Pochettino would be "stupid" to quit Saints in wake of Cortese departure

Basingstoke Gazette: Mauricio Pochettino Mauricio Pochettino

MAURICIO Pochettino would be “stupid” to resign as Saints manager – either today or before the end of the current season.

That is the view of Saints fanzine editor Nick Illingsworth in the aftermath of chairman Nicola Cortese’s shock departure last night.

There has been widespread speculation Pochettino will now walk away too.

But Illingsworth said: “Why would he resign?

“I don’t think he will go. Why would he walk away from a good job.

“I don’t suppose he’s spoken to Katharina Liebherr yet, so why would he resign before he had done?

“Why would he cut off his nose to spite his face?

“Katharina might say to Pochettino ‘I am willing to put more money in now Cortese has left?’”

I would be very surprised if Poch didn't know this was coming, and will have had plenty of time to plan his next move. I wouldn't be surprised if he does leave

I can't believe that if Cortese's departure was planned 3 months ago, there aren't some plans in place at least for the rest of the season. It would be very difficult to find his successor at short notice, and it is vital that we make the right appointment in the long term

Not much any of us can do... another day sat looking at newsnow I suppose.

MP staying could save the club from a meltdown, if he goes we can guarantee the exodus we begin.
Do the right thing Mauricio.

There's a possibility that liebherr may sell up and hold a fire sale selling who she can right now to maximise profit. Sure we'll be taken over by Chairman with big pockets but it would have destroyed the last 5 years of progress, Shaw, lallana, ward-prowse, lambert, etc gone

It is not only Poch to consider but the back room staff he brought in would probably all go as well. it would decimate the club.

I think the owners bluff got called they thought Cortese would back down because of his love for the club,.

According to one report Cortese was offered 'insane' amounts of money to stay but felt that strongly he left. Though he tried to persuade MP to stay.

Why does the Echo give Illingsworth a platform? He's a pratt with a very inflated view of his own importance. He's basing this view on stuff he knows nothing about.

I hope Pochettino stays as he's done a cracking job so far, but there could be very good reasons for him to go.

If MoPo decides his position is untenable then the priority would be a first team coach Hoddle was willing to take Spurs to the end of the season Would he take Saints?

I doubt this will play out until the end of the season. Even if MP leaves which I doubt, I don't see why there would necessarily be an exodus straightaway - Shaw might go but he will eventually in any case. Longer term will depend on the new regime but I cant see why anyone new coming would not be attracted for the same reasons - i.e. massive potential and infrastructure for success to be self-sustaining. What MP does now will tell us a lot more an about what went on between KL and NC. If it was about milking cash then yes he will probably go.

MP is a great talent and has proved this despite our sadness at losing Nigel Adkins last season. I think he and Nicola have other plans together, as they must surely have discussed the resignation for some time. I am sure they will team up at some point, probably elsewhere in Europe and take their ethos to another club. What is so sad is that emerging home grown talent, looked to be the future of the club, rather than being sold, as in the past (except MLT of course ) and this seems to have been projected on to the whole of English football,( where foreign players are in large numbers ) as fans and pundits around the country talk about our team with admiration and hope ( for England to win a trophy after so long )
