England manager Roy Hodgson wants the futures of Luke Shaw and Adam Lallana decided before the end of the month.

Hodgson has selected the pair, along with their Saints teammate Rickie Lambert, in his squad for this summer’s World Cup.

Since the season ended on Sunday, both Shaw and Lallana have been the subject of major bids, from Manchester United and Liverpool respectively.

Hodgson is aware that could be a significant distraction for the two players, and he is keen for their futures to be resolved before England fly to Miami on June 1 to finish their preparations for Brazil.

“So much is out of my control,” said the England boss.

“You don’t control players moving or being the subject of transfer speculation. This is something which happens.

“What I make very, very clear to everyone is that I accept the reality of the situation, and anything that happens is not going to be allowed to affect us.

“As far as I am concerned, you sign up for this World Cup and you sign up to do a good job for England.

“Your club future is what it is and it will be taken care of outside of England time. That is basically all I can do.

“I was asked ‘Would you like all of this to be sorted before you go to Miami?’ Of course I would.

“It is not an ideal world and that might not happen, but the one thing I am going to be very firm on is, when we are together with England, we are England and it is England that matters, and if you have got matters to resolve you do it outside of England time.

“I am thinking about medicals in particular. I can’t stop phone calls.”

Hodgson added: “I am going to make it very clear to the players, and I have made it clear to them already, and I think they are perfectly happy with it, that England is England and your club is your club. The two are not married together.

“I don’t try as England manager to have any effect on you and your club and what you do at your club.

“But, on the other hand, you must accept when you come here it is us that matter. “So, if you take a simple example, on a medical it will have to be done outside of England time.

“Having said that, if we were in Miami and it was a last-minute thing and they wanted to send a doctor over and we had a free afternoon, and could Adam Lallana go and do a medical in his free afternoon, I am not going to say you can’t do that.

“But what I am trying to say is I am definitely not going to have agents swirling around, or this player has got to leave the camp.

“I would expect the players to understand that.”

The England manager is also confident that Shaw, who is just 18, will not be affected by the possibility of joining Manchester United.

“From what I know of him, I think he’s quite a strong lad mentally,” said Hodgson. “But he will get a lot of help from us to make sure his head doesn’t get scrambled.

“I can’t give any guarantees, of course. But there was never a thought in my mind that I might not choose this or that player, who deserves to be there, because this situation could arise.

“It’s a perpetual situation that we have to be prepared for and deal with. But you’ve at least heard my thoughts on how we’d deal with it. Then we have to wait and hope that a) it gets resolved quickly if there’s any resolution to be done and b) that it doesn’t scramble people’s heads.”
