WELLY Old Boys beat nearest rivals New Inn 3-2 to secure the Basingstoke and District Saturday League Premier Division title.

The table-toppers took the lead after 13 minutes last night, Matt Burton slotting home from a narrow angle, but New Inn responded almost immediately through Lee Champion.

However, New Inn suffered a major setback soon after, losing Alex Spencer to a straight red card, and Sam Nicholls’ free-kick had Welly ahead at half-time.

New Inn did not give in and levelled again on 68 minutes, Luke Richardson converting a Champion cross, but Ben Nicholls’ header 15 minutes from time earned Welly the win they required to seal the title.

Two days earlier, Welly had beaten Hook 3-1 to preserve their unbeaten home record. There was no score in the first half but Ben Nicholls put the leaders ahead just after the break.

Hook levelled through Jon Noakes and Welly left it late to claim the win. Michael Morey edged them ahead in injury-time, with Ben Nicholls completing the scoring even later in the day.
