Andy Carroll furious as suspension rules him out of Saints clash this month

Andy Carroll's thoughts appeared clear after the Football Association upheld his red card in West Ham's Barclays Premier League win over Swansea, and the resulting three-match ban.

He will now miss the clash with Saints later this month, which would have pitted him directly against Rickie Lambert - the man who stands between Carroll and a place in the England squad for this summer's World Cup finals in Brazil.

The 25-year-old had been the focal point of the Hammers' attacking display, setting up both Kevin Nolan goals in Saturday's 2-0 victory at Upton Park, before he was sent off by referee Howard Webb having tussled with Swans defender Chico Flores.

West Ham manager Sam Allardyce said after the game that the club would appeal against the decision, with Swansea counterpart Michael Laudrup suggesting the sending-off had seemed 'a little harsh'.

But the ban will now remain in place and Carroll sent a tweet yesterday afternoon shortly before the official statement suggesting he was aware of the decision, as he simply wrote: ''DISGRACEFUL''.

The Football Association clarified the reasoning behind the decision not to overturn Webb's decision in a short statement on its official website.

"As stated in the Rules and Regulations of The FA, an Independent Regulatory Commission must apply the test of whether the decision to dismiss a player was 'an obvious error'," it read.

"The decision of an Independent Regulatory Commission in relation to a claim of wrongful dismissal is final and binding on all parties and is not subject to appeal."

Carroll, who has only recently returned to the first-team fold following an eight-month injury lay-off, will now miss the Hammers' next three fixtures.

That rules him out of Saturday's clash with Aston Villa and the two home fixtures against Norwich City and Saints as Allardyce looks to steer his side out of the Premier League relegation zone.

The absence of club-record signing Carroll has been one of the major factors in their poor first half to the season, with the win over Swansea just the fifth league victory of the campaign.

That poor form was compounded by a 5-0 defeat against Sky Bet Championship side Nottingham Forest in the third round of the FA Cup and an embarrassing 9-0 aggregate reverse in their Capital One Cup semi-final against Manchester City.

Now sitting 18th, just a point inside the relegation zone, Carroll's return from a long-standing foot injury injected a much-needed impetus into the Hammers' faltering campaign.

The former Newcastle and Liverpool forward set up a goal on his return from his long-standing foot problem in the 2-0 win at Cardiff and once again showed his value in creating both goals for Nolan in the vital win over Swansea.

But now Allardyce has been hit with the blow of losing his talisman once more and has only Carlton Cole or new signing Marco Borriello to replace Carroll in the starting line-up for the weekend trip to Villa Park.

Cole has recently penned a new deal at the club having re-joined on a short-term contract after being released in the summer, with the former England international scoring five goals so far.

Borriello was brought in on loan in the January transfer window from Roma and the Italy international has yet to feature for Allardyce's side, having notched just once in Serie A before completing his temporary switch to east London.

The FA must have seen the incident the last game when Sam was laughing at Chico on the floor when he dived and they must be able to see that Chico went down this time as if he was hit with a baseball bat. I Dont think Carols arm needed to come round like that but the FA just stick there heads in the sand

Carrolls red card was not overturned because he deliberately swung his are towards a player with the intent of making contact. He knew that Flores was there and he was likely to make contact with him so the intent is there. The fact that Cheato Flores threw himself down holding his face acting as though he had been hit full in the face is a completely different matter. I would have liked the FA to have looked at his behaviour and to give him a 3 match ban also for not only his acting but the way in which he had Carroll in a head lock when he was falling when they contested the header which lead to Carrolls red card. That was obviously not seen by the ref and so could be reviewed by the FA committee.

Carroll elbowed Flores twice in the first half, so I have no sympathy with him.

It must be great to have two players like Carroll and Nolan in your squad. Three straight reds between them this season, all for petulance. A credit to the game and a help to all the other teams in the relegation battle.

Fat Sam's strategy for the season is based around those two with Jarvis and Downing supplying the crosses. Ten years out of date.

Brilliant! And they are going to move to the Olympic stadium! They won't fill it in the Championship.

No, but I'm off to West Ham.

Thankfully, I haven't been sold to them for £8m (doubt anyone would pay 8 quid for my football services), but I have just bought 3 tickets.

It was Plan B because, alas, we dipped out on Liverpool. Fantastic that the club has sold out that one in 48 hours, but very frustrating from my point of view.

As for Carroll, I haven't seen the incident and have absolutely no idea if the red was deserved but I have read enough to know two things:
1. Flores made the most of it and action should be taken against him. (it won't be).
2. Carroll spends half his time falling to the floor trying to con refs into giving decisions his way and getting other players into trouble. Has he ever been punished for this? NO!

So, it's a sort of street justice that was coming to him.

I still think he could be handy in Brazil ....................
....... apparently guys who look like gals and fall at men's feet are in great demand down in Rio.

Of course losing Carroll is a blow to Wet Spam as they're desperately short up front. And his return certainly seemed to give them a much needed big psychological lift at the weekend and his loss will be a blow to their morale - and a blow to Carroll's Brazil chances. Obviously all this also means a weakened team against us.

Nonetheless, I think I can say without a glimmer of bias that Carroll's vicious attack on poor Flores was the kind of thing innocent folk once suffered at the hands of savage Mongol raiders back in those dreadful days when Genghis Khan's raping and pillaging warriors rampaged unchecked. Indeed, I'm surprised that Flores - in my view a perfect sportsman in every respect - is still alive.

No doubt some will say I am not being entirely objective as all this is to our advantage. But regulars on here will of course know that my nickname is not "Confucious the Unbiased" for nothing.

Isn't it great how we can all watch an incident, yet see different things?

I agree with you over the red card, as Carroll was trying to catch Flores, with his arm.
Watching it from behind, you can see his arm accelerate backwards, through the contact with Flores' head, before stopping abruptly, when Carroll realises that Webb is watching him, as can be seen from other camera views.

The incident leading to the arm swinging is where I see it differently. IMO, Flores went for a high ball, whilst Carroll stayed rooted to the ground. As soon as Carroll felt contact, he doubled over, making "a back" for Flores, in an attempt to tip him head first on to the turf. If you watch Flores' arm, he only grabs Carroll, after he has been unbalanced and landed on Carroll's back, in an attempt to prevent himself being thrown to the ground.
I seem to remember Carroll going down very easily, last season against us, and also doubling over in similar fashion, to con the ref into giving him free kicks. It's his and BFS's way, of playing "football".

D.Onkey deserves everything coming his way.
He gristles the whole game about how unfair the refs are to him.
He falls down at every opportunity to cheat the refs to give free kicks.
WHU and D.Onkey deserve each other.
Keep up the good work 3 more games lost, glad I dont have to watch that carp.

Flores should have been sent off for over acting.
Another example of this season's ridiculous refereeing decisions.
It was never a red card, Carroll played very well after a long absence.
Goodbye Cortese !! --- as I've been writing ever since he came to Saints --what goes around comes around and Cortese has got his!!
Matty, Nigel, Alan, Solent Interiors, programme sellers, Franny, The Daily Echo, Jim Steele and all the many others Cortese sh*t on must be rejoicing!

That's more like it. We are almost back to normal. Just need 5 braincells and the dopey Jock back now.

He hit out with intent...so a red card. Games v Villa and Norwich more important to WHU than against us (as they have a chance against them).
True the rule states contact is not necessary. Intent is all that is needed. What Chico did is irrelevant.

Alas, in one respect, he's right, he said, 'what goes around, comes around'. Unfortunately, that includes syphilis, bird flu and the borer.

Spot on Stras. Carroll. He may never had a previous red but he sure as **** should have done. His performances are generally over aggressive and he has dealt more than his share of low blows.

Agree with Stoke and Wet Spam. Quite like going to Palace as I've worked in Croydon (for my sins) so I can go for a few beers in my old haunts. Toucgh call for the third team - I like Chris Hughton, so not Norwich.
