Liebherr to replace Cortese as chairman - reports

Nicola Cortese

Nicola Cortese is set to quit St Mary’s in the coming days with Katharina Liebherr taking charge of the club, according to reports.

Katharina, daughter of the late Swiss billionaire Markus Liebherr whose takeover in 2009 rescued Saints from administration, is reportedly set to become the new chairman.

Manager Mauricio Pochettino, who stated in the summer that he would leave the club if Cortese went, is said to be considering quitting too.

As reported previously on dailyecho.co.uk, Cortese has been preparing to walk out after what a source close to the top at Saints told the Daily Echo was ‘irretrievable breakdown’ in relations with the Liebherr estate who own the club.

The reports this evening also stated that Cortese tendered his resignation some time ago - though speculation he had resigned today had been slapped down by officials - and has been serving out the remainder of his contract ever since.

However, the reports also suggest a degree of brinkmanship as they state a late change of heart from Liebherr’s could still stave this off.

The reason for the breakdown revolves around still largely unresolved issues from when Cortese almost went in the summer.

Back then an interim agreement was struck over the future of the club, and Cortese’s contract, which convinced both parties to agree a deal to keep the former Swiss banker at St Mary’s.

Discussions over a long term strategy for the club to replace the interim agreement have been ongoing but there appears to be some way between the two parties. That has prompted Cortese to again consider his future.

The Daily Echo understand that chief amongst the disagreements are the potential sale of the club and a desire for a representative of the Liebherr estate to take a seat on the board,

So Poch will go if Cortese goes? What the hell is going on all of a sudden? Everything looks rosy and suddenly there's a doom feeling again....is it because the Liebherr's won't cough up the money any more? If Poch goes I feel the slippery slope of relegation looming.....Noone said it was easy as a Saints fan...here we go again...hang onto your bobble hats.

Very odd that Katharina Liebherr taking over as CEO when reports suggest she is not interested in football. Can see some asset stripping here to help clear supposed debts.

Just watched BBC South news who announced that it is now imminent Nicola Cortese will leave and Katharina will replace him, does this mean Mauricio Potchettino will be with him? Someone from the Club needs to come out with a statement of the truth asap please.

This is disgraceful timing when half way through the season it's bringing total disruption to the Club, those mainly affected are the Players at every level within the Club if they think the man they have quickly taken too and respect Mauricio Potchettino could be leaving in the next 2 weeks or less, what utter turmoil, please tell me I'm in a dream, there's not any mention of any change on the Saints site so what's the truth?

You never know she may have seen the DVD and got hypnotised into believing the dream. My thanks to NC for everything that you did, no regrets, if things weren't working out, the sensible thing is to walk away with your head up. I bet he has been trying everything to avoid this mess, it would seem that he didn't confide in his management, not sure that was good or bad. It may give MP more reason to stay on as his loyalty may have taken a bit of a knock here.

Read the statement - she has taken over as Non-Executive Chairman not CEO and "A search has begun for a Chief Executive Officer who will take over Mr Cortese's executive duties".
