DJS Telecoms beat Hampshire Irons 2-1 to win the Basingstoke B Cup at the Winklebury Football Complex on Saturday, writes Peter Raynbird.
Irons had the first chance of the game in only the second minute as Tom Chant hit the post with DJS’ goalkeeper Warren Hopkins well beaten.
DJS took the lead after 11 minutes as a swift move up field found George Lagden on the left and he headed down perfectly for Lee Neal to score from 10-yards out.
Irons’ captain Tom L’Heureux saw his 25-year effort tipped over the bar by Hopkins and James Arnold also fired over.
DJS had more of the ball and chances fell to both Neal and Lagden before the break.
They continued to impress after the break as Lagden forced a fine save from Jack Rickard and the dangerous Allan Morgan headed wide on 50 minutes.
Neal was always in the action up front. Only another good save from Rickard stopped him scoring a second and he also hit the bar with a 25-yard shot.
DJS made it 2-0 on 63 minutes, as Danny Dedman’s right wing cross was volleyed in from 25-yards out by Morgan.
Irons’ manager Craig Hopper brought on substitutes Jay Greene, Steve Brown and Simon Head in the late stages, but the DJS back line of Pete Lomax and Chris Hobson held firm.
With a minute left, Greene took a corner from the left, which eluded everyone in a crowded six-yard box, and ended up in the net via a defenders’ knee.
