Echo comment: Why the wall of silence from Saints?

Basingstoke Gazette: Ralph Krueger Ralph Krueger

Whatever happened to the new transparent era of open communication that was promised at Saints?

It’s only a matter of months since such bold statements were made as one regime was swept away to be replaced by another, and on the first big test it is failing.

Over the past few days the Daily Echo has been besieged by emails and calls from worried Saints fans desperate for news, good or bad, on exactly what is going at the club.

There are the two highest transfer offers the club have ever received on the table for two of their top players and a manager who could be on the verge of joining another club. Yet from St Mary’s emanates not a new era of open communication but a wall of silence.

Nobody expects to be told chapter and verse, there are sensitive business issues at stake, but this current lack of communication is almost unheard of, even for clubs who prefer to do things privately.

It’s not a case of feeling sorry for the media, they can do their own work, but the fans.

At the end of it all they are the ones that pay the wages and will turn up and support the club next season, regardless of who is there.

It is their club, and they deserve to at least be given a vague idea of what’s going on.

Premier League clubs rarely make too many public statements, but most will privately let members of the media know the inside story, which then gets passed on to fans.

It’s a way of influencing public opinion, of presenting yourself and your side of the story properly.

The current policy adopted by Saints, fairly or unfairly, gives an air that the club is being paralysed by naivety. It’s not a good look.

So who do we look to for guidance?

Ralph Krueger? He’s the front man, but does his role not extend too much further than that?

Gareth Rogers? He’s the chief executive, but does it turn out he only deals with the financial side of the business?

Les Reed? He has already trumpeted himself as the man dealing with all the football business, so what from him over these massive developments? Nothing.

Of course, if Saints manage to keep their manager and players then the criticism will be batted away.

If they lose one or, heaven forbid, more than one, they will have given the impression that they were fiddling while Rome burned.

Mauricio Pochettino’s contract is the perfect example. The Daily Echo revealed on Monday that a contract offer from Saints had been on the table for a while. What harm is there in the club having said that?

Despite being given the opportunity Saints aren’t talking about it at all – seemingly just desperately hoping it all works out well.

That feeling only intensifies when you consider Reed’s public statement of a few weeks back when he said the club were quite happy to wait until the summer.

Are they being played by Pochettino? Is he stalling just to see if he gets a better offer from elsewhere? How does that affect the potential transfers?

These are basic questions that can be answered, simply by confirming they offered a contract, and that would surely put forward the club’s viewpoint and only help them.

The current situation gives nobody any pleasure.

The fans want to know, they are worried, and understandably so.

This is such a seismic moment for the club that heads need to get unburied from the sand pretty quickly.

Saints and the new board are appearing to lose credibility with supporters.

What’s frustrating is that they do seem well intentioned and like nice guys, but they just are not delivering on their initial promises, and it’s starting to look really bad on them.

Easy to answer your question DE they dont yet have anything to say! Rummers rummers rummers, the club have never liked replying to rummers. I like the fact nothing has yet leaked out of saint marys, like every body else I am desperate for news. Saints staff (katrina, potty chino etc) are dealing with huge sums and the future of our club. Decisions like that should not be made in ten minutes to keep the press happy. Trust Mr Echo trust, you will get your story

adopting factless allens reporting style? what happened to proper paragraphs?

Other than that the only comment I can make is that the club has long held a policy of not talking about transfers, so all the speculation and shouting happening right now is a bit silly tbh.
One particular troll has been pushing out different versions of the same story about Shaw being 100% signed for Man U for about 2 months now.

it's all getting very boring. Do what I'm doing - ignore twitter, ignore the speculation. Deal with it IF (

Anyway I expect everyone is having a few days off after the long hard season, maybe?
The three boys out in portugal are embarking on an absolute fantasy trip to brazil and will have nothing else on their minds, and thats how it should be, we all should be focusing on allowing are boys to get into the mood to bring the glory back to us. Ofcourse you wouldnt expect the media wolves to respect that, and thats what is happening, Poch is going to the world cup after a well deserved break with the family, his contract is ready to sign and then he can start to focus on the next season when SFC will fly even higher, with AL and LS still tearing up the opposition.
Poch is going nowhere, AL is going nowhere, LS is going nowhere, mark my words...!

Got the feeling there is a lot of bartering going on. What happens here hinges on MP and what he does depends on the board and their ambition. Should imagine they are trying to find middle ground where they can come to a compromise on what sort of war chest that MP wants and the fact he will want to keep all the players.
At the end of the day we have a great youth system and fantastic facilities, I think with the family feel here he would be loathe to leave and will only do so if his terms are not met.
There is a vibe about building a team to challenge for the league, something special, more so than a ready built team of misfits.
Saints are faced with a situation where they have to show ambition or we will lose the manager and players. So what MP needs and plus some players contracts being upgraded with more money, there is a lot to discuss. No doubt if it is out of KL's budget she has to talk to family members and they need to meet. So its not straight forward. its very involved and complicated and Saints should of made more effort before this. The have engineered a situation now they may find they have no control of because they have not ascted before.

It is frustrating but I'm sure that this whole 'will he wont he' issue (apply that to all three of the current protagonists) is directly linked to a whole lot more than just three people possibly leaving. Like what are the immediate and long term plans or 'projects' of the new board. Only they can't just plonk some pure fantasy and worthless numbers on a sheet of paper (As Leicester appear to be doing) and the press are pushing for something to fill their papers before the world cup. Hence in my opinion, phrases like 'must sign before the world cup' should really read 'must sign before the world cup as the premiership has ended and there's a whole month before we can begin to put Hodgson to the sword'. All I've seen is words on newspapers websites suggesting this and that. Of course I'm clinging on to hope but at the same time, the power of the press is overwhelming.

PS Why is posting comments such hard work? I rattle off words that normally contain the odd spelling mistake but when I review here, there's letters missing all over the place. Presumably, that also goes for the headline spelling error - Even if we have a new newspaper name, commet is comet:)

Going to be fun next season getting a team out without a manager, Adam, Luke, Morgan, Dejan, Jay, Jack, Callum...have I missed anyone?! :D
Alternatively, what a team we will put out with all of them, plus another top draw centre half and David Villa up front?!

On another note, can anyone OFFICIALLY confirm that we do indeed have genuine 'offers on the table ' for Lallana and Shaw? I thought it was only speculation? The article above seems to state we have received them? Can anyone clarify for me please?

The club has already said that nobody will be sold if Poch doesn't want them to go

An offer may have been made for two of our players but I don't see them biting the buyer's hand off in a desperate rush to leave - this tells me they are at least carefully thinking about the offer and perhaps waiting for the club to make a counter-offer. It all takes time.

interestingly my whole post didn't show.

did anyone else listen to Franny Benali on Talksport last night talking about Pochettino and Saints?
I lost count of the amount of times he and the presenters used the phrase 'its a shame'. It was such an overwhelmingly negative interview as well - Franny sounded positively depressed. What gets me is that everyone seems to be convinced that we HAVE to sell.
forgive me if my maths is a little weak but.... didn't we just get close on 80 or 90 million for being in the PL this season? So even if the 27 million WAS a problem it surely can't be any more! And that still leaves us 50 million-ish to play with?

I seem to receive brickbats for remaining positive ho hum.
Instead I shall talk about Hodgson - it doesn't matter what he does, every England manager is damned by the press before they start. Personally I think the team should go out to Brazil and play without fear. They really don't have anything to fear so they may as well just go and enjoy themselves, give it a go and see what happens. As long as the team comes out of the tournament and I can see that they tried their best I will be satisfied.

This would then be backed up by the players themselves making a statement committing themselves to saints and the manager signing the new deal.

The club look to bring in new faces to move club forward.

We can then enjoy the summer and World Cup looking forward to August.

Just about sums up current media situation, people taking hearsay, rumours and mere conjecture and presenting it as fact.

Potch all over papers yesterday and nowhere to be seen today? Well, what a surprise! Just shows the Spurs story was just that.

Could he go? Of course he could - ditto AL, LS and others. Point is no one - least of all the media - currently have a clue because it's all happening as it should, behind closed doors and in private. Yes, we may not like it, but in some ways the silence is good because it shows the whole situation is being handled professionally and diligently. When things are decided, agreed, firmed up and otherwise sorted a statement will be made and not before.

What more can the Club say at the moment?
Players will come, some will stay other will leave, same as Managers.
The only constant is us the Fans.
One thing for sure, the players being ripped to pieces in the Media(London based) rumor mill are all under long term contract and will be going nowhere unless it suits the club, if they move on so be it, would we like them to stay?, of course we would, will they? well only time will tell, so long as we keep growing as a club, keep producing some of the best English young players in the country and hopefully get better over a period of time, what more can we ask for?
The future is bright, and its still Red & White.

When the board said they had inherited a bad financial situation, they were branded as naive.

Stating that MP had been offered a new contract, some time ago, but had not signed it, would just add to the media feeding frenzy.
Maybe they are wising up and regretting their comments about being transparent, because everything they have said gets twisted.

Is MP stringing the club along? IMO, and I said this a couple of months ago, yes he is.

Whilst accepting that players / managers come and go I see very little point in spending millions on the academy and training facilities and building up a reputation second to non if we are simply turning out future stars for the "bigger" clubs to buy as and when it suits them. I feel we are very much at a cross-roads now and if MoPo does leave and 3 / 4 players following suit then unfortunately all we can really hope for is to be seen as a mid-table at best. if Shaw & Lallana do leave and achieve success at their new clubs and with Walcott, Oxlade Chamberlain & Bale as prime examples it does not take any real brain power to realise that our up and coming stars will be hungry for similar success. Unfortunately the loyalty shown by Matt Le Tissier is. in today's world, a very rare commodity.

Reported, yes, but 100 times?

Alas, you're right about one thing, the DE does seem to have become 'no different to any other (newspaper) in the country'. And before you accuse me of always being negative about the DE, I've regularly congratulated it when it's taken the trouble to write something worthy of praise and - NO - not only when their articles are positive about the Saints.

It has an agenda here and the agenda is not a healthy one.

What a stupid article. What are the club supposed to do when there is nothing to say? Issue statements that there is nothing to say? And if so, with what frequency?
Given the amount of newsprint and web-space devoted to the Saints by the Southern Daily Echo, it would be nice to have some indication of what their editorial policy towards the Club is.
Of late they ignored the great scarf give-away at Swansea, as well as the free food and drink vouchers and the fact the Club also gifted supporters the masks. It also slipped the Echo collective mind (for lack of a polite alternative) that the Player of the Year evening was broadcast live from St Mary’s and can still be seen on YouTube.
Is this incompetent journalism? Laziness? Or is there a motive behind these and other omissions in Saints’ ongoing story?

I think Pochettino is being rather clever. he knows that he is wanted at Saints. The longer he leaves his contract unsigned, the less likely any player will be allowed to leave no matter what sums are offered. He will have told the club what he wants in terms of signings. My worry is that Les Reed is not up to the job of overseeing transfers especially international ones, I mean compare him to Nicola Cortese for gods sake. The club needs to say something soon because their silence is really deafening and could end up beng counter productive.

I guess the only thing the club could say would be similar to what BigBugBuzz says above-that NOTHING being reported in the press is true ,and next season manager and players will ALL still be here. If not, even to comment that contrary to the media rumours, NO offers / contact has been made for any player or staff member, and in the event there is contact, it will be given an immediate, polite, but very firm NO.

I am gobsmacked by the ineptness that allowed our 'supposed' awkward finances public, we have a billionaire chairwoman ffs…

…seriously no one, not anyone, need ever have thought our best were up for sale because of finances…

Make no mistake ever since the early 90's we have with the odd exception been a nowhere club fighting relegation now just as we enter a golden dawn it could be cruelly snatched away…..

There is no need for us to be in this situation our billionaire owner is so ahead of the game financially she could have given us a shot at the big time and made us a global name, the legacy lives on once you have done this, if not she should have allowed NC's consortium to do so.

Few people enter football to make money, it is a community project and our owner does not 'need' to let us down.

I am annoyed more than I can print and it is all so unnecessary.

I think the DE are reading a little too much into this, but is tiring when every time the DE write a piece that is even slightly critical of the club the rube element start getting all sensitive. If you don't want to read a journalist asking what is a perfectly fair question DON'T read it.

Instead this thread will now be cluttered with that element sniping at other posters for agreeing with the DE.

The reason the club isn't saying much is because they have obviously had some bids and now it's down to the individual players. What is to be gained for the club by giving inside details to the press?

""It’s a way of influencing public opinion, of presenting yourself and your side of the story properly. ""

Echo - this article is like a schoolboy argument in a playground and presents a level of infantile logic that defies description. It's all utter cobblers - the business dealings of the club DO NOT have to be in the public domain and there is certainly no obligation to put "your side of the story" unless the club chooses to do so..

Echo - you have to wait and see like the rest of us, and report on it when you know the facts. Anything else deserves to be dumped with whoever does the horoscopes.

What the fans want is answers not speculation, if there is no information to give then none should be given. I appreciate there is frustration and concern but what type of reply do you really expect? Cortese had the right idea and in such deals as we are seeing now that should remain the same.

The new board has only given the broad strategy and general comments on future intent. The details are private until formally announced. Live with it !!

The Echo is trying to get some "inside track".. why should the club give them that? These negotiations, if indeed there are any, MUST remain private. For heavens sake this is a multi million-pound business - you dont expect the telephone coompanies, or the drugs companies or the high street store companies to give out sensitive business information so why is it different for a football club? Simple - it isn't !!

This is very disappointing rabble rousing pseudo journalism and should be dispatched to the bin where it belongs.

you are, of course, correct RS, St. Markus and his brother and sister took over the Liebherr empire after their father died. St Markus was given equal shares in the German holding company in the 1980s when the business moved its management headquarters to Switzerland. He later handed most of his shares back to his family, and ran his own group of companies, the Mali Group, from 1994 until his death.

His holding company, DMWSL 613 Limited, bought English Football League side Southampton in July 2009, which took the club out of administration.

saints were solely owned by St Markus and after his sad passing it was run by the holding company, which was run by NC, as per St Markus`s wishes. the club was intestate until earlier this year when KL took over ownership.

Can whoever wrote this please be put back onto the the weather forecast or a discussion on their favourite knitting pattern.

The fans are frustrated, but that is NOT the clubs fault, its a consequence of our success and growing awareness of our star players and future intentions. Its the stuff of banter, gossip and debate.. nothing wrong with that .. but to expect a massive business concern to offer up sensitive commercial infornation to a local rag is simply ridiculous.

This is pure rabble rousing and unworthy. Does the DE really expect to develop a professional relatioinship with the club when it behaves like a child wanting to know what it's getting for Christmas and resorts to bleating and tantrums.

Are there any nightschool courses you could send these inept scribblers on ?

Saints will say what they want to say and when. Quite right too. Delicate and crucial negotiations are probably still ongoing with Pocho re the Club's ambitions and 5 year plan. His continuance as Saints' manager or his departure is key to the whole situation. If he stays, our star players will be more likely to as well.

Until there's news to report, The Echo should keep quiet.

The way I hear things are going, although this is technically still hearsay, is this:
1) Saints expect MoPo to sign a new deal. possibly by the end of this week.
2) All bids for Shaw and Lallana will be rejected no matter how big they are, as they "are not for sale".
3) Cork, Fonte, Spiderman, Shaw, Lallana will all receive their new contracts to sign in the 1st week of preseason.
4) Kasper Schmeichel has agreed terms already.

NOW, as I said, this is only hearsay. No shooting me down if it doesn't pan out like that, but I'm sure we would all welcome that!

Oh yeah, Fox and Guly are no longer with us and Isgrove has finished his very productive loan spell with the posh, whose fans all want him to stay!

Now feel free to write an article about those comments Daily Echo, just don't say that I told you!

We were promised transparency and at a time when most fans expect dialogue, side-stepping of the conjecture and tabloid fodder, end of the season is the exact time for that and rather than having little feedback, it is almost nothing. Less than noting. Actions speak louder than words Kathainaand Krueger.

What are the plans and aspirations for Saints next season? It's not as though the ending of the season was a surprise.

In case anyone missed it, Ralph Krueger spoke to Radio Solent after the game on Sunday. He asked for trust and patience, and confirmed that bids were quite likely coming in after the window opened, that's the following day.
Another fact, that was when Roy and others announced their World Cup squads, and this is, allied to Spurs usual behaviour with the insitu Manager, has fuelled more speculation.
This is all speculation, and whilst a very minute percentage of what has been talked about has happened, you learn nothing from trying to read between the lines, indeed,in the meantime, I do recommend that all parties use the break to concentrate on their speling and book lernin.

We have had a fantastic season and as such there was always going to be speculation, rumour, interest, call it what you will within the media surrounding our best players and manager I accept that, but if we wish to push on and challenge for Europe we have to keep hold of our best players and build on the foundations put in place by the club and latterly the management team. With season ticket renewals currently in place I think we need know where the clubs ambitions are and whether the finance and desire is there to push on or simply content to stay in the premiership? Players and managers with ambition will always want to better themselves and I for one hope that is wIth Southampton, but if that is not matched by the board when can expect some of them to move on - I just wish they would make a statement as the silence draws me to only one outcome!

you are, of course, correct RS, St.

His holding company, DMWSL 613 Limited, bought English Football League side Southampton in July 2009, which took the club out of administration.

saints were solely owned by St Markus and after his sad passing it was run by the holding company, which was run by NC, as per St Markus`s wishes. the club was intestate until earlier this year when KL took over ownership.

the Liebherr group have never had any stake in our club, to the best of my knowledge. Liebherr-Internation

al AG, of which Isolde and Willi Liebherr are the chief executive and chairman. they are the uncle and aunt of KL but that's as far as it goes.
Thanks for that. I find it very reassuring to have some facts. Sometimes, though, I'm very surprised at how many people seem to find them a nuisance.

The Echo needs to return to the days, when Graham Hiley was part of the furniture at the Dell.
This close relationship is sorely missed, with chances of exclusive interviews and the chance to feed positive informative news to the readers, being missed.
It would be good if the Echo could gain the confidence of this board, much in the same way as the Liverpool Echo has the trust of the Merseyside teams.
Much of the Lallana moving to Liverpool information has been deliberately leaked via this connection. One would guess, that had a similar relationship existed, between The Saints and the Echo, then the Echo would be able to print a response from the horses mouth, instead of asking "Why the silence?"

It's that time of the year! I am depressed at what I read. The club has had a great season achieved a lot with a good manager good coaching staff and a team that seems to have a great spirit and camaraderie. It looks like it's all going to change. The Premier League vultures are circling to pick the flesh off Southampton - MP, Lallana and Shaw are clearly all certainties to leave! Lallana has asked for a transfer. Shaw will go as no doubt he thinks the grass is greener at Manure ( what if Cole joins Manure what game time will Shaw get then?) - M P hasn't had his heart in it for weeks not attending training sessions apart from the week before the last game. The team were describing the club as the 'Titanic' the only question was 'who will jump next?' It's a shame and in a way unfair. I know the club will receive big fees for the personnel who leave and it's the way of the football world but just think where the Saints would be if we'd kept and could keep these golden nuggets we'd probably be playing in the Champions League by now. No doubt the big Premier League clubs just keep a watchful eye on our Academy - how long before Chambers, Ward-Prowse, Reed and Targett are plucked from in front if our eyes. It's going to be a long summer and a lot of rearranging and buying will need to be done!!!!!!
It's that time of the year! I am depressed at what I read. The club has had a great season achieved a lot with a good manager good coaching staff and a team that seems to have a great spirit and camaraderie. It looks like it's all going to change. Saintly depressed Soul,
What a pessimistic, negative comment.
Nobody is going anywhere except for Brazil. These guys all had a fantastic season, you could see the total enjoyment and friendship on the teams faces, week in week out. All have contracts in place. With Ralph tweeking a few payroll cheques and extending contracts, all will be happy to carry on their hard work. This is truly a family club, not a corporate raider like the big guys. We will improve and advance, that's what they want. Instant gratification into the unknown is not comforting to these young lads. They still like mummy's cooking ffs.

......well whats the panic?....its been a great ride the last few years.......we spent season after season scraping through Prem survival...then going bust......its been tough being a Saints fan......and now I'm sitting back in my armchair with a smug look on face after a fantastic season.....so what if we loose a few of our fantastic servants playing to a higher level..we should be proud...and we could pocket 50-70 mill...that means no more debt and money to invest,.......... do we want to go through being in the ***t again?...our academy is becoming the envy of Europe...we can attract the best of young talent cause they know they could play if good enough...we have a fantastic base as a modern football club....and finally the same for poch..so what if he's going to do a runner like Hoddle.............w
e can now attract some of the best managersaround cause its now a great job....and remember how much of our squad did he recruit any way.....so rejoice in a great season and wish all the lad, what ever the countr,y the best for brazil

Similarly, if you don't want to read the "tube element start getting all sensitive", why do you? Nobody's makingYou read it.
Come on RS we obviously have someone here who is `in the know`! don't criticize a poster that has solid information from the club or we might not get the inside info like this again.
`the club isn't talking because they obviously have had bids and its now down to the players` so with this `inside info` its obvious then that the bids have come in and been accepted! wow this is hot news, and we`ve been given an exclusive before SKY or the fail! come on redandy10 let us know how much the bids are and who they are for, and from which club, don't let us down and leave us hanging, we are all on the edge of our seats.
Oh the snipping's started. Didn't take long!

who started the snipping? who started calling other fans names on this thread first? oh yes that's right you did! and why did you do it? ecause you don't like your opinions being proven wrong!
you quote your opinion as if its fact and then get annoyed when fans tear it to bits or ask questions regarding any FACTS you have to back up your opinion!
you can post all the negative `this players going` `that players going` carp all you like, it really doesn't bother me, but don't expect fans not to question you when you post stuff as if you know whats going on!

do you know why the club isn't talking then?
do you know that the club has received bids?
do you know I the club has accepted those bids?
do you know if the clubs are talking to our players?
to save you the bother, unless you have inside info (in which case what are you doing posting it here), you know the same as all the rest of us, which is nothing!
you have an opinion of what you think is going on, that's it, you have no proof, no evidence to back it up, nothing!

I quite expect I was cheering on the Saints, waving my satin scarf above my head in the Milton Road 'choccy boxes' before you were even born petal.

so pipe down Sonny.
Ah, you didn't actually answer the question, did you?

You also show a tendency to jump to conclusions about other people on the basis of no information. Not a very wise thing to do in my opinion, as it can make you look very stupid.

"Lallana has asked for a transfer"

has he? really you know this as a fact do you where did you get this from? who in the club told you this? when did he do it? come on to say something like that you must know something the rest of us and the media don't!

or are you posting you opinion and guess work, based on no facts what so ever, as fact?
the rest of the post is depressing its not even worth commenting on but at least its mainly just your opinion.
come on people we can have a decent debate here. there are always lots of different views and opinions but lets just stick to real facts and don't confuse your own opinion as facts. its getting boring!

I don't know if any player or if the manager will leave I have o inside info or facts other than those already provided by the club. as it stands no players have left, no bids received or accepted, no transfer requests handed in and no approach from any club for MP who as of yet hasn't signed a new contract. those are the facts, not the constant rumours from the media. if and when things change the club will let us know, we will then have more facts.
