Poch praise for England trio

Basingstoke Gazette: Mauricio Pochettino Mauricio Pochettino

Mauricio Pochettino believes his front three have increased their chances of World Cup selection after firing Saints to a 3-0 win over Fulham.

Adam Lallana, Rickie Lambert and Jay Rodriguez were all on target at Craven Cottage with England boss Roy Hodgson in attendance.

The Saints fans made their feelings clear as they chanted for the trio to be included for the trip to Brazil and Pochettino said: “If Roy Hodgson was in attendance at the game against Yeovil, Arsenal and Fulham he would have seen those three games live and in these three games our strikers scoring goals.

“It was very important that the three strikers got goals and got on the scoresheet and that’s always going to increase their chances of making it to Brazil so that was important for them.”

It was a big win for Saints and Pochettino reflected: “I think in the first half we were a bit mistaken about our set up.

“We knew Fulham were going to be defending deep and would be wanting to close down the spaces for us and that they were going to be trying to go on the counter attack.

“In the second half we corrected certain positions such as Rickie, Adam and Jay’s positions on the pitch and allowed us to get the goal that opened up the game for us and control the game overall.”

Need to show some praise for Cork, I felt it was a disservice to him being replaced by Wanyama so quickly. When he came on we looked a diffrent team. He needs a proper song too.

Great away win!

Totally agree. I felt that since we had corkie back we have seemed to be playing more flowing creative football in the midfield. VW is great strong presence but passing and distribution needs work. Well done corkie. Brought the game alive today.

that's the point, Big Vic needs to play after being out for so long but it was right to replace him a time at half time. as osprey said it did look like he had taken a slight knock.
Yoshi is looking better now hes had some time on the pitch.
lalla ran the game again today and SRL looked to be getting back to top form, great movement and some sublime passes.
with some of the teams above us losing we must surely be looking at how many we can catch. manure in our sights?

Great result to-day,but can I say to poch,Jack Cork is our best midfield player, and Clyne is our best right back, you should never keep them out of the side.It is strange to think that Saints have spent all that money on wasted players, and yet the original side that played to-day were out of this world.I new with Oswaldo out of the way Ricki would come good again, watch him bang in the goals again.Well done the original side to-day.

VW got the game time he needed
Yoshi is looking better each game, drawing confidence with Jose (always thought he just lacked confidence, not a world beater but a solid CB)
Corkie - 3 mil Swansea offered dont make me laugh, most underrated player!
J Rod - just thrives with Lambo in support

Only one sour note really was "Baddesley Bales"blatant dive in the away end at the end of the game. Seedhouse was nowhere near him when he went down like a sack of spuds. Great win, Boruc made 2 great saves fist half, VW understandably looked rusty. My view is that JC is better all round but VW has a defensive solidity that we have missed. I wander if starting with JC and using VW when we get our noses in front would be an option, or away from home against the more aggressive sides use VW first half and bring JC on later in the game.

Either way , great choice to have to make.

The whole team played well today, hope we can keep this run going and get above Manure, Newcastle , Everton and Spurs , I know it's a tough ask , but I don't see those sides having the consistency of Citeh, Chelski and the Gooners .....we have Everton, Utd and the Toon at home !

Either way great season so far, troubled waters are behind us with regards to NC leaving and any disruption that may have caused , the Osvaldo deal shows that whoever is in the negotiating seat is no mug, and we kept all our stars despite agents and papers trying their best to write and report on "news" suggesting they may leave.... pathetic really.

Costa Baz says...

Haven't previously got involved in the Cork v Wanyama, debates, but on yesterday's performance, alone, the differences between the two were immense.

Even allowing for VW's lack of match fitness, there were several times when his lack of movement, off the ball, reduced the passing options, leading to passes being hit longer, leading to passes being cut out and possession lost.
Cork's off the ball movement, is instinctive, always being available to receive passes, especially from the defenders. This resulted in us being able to snuff out the Fulham attacking threat, second half, as we weren't losing the ball in dangerous areas, after having committed players forward.

In possession, despite his considerable strength, VW seems to lose the ball easier, than Cork, who is very comfortable on the ball, even when surrounded by players.

The other plus is that the other midfielders, but Schneiderlin in particular, seem to play with more freedom, in the knowledge that Cork has their back.

If Roy wants a holding midfield player, to replace the aging Carrick, he could do a lot worse than give Cork a go. Probably too late for Brazil, but still young enough to have an international career.

Costa Baz

Sitting in the sun on a golf course in Southern Spain, so only got to see the highlights, but a really impressive and important away win for us, and three super goals- big smile on my sunburnt face! I think it's awesome that we've git three such excellent young fullbacks, and really hope that Targett comes through to give cover to Shaw the way Chambers has for Clyne.
Our front three work so well as a unit- I think we need one more striker in the summer to replace Osvaldo, but not to the detriment of Gallagher's progress.
Cork is playing superbly, and really hope he's next to get a five year deal!
Best time as a Saints fan in my nearly 38 years on this lovely planet! Lets overtake Newcastle now, and win the cup!

Great game and excellent result and the Players love playing for Potchettino, Lallana said he is one of the best Managers in the world, what a huge compliment.

When the Team was announced it was a massive surprise that Wanyama was in not Cork, Cork has busted a gut this season to get in the Team and by the comments on here he has been man of the match in most games,I saw him at St Marys against Man City and to me he was man of the match and to the Supporters around me.

A lot of credit must go to Mauricio Potchettino for his vision and style of Football, he has brought immense excitement and attractive Football and lifted the spirit in the Club, he encourages all the Players to believe in themselves and they can be world class Players. The Players look very fit and eager to play to win for him and the Club and none of the Players want to leave with the exception of one, the bond is what it should be all for one and one for all COYR

stunning few weeks, seeing KL smiling after the Arsenal game and watching young Sam on his PL debut , 9 English players , three 18 yr old's and one 19 yr old when Arsenal couldn't field a single English player at the start ! Alex O-C looked like a fish out of water and I think he's sad he's not part of the party ....... Sir Rickies 100th goal ............... and let's remember , we are still building , Yosh coming in to fill the big boots left by Lovren !!

What a season, 10th Great , 9th awesome and 8th ???? Well that would be the icing on the cake, an unusual January but I think it could end up being a fundamental one for the future of Saints FC ....................

Finally hearing the Saints fans singing ' they are of to Brazil ' at the end of the game yesterday ...... stunning !

Loving it !!!!!!!!

I fully appreciate that the discovery of the Higgs boson; the clear indication that faster than light travel is indeed possible and the revelation that particles can be in many different places at the same time are all quite astonishing and difficult to comprehend. However Rickie's amazing pass to Jay Rod and his stunning goal was an even more astonishing occurrence to my mind.

Having Dani in the Squad affected SRL and put his nose out of Joint.

With Dani gone SRL had a memorable game and we will see him get back into TOP FORM.

It's great to have VW and Corkie as Options as they both bring different qualities to the Play. It is true that Corkie is playing out of his skin - yet Victor is very good at the beginning of a game to break up attacks when the opposition has more energy. At Wet Spam and against Stoke - both will be needed.

In the FA Cup - Sunderland Away is going to be a tough ask. NEED A GOOD AWAY SQUAD and the best players to get a RESULT.

WE ARE THE MIGHTY SOUTHAMPTON. COYR
