Cardiff hold on for what could be a vital three points. It's a frustrating result for Saints, who dominated much of the game, but the result is far from a disaster for Mauricio Pochettino's side, who remain eighth in the table. Thanks for joining us. We will have a full report and reaction for you on the website shortly, and make sure to see tonight's Sports Pink for even more.

4:58pm

SAINTS 0 CARDIFF 1

4:56pm

CHANCE (89 mins): Wilfried Zaha nearly seals it, breaking clear and bursting between Jose Fonte and Dejan Lovren, only to be denied by Paulo Gazzaniga one-on-one.

4:49pm

CHANCE (82 mins): Another stunning David Marshall stop denies Saints, this time diving low to his left to keep out Nathaniel Clyne's fierce left-footed drive from the edge of the area.

4:46pm

Cardiff: Fabio off, McNaughton on (79 mins).

Saints: Cork off, Do Prado on (79 mins).

4:44pm

CHANCE (77 mins): Saints go close to an equaliser. Morgan Schnedierlin's stunning chipped ball over the top finds Sam Gallagher, but he's denied by a brilliant David Marshall save.

4:33pm

Saints: Chambers off, Clyne on (67 mins).

4:33pm

Saints: Ramirez off, Gallagher on (66 mins).

4:32pm

SAINTS 0 CARDIFF 1 (Cala 65)

It's a goal from out of nowhere, but a huge one for Cardiff, as Cala controls a ball on the edge of the area, moving it into space, before firing a stunning left foot strike into the far corner that gives a diving Paulo Gazzaniga no chance.

4:30pm

Cardiff: Gary Medel off, Wilfried Zaha on (61 mins).

4:30pm

CHANCE (61 mins): Calum Chambers delivers a good cross from the right, which Rickie Lambert glances just over the bar.

4:28pm

CHANCE (60 mins): A rare break forward from Cardiff ends with Jordon Mutch running into space, before firing in a well-struck shot from 25 yards that Paulo Gazzaniga does well to parry away.

4:10pm

The second half is underway.

3:55pm

SAINTS 0 CARDIFF 0

3:51pm

Saints have a penalty appeal waved away by the referee, after claims that Luke Shaw's cross had hit Steven Caulker's arm (38 mins).

3:37pm

CHANCE (27 mins): Rickie Lambert forces David Marshall into a diving save, bending a free-kick over the Cardiff wall from 20 yards after Cala had been judged to have fouled Adam Lallana.

3:32pm

Adam Lallana finds Gaston Ramirez in space on the left side of the area, with the Uruguayan's fierce left-foot shot deflecting off Steven Caulker and crashing against the bar (22 mins).

3:27pm

CHANCE (17 mins): Cardiff have their best effort of the game so far. Fraizer Campbell is fouled by Dejan Lovren just outside the corner of the area. Peter Whittingham takes the resulting free-kick, curling it towards the near post, with Paulo Gazzaniga punching clear. Not a convincing save, but it got the job done.

3:24pm

CHANCE (14 mins): Steven Davis gets slipped in down the right side by Adam Lallana's pass, but his angled shot deflects off Fabio and drifts wide of the far post.

3:07pm

Referee Jon Moss gets the game underway after a minute's silence was held before kick-off to mark the 25th anniversary of the Hillsborough disaster.

3:01pm

Apologies for the lack of updates in the build-up. We have been suffering from technical difficulties.

2:21pm

The Saints keepers have come out to warm-up and each of them is wearing a training top with the number nine on the back, in support of injured forward Jay Rodriguez.

2:15pm

Just one change for Saints this afternoon, with Gaston Ramirez overcoming an ankle injury to start in place of Jay Rodriguez.

2:15pm

THE LINE-UPS:

SAINTS: Gazzaniga; Chambers, Fonte, Lovren, Shaw; Cork, Schnedierlin; S Davis, Lallana, Ramirez; Lambert.

Subs: Cropper, Clyne, Hooiveld, Wanyama, Ward-Prowse, Do Prado, Gallagher.

CARDIFF: Marshall; Theophile-Catherine, Caulker, Cala, Fabio; Medel; Kim, Mutch, Daehli, Whittingham; Campbell.

Subs: Lewis, Turner, Eikrem, Gunnarsson, McNaughton, Zaha, Bellamy.

Referee: Jon Moss.

2:10pm

Basingstoke Gazette: Jay Rodriguez has been rewarded for his impressive form this season

Jay Rodriguez is at St Mary's to watch this afternoon's match, following his horror injury at Manchester City last weekend. The forward has been ruled out for about six months after suffering a ruptured anterior cruciate ligament. Saints boss Mauricio Pochettino had this to say in today's programme notes...

We will give him all of the support he needs, and I know that the players have rallied around him this week, which is typical of the great group of players that we have here.

Mauricio Pochettino

1:55pm

Today's match will kick-off at the later-than-normal time of 3.07pm, to mark the 25th anniversary of the Hillsborough disaster.

1:54pm

1:51pm

Hello and welcome to this Daily Echo blog covering this afternoon's Premier League match between Saints and Cardiff, at St Mary's. Mauricio Pochettino's side are searching for a third conscutive home win today, and they will fancy their chances against a Cardiff team who possess the worst away record in England's top four divisions. The Welsh club desperately need all three points today, as they are currently second-from-bottom and six points adrift of safety. Stay with us for the build-up, team news and match updates.

Hope Gaston has licence to roam, with Luke having more responsibility for providing the width down the left. Gaston, when playing too wide, becomes a passenger.

Disappointed with the lack of younger players, on the bench. Especially as the U21 season is over. With Hooiveld and Guly likely to leave, in the summer, would have preferred a couple of younger players to be given the experience.

Goal coming, I can feel it, but after last week and given the stick the Cardiff fans are giving the lino, I'm just not sure what end it'll be in.

Get the glitter twins off and put a couple of men on. Playing against the worst team in the league and with no urgency. They've got to learn to play at a higher tempo against the lesser teams. Too pedestrian, and too many gimmicky flicks from the glitter twins. Hey, happy-clappers, how are you supposed to make it to Brazil when you're invisible against Cardiff City. Sell Lallana to Cardiff after the season if you want their keeper.

RICKIE AND ADAM cannot score every game - so who will get us goals.

We knew we would miss JROD.

Understand why he plays Gaston as a creator (but he rarely finds the net)

WE ARE ALL OVER CARDIFF - NEED A RUTHLESS GOAL SCORER.

Thought we may play Sam etc to see if we need a Loan Striker. As it presently stands unless a player from the Academy massively steps up then we need a proven STRIKER in the Summer.

MP loves his Team Spirit - and will not have Dani back.

HE WILL NEED TO BE DECISIVE AND ASK FOR THE MONEY FOR AN OUT AND OUT GOAL SCORER - ON LOAN - OR PURCHASE AS JROD WILL NOT FEATURE UNTIL THE SECOND HALF OF NEXT SEASON.

I reckon the Club will continue with Gazza - and if there is no cover at CB - it will cost us plenty of points and we will not bridge the gap to Manure and Spuds.

WE NEED TO BUILD AND IMPROVE YEAR ON YEAR.

However if he starts next season with no quality additions - he will be out as results turn sour.

Every time there was a fullback wide, he had no outlet on the near side, either for a cutback or at the near post. Shaw, Lambert and Davis running their **** off while Lallana and Ramirez take the day off, as usual.

Key moment - ONCE A-FRIGGIN-GAIN - a key decision goes against us.

Had that penalty been given, the whole match would have been different.

That said, it was a poor goal to give away and, despite Marshall occasionally being forced into showing his exceptional ability, once again we didn't do enough with the huge amount of possession we had.

3-0 AWAY to Cardiff - 0-1 HOME to Cardiff; that - and the incompetence of an official - sums up our season really.

NOT RUTHLESS UP FRONT - but Gazza does have a share of the responsibility of the result.

He does not inspire CONFIDENCE and we WILL need the cheque book out as we cannot continue with sick note Kelvin and rabbit in the headlights Gazza as back ups to our Number One Keeper.

IF DO NOT SPEND ON A KEEPER AND ADDITIONAL STRIKE -WE WILL ALL SUFFER THE CONSEQUENCES.

Ditch Guly Hoover etc and put Gazza on loan.

I hate Cardiff more than any other team and we just helped them stay up.
Not at fault for the goal but Gazza has the worst shot saves to goals ratio ever in the premiership (after 5 games played)

Gazza and Guly can go....
Gastòn is still trying but not great.
Taking our best player in Cork off was a mistake by MoPo.
Sell Osvaldo.... buy Marshall and another defender

I feel after this MoPo will think he can't help Saints anymore and move on to another challenge... players could follow him.

I think the problem for reserve goalkeepers is that they get little match time and, when their chance comes, they are not match ready, make mistakes, people get on their backs, they lose confidence and don't fulfil their potential. Neil Moss and Bialkowski are good examples.

Lost count of how many passes were played behind players, instead of ahead of them, totally stopping attacking moves.
We also need to work on defensive headers. Their goal reminded me of Spurs' winner, a few weeks ago, where a poor clearance conceded possession in the danger area.

Was Lallana on the pitch today? Oh, ya, that's right, the only time you noticed him was when he was literally lying on the pitch whining at the ref because one of the big boys knocked him over. Oh, ya, and I noticed him playing Shaw and Lambert into dead ends a number of times when he wasn't giving the ball away trying to switch it with his poor leg strength. But, its' OK, you go queue up for his autograph and spend some more money on his shirts. Maybe if Saints are lucky, Moyes will be dumb enough to buy Lallana for too much money in the summer and Saints can buy a couple of men to play midfield for them. :)

We're 8th! We've little left to play for. Cardiff are scrapping for their lives.

Get some perspective, Dave.
Here's some perspective, happy-clapping clown: Cardiff were **** all game until Zaha came on and weren't exactly Liverpool afterwards. And Saints did nothing to score against the worst team in the league. That's poor management and poor team selection. Particularly, the worse-than-useless, softy-twins, Lallana and Ramirez, who don't belong in the league. They are not able to make any impact on a game against the worst team in the division. Enough said. Now, go back to your hero-worshipping.

Is it possible to not be awarded a lucky penalty? We lost today because their negative tactics worked. They crowded their box and though we were by far the better side we couldn't break them down. Too many flicks and stepovers that didn't come off. Both our wing backs got forward well but their balls into the box were very poor. Easy meat for their keeper. All the fringe players failed to impress. My MoM was JC. Would rather have seen him pushed forward than substituted. And maybe JWP brought on to get the whipped crosses in. All in all a very bad defeat to the worst team in the league by a mile. And MoPo was very conspicuous by his absence on the touchline. I thought we were a bit complacent and that's not the first time this season. Three points for the taking just thrown away.

Do you consider Saints players being picked for England as a negative effect?
After Rodrigues injury do you think the other England hopefuls aren't committed enough in case of injury?
I don't go & watch but reading some of the posts that's sounds as if that's what's happening?

It is a double edged sword, they may be pulling back a bit to avoid injury, but it then looks as if they aren't playing very well and that could affect their selection. It would be best if their mind set was to play to the best of their ability and just hope they are not the victim of a mistimed tackle or as in Jay Rods case a bad landing.

totally agree with you.I might not go to football matches any more but the side needs strengthening & maybe a new goal thirsty striker with either a top notch goalie to take No.1 spot or a goalie on a par with Boruc to do a Wells & Gennoe ( hope I spelt it right?) As I thought they were both great goalies.
