Bring on Brazil. That’s the message from James Ward-Prowse as he bids to become Saints’ fourth England winner in the annual Toulon international youth tournament.
The midfielder is included in Gareth Southgate’s England squad which is taking part in the French-based competition this week.
Ward-Prowse’s campaign got off to a fine start as he captained England to a comfortable 3-0 victory over Qatar but he acknowledges it will be a tougher test against the South Americans this evening (6.30pm ko).
“We are here to win the tournament – it doesn’t matter who the opposition is,” said the 19-year-old. “They are all quality players, everyone looks up to them as a great footballing nation.
“We have seen clips of them and looking at the game, we will give them respect but we want to win.”
England have won the under-20 tournament four times, in 1990, 1991, 1993 and 1994.
In the second of those years, there were three Saints in the winning team – Alan Shearer, Jason Dodd and Rod Wallace.
Defender Richard Hall was in the squad which won the event in 1993, along with current Pompey manager Andy Awford.
