freddy Krueger - I think we all agree and a handsome sum of money.

I appreciate that you are a true Southampton fan, but sadly your attitude stinks, try being a sportsman for once in your life, you are treading a lonely furrow with the fascist style of approach, we are Saints, not dictators, our reputation has always been shown to be a Club whose supporters appreciate the better things of the beautiful game, we have never tolerated thugs or racists, whether within or outside of the Club. I applaud people who are seriously loyal, but I draw the line at those that over step the mark.

I see the papers when showing the team about to board the plane for the USA had Ricky as a Liverpool play when if fact he did not sign for them until today, not Sunday. Just show's the agenda the press have against our beloved team. I hope the board makes them suck bitter lemons when we sell no other player but buy a new striker, and cover for the rest of the team.

You think it's time to take me on OSPRAY because I have the courage to post what other people think and feel - but dare not post.

We have had about 4 threads thanking RICKIE - this thread is about him signing for Liverpool and I for one do not wish him well in a LFC Shirt.

As you know I was looking forward to travelling to Brazil to support 3 Lions - recent events have made lots of decent fans sick in the stomach with events.

Seed has posted Ralph is a Kunt - and can you blame him.

The vision of progress with getting in players and keeping existing players to progress after all the work in the last 5 years is in jeopardy due to a sentimental provincial board.

We both know RICKIE could have done a job for us this Season and now the side are going to struggle even more for goals. A vital piece of the jigsaw has gone and we may not be able to recover to gain the Cup or European position that could have been ours.

You post under 2 names - nitpick spelling - criticise Caps Lock when you are the only one with a name in CAPS LOCK and over the past years are generally an unpopular poster.

Let's have a full discussion with varying views on subjects rather than everyone posting what you want to hear.

Over the time - you have tried to dominate on this Forum - but all I see are the witterings of an old man - who is loyal - but not that passionate about the SAINTS - do us all a favour and give it a rest.

IMO you are a jobbing actor trying to jam your sandalled foot in the acting industry door by way of this website. It's easy when Nigel left and now RICKIE to have an outpouring of emotion. We've done that - everyone has said well done.

The fact is that Nigel was clueless and struggled at times in this League - however he did a fantastic job getting the double promotion. Similarly RICKIE has been awesome.

Selling an ENGLAND Player who is so accomplished and well rounded in all aspects of the game with assists - holding up the ball - in the air - penalties etc was BAD BUSINESS for 5 million.

What is the point of blindly applauding every decision the board makes - when deep down - the gut feeling is that they have let RICKIE go and this may have seriously weakened the team.

My views on the new manager are on hold because I haven't a clue who it is going to be, as sure as eggs are eggs he will be panned on here before he has even stepped through the door. I thought the decision to sack Adkins was the correct one, as was proved.

As I have already posted; lets say worst case we lose MoPo, Adam, Luke and Rickie. We are still a big proposition for a top quality manager to come in. The transfers out bring in 70 million which wipes out our debts and still allows us to invest say 25+ million in the squad next year, making us a viable Premiership club for years to come.

Ok, so we don't kick on next year but we consolidate. It's naïve to think we'll be a top four club while we have a 32k stadium - we can't compete with the new FIFA fair play directives as our wages to turnover ratio will be too high.

These players were always destined to leave this Summer, even if NC was still here.

They will replace them all with low cost players and bin the profit, why do you really think your manager and a player like Lambert have already left ?

No no no!

I don't buy this whole act of yours "Osprey". This ghastly old man who bullies and stalks other posters is not really you, it's a character you play. IMO you are a jobbing actor trying to jam your sandalled foot in the acting industry door by way of this website. You have merely painted this picture of a shadowy figure slumped in front of his flickering computer screen all day, sporting a dirty beard which Rupunzel would struggle to scale, all the while grunting and scowling at the posts you read.

Yes you have delighted us with the shenanigans of this vindictive curmudgeon you play, but it's quite obviously an act!!!

Tell us what we might have seen you in on the telly?
On the telly I was in a TV programme called 'Madabout' with Matthew Kelly, but that was back in the eighties, my 15 minutes of fame, but that's another story. In case you hadn't noticed I am on a Crusade to annoy as many neggies as I can, to try to bring them back to the reality of supporting the Saints, I win some I lose some, but I try to play fair, and abuse is not allowed.

I see the people who `say it as it is` and `can read between the lines` are now attacking fellow saints fans again. the reason? well its simply because the board have again said that they have turned down bids for players that they told us were `already gone` in `done deals`. now their `expert` knowledge has been proven wrong again their only option is to turn on those fans who disagree with them. fine if that's what makes you happy go for it, personally I think it says more about your character than those you are attacking. the old `you use more than one login` is getting tired now, just because more than one person disagrees with you it doesn't mean its the same person.
one of our so called `fans` has today posted twice and both of those posts were attacks on other fans, why would you think that's a way to behave on a forum where different views are shared? why wouldn't this `fan` feel the need to thank rickie for what he has done for the club? as they say it takes all sorts.
all I can say is keep the insults and abuse coming, I cant speak for ospers, but its water off a ducks back to me.
time will tell with the club and its intentions and if that's not good enough for you then tough, theres nothing any of us can do about it. if all your negative views, sorry realistic as you call it, come true then the club is indeed in trouble. if however you are wrong then some of you will no doubt disappear because you wont have the courage to admit you were wrong.
I don't know whats going to happen but I am willing to accept the boards word for now and will wait to form an opinion based on actual facts not just rumour and guess work/gut feeling.

Over the time - you have tried to dominate on this Forum - but all I see are the witterings of an old man - who is loyal - but not that passionate about the SAINTS - do us all a favour and give it a rest.
You have got a lot wrong in that post, including the spelling of Osprey. It doesn't take courage to post stupidity, but it takes intelligence to show respect. I don't post for popularity, I don't dominate the Forum, I just post my views which can be disputed by anyone else, I don't abuse people either. I also don't claim to be the most passionate fan on here, I am just an ordinary Saints fan, that doesn't suffer fools gladly. I see some of your posts under whichever name you are using currently as foolish and I am not averse to telling you. Perhaps you should step back and wonder why? Are you ordering me to stop posting then? That seems to be the way you operate. A classic bullying attitude is it not?

P.S. Whether I am popular or not is the least of my concerns but occasionally I hit the mark and make people think, and if they think positively about my Club, then my work is done.

He's 'taking you on' because you do not represent the views of a single other Saints fan, oh and because you sound about twelve with your immature comments and total ignorance. Grow up.

Other posters like Seed and Junction7 post - how they see it - and that is refreshing rather than a long line of happily clappers.

What are your views on the new Manager - and getting in players to progress this Club -or do you not really care so much. COYR

I have seen this view from others and I just wonder what "proof" we have that the decision to sack Adkins was the correct one. None of us know what we would have achieved had Adkins stayed. Maybe we would have finished lower than 8th this year, maybe not. But I am pretty sure of a few things. Saints were on the up under Adkins when he was sacked. Adkins never wasted as much money as MoPo did on Osvaldo. And Adkins would not have left us at the first sign of interest from one of our rivals. The truth is none us know if the decision was correct......includi
ng me.
And on the subject of Adkins, whilst I am as desperate as all true Saints fans not to lose anymore of our key players, everyone must see the irony in us demanding loyalty from our players and manager when the club showed zero loyalty to a man who achieved two promotions for Saints. Unfortunately the days of loyalty died when Le Tiss retired. Now we will have to watch as LPool continue to illegally tap up our players and there is nothing we can about it except hope they continue to believe in the Saints journey.
This is not what this thread is about but just wanted to get that off my chest!
Good luck to SRL and thanks for everything you did for the Saints.

one of our so called `fans` has today posted twice and both of those posts were attacks on other fans, why would you think that's a way to behave on a forum where different views are shared? why wouldn't this `fan` feel the need to thank rickie for what he has done for the club? as they say it takes all sorts.
all I can say is keep the insults and abuse coming, I cant speak for ospers, but its water off a ducks back to me.
time will tell with the club and its intentions and if that's not good enough for you then tough, theres nothing any of us can do about it. if all your negative views, sorry realistic as you call it, come true then the club is indeed in trouble. if however you are wrong then some of you will no doubt disappear because you wont have the courage to admit you were wrong.
I don't know whats going to happen but I am willing to accept the boards word for now and will wait to form an opinion based on actual facts not just rumour and guess work/gut feeling.
Once again a good post, well made, thank you. I do have feelings, but abuse just gets ignored in my case. I get what I deserve as I probably talk too much and some don't like it up 'em.

A totally fair point - I just think we upped our levels across the board after MoPo; fitness/desire/techn

One thing that I definitely think is true about Nigel is that he saw Southampton as his pinnacle - and we need to find a manager who feels like that again and doesn't just see us a stepping stone.

RICKIE,

I have THANKED you for your contribution on another thread.

You had 100 per cent support from the SAINTS FANS - (thanks for the No to Rascism Shirt - you threw my way)

I am with the SAINTS CROWD a hardcore Supporter. You have given in and moved in with the Liverpooooool scum.

WE CLEARED LFC Supporters from our Hardcore areas (as they were getting a bit above themselves)

YOU ARE NO LONGER SAINTS - and my support for you has gone.

There is ZERO TOLERANCE to rival Clubs. Every time you miss control the ball at St Mary's or fire one of your free kicks in the Stand and miss - I will cheer.

GOOD LUCK ON THE BENCH.

He's 'taking you on' because you do not represent the views of a single other Saints fan, oh and because you sound about twelve with your immature comments and total ignorance. Grow up.

Other posters like Seed and Junction7 post - how they see it - and that is refreshing rather than a long line of happily clappers.

What are your views on the new Manager - and getting in players to progress this Club -or do you not really care so much. COYR

A totally fair point - I just think we upped our levels across the board after MoPo; fitness/desire/techn

ical accomplishment. We did make some dodgy signings admittedly. Perhaps Nigel would have taken us further. One thing that I definitely think is true about Nigel is that he saw Southampton as his pinnacle - and we need to find a manager who feels like that again and doesn't just see us a stepping stone.
Yep. Agree 100 per cent with that. Here's hoping...........

by the way you might want to look up some facts before you make yourself look even more stupid. the reported £50mill doesn't include payer sales. if the rumour is true its £50mill and the money from player sales, whoops made yourself look stupid again!
as for loyalty, yes you did have 15k fans turn up last season, you know the season you were going to tear up L2 but struggled to avoid relegation! how many of those fans are going to turn up this season? unfortunately we cant tell you how many fans we had turn up in L2 because weve never been there, yes we know you have before and in a couple of seasons and a promotion you might get back there. oh by the way talking of loyalty, how many of those 15k put their hands in their pockets to save your pathetic club? 2k wasn't it? had to be rescued by the `presidents` who now have more board members and the controlling share. wont be long until they buy the truss out and your little experiment of being a fan owned club will come to a whimpering end. what return do you think the fans will get on their investment of £1k? hopefully the 2p in the pound of the 20p in the pound you screwed the taxpayers out of!

OSPRAY - You constantly post stupidity - occasionally childish (remember yesterday with your smartypants post to Seed ) and when you were away in Ireland- it was a breath of fresh air not to read your regular updates of football scores or trying to mix it up by INSISTING that every post is positive or CONFORMS to your way of thinking.

Surely you are intelligent enough to understand that a healthly Forum needs varying views and questioning (quality controlling) are we doing the right thing and for what reasons and let Saints Fans state their case - even if in hinsight it was not the correct view.

You have the bullying attitude - no-one else.

We agree that there is zero Tolerance to RACISM.

You post about THUGGERY as if it is rife - but in the last year or two where I have from time to time logged in and read posts - there has been no incidents and no-one has seen any violence when travelling home and away to games.

YOU MARKET yourself as just a fan who may talk a tad too much - whose job in life is to get everyone to think positively about the Club. Really ?.

LOL - GET A LIFE ! - Constantly Posting about niff and trivia - nitpicking spelling -and feeling the need to comment on other posts which do not hold the same rose coloured view has left you foolish and unpopular.

Let's have a full discussion with varying views on subjects rather than everyone posting what you want to hear. Over the time - you have tried to dominate on this Forum - but all I see are the witterings of an old man - who is loyal - but not that passionate about the SAINTS - do us all a favour and give it a rest.[/p]
P.S. Whether I am popular or not is the least of my concerns but occasionally I hit the mark and make people think, and if they think positively about my Club, then my work is done.[/p]
GIVE US ALL A REST !![/p]
But he has a much right to be on here and annoy people as you and me. Rising_Son

You have given in and moved in with the Liverpooooool scum. WE CLEARED LFC Supporters from our Hardcore areas (as they were getting a bit above themselves) YOU ARE NO LONGER SAINTS - and my support for you has gone. There is ZERO TOLERANCE to rival Clubs. Every time you miss control the ball at St Mary's or fire one of your free kicks in the Stand and miss - I will cheer. GOOD LUCK ON THE BENCH.
He has the right to be on here - but does have to constantly post ad nauseaum.

He should show RESPECT and TOLERANCE to other fans views.

If a SAINTS FAN posted that Rickie was a Legend - but did not love us half as much as he claimed and to him we were his Number 2 Club

OR

If a SAINTS FAN posted that an analogy of Rickie is like a husband leaving his wife for a lover and claiming he will always love his wife and the wife was FURIOUS and had the knives out ...

SO BE IT - You can understand the sentiment and do not have the question - nitpick or bully the other Fan. Junction 7 (although I have not met him) I perceive as a TOP SAINTS FAN - yet did he need all the questioning ablut his loyalty yesterday - he is entitled to his views.

IF YOU OWNED A ZOO AND ONE OF YOUR LIONS WAS SOLD ON CHEAPLY ON A WHIM - Would you be happy ????

The only AGRRESSIVE CLUB are LFC anf their Board - this is not the gentlemans game of cricket - and individuals on our Board IMO have been seen in a different light and found wanting.

LET OTHER SAINTS FANS EXPRESS THEIR VIEWS.

Foot Soldier, No one on here can stop another poster from giving their views. You have also exercised your right to criticise Osprey's posts. It would only seem fair that you accept his right to criticise others' posts too.

It's getting increasingly difficult to filter out all the individual slanging matches on this site to find the genuine comments that have some relevance to Saints.
I want to get some hints, inside information and rumours of what's going on ahead of the done deals which are all that appears on the official site.
Can you guys (you know who you are) please call a truce.
