WHITCHURCH United warmed up for tomorrow’s Wessex League Cup semi-final against Petersfield Town with a 3-0 victory over Downton on Saturday.
The hosts made a good start, with Luke Walker twice forcing decent saves out of the Downton goalkeeper in the early stages, but neither side was able to find a goal before the half-time whistle.
Whitchurch manager Jim Macey made his first substitution early in the second half, bringing on former Basingstoke Town striker Joe Harris. He had an almost immediate impact, slipping the ball to Walker and while his shot was parried, Shane Lock was on hand to fire home the rebound.
Walker doubled the lead before Harris set up Lock for his second of the afternoon to complete the scoring.
The result left Whitchurch sixth in the Wessex Premier table but they will switch their attentions to the league cup tomorrow night, when they take on Division One outfit Petersfield Town in a semi-final at Alresford.
Tadley Calleva’s Division One game against East Cowes Victoria was postponed due to a waterlogged pitch at Barlow’s Park on Saturday. They are without a game this weekend.
