How many farewells will we see at Saints v Manchester United?

Basingstoke Gazette: Adam Lallana Adam Lallana

IT could well be a day of farewells at St Mary’s tomorrow as the curtain is brought down on a memorable Premier League campaign.

Certainly for the visitors, where Ryan Giggs takes caretaker charge of Manchester United for the fourth and last time.

A veteran of 34 trophies for the Red Devils – winning the PFA Young Player of the Year award for the first time in 1992, two years after Matt Le Tissier had lifted the same award – Giggs could pull on a United shirt for the 964th and last time.

Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic will definitely be lining up for United for the last time.

Ferdinand, who has played 454 games for United and won 14 trophies, is out of contract this summer and with a new manager coming in – almost certainly Dutchman Louis Van Gaal – the former England star’s Old Trafford career looks over.

Vidic will be making his 300th and last United appearance at St Mary’s ahead of a summer move to Inter Milan.

Another United defender, left back Patrice Evra, could also be playing his 379th and last United game.

Van Gaal’s arrival will herald in a new era at Old Trafford after the club finished outside the top three of the top flight for the first time since 1991.

If they finish seventh, it will be their lowest finish since they came 13th under Sir Alex Ferguson in 1989/90 (Saints were seventh that season).

Of course, the farewells at St Mary’s on Sunday might not be limited to the visitors.

We cannot ignore the at times feverish speculation surrounding not only Saints boss Mauricio Pochettino, but also his stellar assets such as Adam Lallana and Luke Shaw.

With the United players previously mentioned, we know already they are nearing the end of their Old Trafford careers. If nothing else, age dictates that.

At Saints, though, that is firmly not the case.

Shaw is only 18 while Lallana celebrates his 26th birthday today.

Shaw has a fantastic career ahead of him, and could easily emulate Ashley Cole in winning a century of England caps at left back.

As for Lallana, he is at the peak of his game.

These are not men with their best years behind them, as is the case at Old Trafford.

The manager also.

Pochettino is only 43, one of the youngest managers in the Premier League.

For Saints to prosper, as Lallana admitted in the Daily Echo earlier this week, the club need to keep hold of their best players and well-liked manager.

Hopefully tomorrow will not be a final farewell to the St Mary’s faithful for the manager, for Lallana, for Shaw.

Of course, we will not know if it is or not.

We might not know for many weeks.

Possibly some months.

We might know quicker, though.

That is often the nature of professional football at this level.

We just do not know. The players probably don’t know either.

So much rests on the shoulders of Saints’ relatively inexperienced board.

The likes of chairman Ralph Krueger, who possesses a great ice hockey CV but is a newcomer to professional football at this elite level.

The pressure appears to be on him to try and persuade Pochettino that he stays a Saint.

Whether the manager stays or goes could impact on several of the players.

There could be a domino effect.

Questions, questions, questions ... and at this moment in time, no answers.

Absolutely no answers at all.

Only speculation.

This is hands down the worst piece of journalism I have ever read. Saints fans are nervous as it is so what is the point of listing all the negatives? Fcuk off echo. Why not make it balanced and put that this season could just be the start of something big for saints? Fans up and down the country admire our team, our manager and our youth set up. We can keep all out players, add a few more and push on. If you haven't got anything constructive to say, then don't say anything at all.

I don't disagree with the Echo about the precarious situation with Poch and players and who may be heading out of the club in the summer but I agree with Saint Dan that this could also be a new and exciting era under a new board. I don't want to read about Man Utd and who is leaving them even if we are playing them. I want to read about who we can say goodbye to tomorrow such as Do Prado etc ... and guess who we might bring in. But most importantly I want to look back at a great season and another big step forward for our Club. Well done Poch and the Team, Thankyou for a great season . Lets look forward to next season and try and get into Europe or maybe win a cup

it could be a day of goodbyes, but then it might not!
what it must be though is a day of celebration, regardless of the result. we the fans have a big role to play and must make sms rock. lets celebrate what a fantastic season we have just had and not worry about MP and the players until Monday! lets not forget that if Osvaldo could have been bothered to try to be the player MP wanted him to be we might have been challenging manure and spuds for 6th place, maybe even everton for 5th.
take your scarfs wave them sing your heart out and have a great day.

If the right people can now match what this FULLY BONDED team has achieved so far, then we will continue to move onwards and upwards. There is a general feeling that if these people can get this right, we can definitely eclipse tomorrow's visitors next season.
Though being greedy, I would love it (really love it KK!) for this to start tomorrow. Make it VERY uncomfortable for the faded Grey Devils, raise the roof Chapel, Itchen, Kingsland and Northam.
UP THE SAINTS. Show 'em what you think of Southampton Success with your TRIUMPHANT cheers for Sholing the nearest FC to The SAINTS.

One thing we do know is that Saints have secured Sam for a few years yet. There's the first to declare his determination to make it with us. Well done Sam. Is this the first little sign that Poochy is starting to put his plans in place for the next five years under his command - I see it as a good omen.

This was no mean feat , now imagine a little player and his agent trying to get one over on her . It will not be who wants to leave but who she gets rid off . If this lady has her fathers dream in her heart WE WILL KEEP ALL OUR BEST PLAYERS AND WILL BE WATCHING CHAMPIONS LEAGUE FOOTBALL AT ST MARY'S in the future. Have faith, have a great day and lets all move forward THE SOUTHAMPTON WAY.
Bring your scarfs and sing all day.

I think the DE are spot on.
Fortunately for us Katharina has shown commitment to the club with a new board which must be to take Saints forward with a new 'five year plan', OR, is it just to stabilise us as a safe mid-table team.
I think the former, but the time to show that is now while we have a good young squad that with four top additions can make a Champions League place next season.
The manager is clearly waiting to see what the board propose before he agrees a new contract and our top players are waiting in turn.
If MoPo is not satisfied then nor will they.
Adam, Luke & Morgan especially want and deserve to be playing in the Champions league. For Adam, now 26 and at his prime for the next 3 years, does he stay and try to do it with Saints but maybe miss the opportunity, OR, go now where he will get that next season and double his money at the same time. I think I would go unless the Board give a big commitment NOW ! If they do decide to let him go it would be good to do so after the World Cup as his value will probably go up.
Adam leaving, more than anyone else, would break up the special unity that has been built up so come on Ralph & Les there is enough money coming in so please, please, please show your intent NOW

I'm confused...having read through all the online papers, nobody talking about any of our players leaving? Oh, apart, of course, from the Mail. Reliably telling us that Lallana to Liverpool is a done deal. 20'million today...
Seriously , what is it with the Mail?!?!
I am nervous still, but have to believe that the next 5 year plan follows what Les Reed said, with a couple more top class additions.
And why would Adam go to Liverpool? Good this season, but not miles ahead of us IMO.

I feel your frustration mate and I've had similar feelings this last couple of months.

What we have to understand is these people have been put in place to do what is best for Saints FC because that is also good for the owner and everyone else drawing a wage in the decision making process (unfortunately that doesn't include us)

They will from time to time, make mistakes, all but inevitable.

What we also have to understand is that Saints FC goes on regardless. I remember Mike Channon leaving us and we all thought it would be the end - it wasn't, we soon had other heroes. When LeGod left likewise. Marian - likewise. What history has show us is that we soon get another shoehorned in. The only truly unique player who saved our rissoles season after season has been LeGod. There will never be another quite like him for sure. Adam is an incredibly clever, subtle and effective player but if he went it would not take us long to find another effective MF with a different style maybe but we would find one, (there may already be one at the club who will grab the chance to step forward and fill those boots - we don't know until they are given the chance). The same can be said about all of our first team squad. We don't want to lose them - only a fool would want to - but if they decide to go, there's nothing we can do except hope that Poochy or whoever takes his place has the faces in their minds to bring in to replace them.

No team stays at the top forever or at the bottom forever - it sometimes seems like it because all fans are impatient and from time to time a little fickle. Saints FC will survive for a great many years yet. I sincerely think we are only going one way and that's up but once we're at the top there's only one way we can then go and that's back down.

I'll listen to the game on Solent and enjoy every minute of it no matter what the score says or the interviewers afterwards says. From tomorrow I'll take more notice of the rumour mill than today. BTW - according to the Daily Wail today Lallana is gagging to sign for Skiverpool who are equally gagging for him to sign. Saw an interview on TV with Brenda who said there had been no talks with Saints or Adam and he's not going to sit down and start dealing for next season before this one is finished. Les Read said something similar - we have no choice but to accept that as fact. No matter what decisions are made and by whom Saints will be a better squad next season than this and this is the best I can remember for many a long year.
