OVERTON United’s Hampshire Premier League title dreams are all but over following a last-gasp defeat at the hands of visiting Clanfield on Saturday.

The game looked destined to end goal-less but the hosts gave possession away in a dangerous area and Clanfield bundled home an injury-time winner to claim all three points.

The result leaves Overton, who were in contention for the title a few weeks ago, seventh in the table, well behind the top sides.

Manager Titch Bloomfield said: “We have had an awful few weeks. We have just not been able to find the consistency that we showed from September until the end of February, when we were excellent.

“We have exceeded all expectations and all we want to do now is put in a good run until the end of the season and see if we can get into the top three or four.”

Last Wednesday, Overton had come from 3-1 down with less than 10 minutes remaining to grab a point against high-flying Winchester Castle.

Chris Lavisher gave home side Overton the lead after 15 minutes but Winchester levelled before half-time and scored twice more in the second half to lead 3-1 going into the closing stages.

However, the hosts hit back, with Dave Parry nodding home from a long throw to reduce the deficit and Lavisher getting his second goal of the game from Chris Morris’ through-ball to earn his side an unlikely point.

Bloomfield said: “It was a good point in the circumstances. The lads showed a lot of character and did not allow their heads to drop.”

Next up for Overton is a home game against ninth-placed Colden Common on Saturday.
