Summary

  • FT 4-3
  • Adam Lallana deflected attention from the Mark Clattenburg saga with an excellent winning goal from the edge of the area.
  • Rickie Lambert and Nathaniel Clyne gave Saints a 2-0 half-time lead.
  • But Burnley's Southampton-born Saints rejects, Sam Vokes and Danny Ings, restored parity before Jay Rodriguez netted against his old club.
  • Lallana ensured that Kevin Long's 87th-minute goal was a consolation.

4:55pm

FT 4-3. Saints are in the hat but it wasn't nearly as straightforward as it might have been following that comfortable  first half.

4:52pm

4 minutes' injury time announced as JRod curls one beyond the top corner

4:50pm

Vokes scuffs his shot at Davis following Ings' pass

4:48pm

4-3. Kevin Long's close range  effort from Stanislas's corner has ensured a nervy lat few minutes...

4:46pm

Ings gets the better of Shaw and his cross-shot is tipped behind by Davis

4:43pm

Rodriguez fires across goal but his shot is deflected beyond the far post for a corner, which Fonte heads over the bar

4:39pm

Saints' third and final substitution: Fonte on for Hooiveld

4:38pm

Basingstoke Gazette:

Davis saves at the feet of  Ings as Burley try to get back into this game, having done so well to liven this game up with their second-half response.

4:35pm

Basingstoke Gazette:

4-2. Who else but Adam Lallana has surely sealed Saints' place in the fourth round with a venomous low shot inside Heaton's left-hand post from 20 yards.

4:33pm

Danny Ings goes close to another with a snap shot that comes back of the outside of the right-hand post.

4:28pm

Basingstoke Gazette:

3-2. Rodriguez has restored Saints' lead, slamming one past his old club with his instep. His celebration is predictably subdued. Relief all round, let's hope there's no equaliser this time. It's been a terrific second half so far.

4:26pm

The crowd today is just 15,077

4:23pm

Rodriguez cuts in from the left but fires straight at Heaton.

4:20pm

Brilliant save by Kelvin Davis, low to his right, denies Sam Vokes. Saints all over the place at the back.

4:19pm

Basingstoke Gazette:

2-2. Danny Ings, the other half of Burnley's Southampton-born strike partnership, has fired a brilliant equaliser from a tight angle. He showed pace and the sort of clinical finishing that has now got him 20 goals this season.

4:17pm

Basingstoke Gazette:

Davis puts Ramirez away but his cross is turned away by Heaton before Rodriguez fires powerfully at Burnley's custodian

4:14pm

Basingstoke Gazette:

2-1. Sam Vokes, the Southampton-born Saints reject who grew up supporting the club, has headed Burnley back into this game. There were pockets of celebrations in the St Mary's stands, where many of his family and friends are sat, when he found the far corner following Dean Marney's cross.

3:50pm

HT 2-0. Very comfortable for Saints. A nondescript game lit up by two classy strikes from Clyne and Lambert.

3:44pm

Basingstoke Gazette:

Excellent work from Davis. After escaping a clutch of defenders with a Cruyff turn he put Luke Shaw away down the left. The left-back's fierce shot was blocked by Heaton at the near post.

3:42pm

Steve Davis slips in the penalty area attempting to collect a slide-rule pass from Ramirez, a move that ends with Clyne shooting well wide as he attempted to score his second of the afternoon.

3:38pm

Rickie Lambert limps off to be replaced by former Burnley star Jay Rodriguez

3:36pm

Kieran Trippier fired a direct free kick low into the Saints' wall

3:32pm

Basingstoke Gazette:

2-0! Rickie Lambert has found the same top corner from the other side of the 'D', another top-notch goal that has put Saints in control of this contest.

3:26pm

Basingstoke Gazette: Stunning strike from Nathaniel Clyne, his second Saints goal. After chesting the ball down on the right-hand edge of the penalty area from Davis's pass he smashed a half-volley into the top right corner.  Pick. That. Out. Saints 1 Burnley 0

3:19pm

Kelvin Davis plucks Danny Ings' header from under his crossbar

3:16pm

Ramirez shoots high and wide...this game needs a goal

3:15pm

Sam Vokes's shot is blocked by Yoshida

3:13pm

Clyne's cross is deflected into the arms of Heaton.

3:10pm

Gaston Ramirez's tame shot is comfortably saved by Tom Heaton. Torrential rain here at St Mary's.

3:05pm

Scott Arfield goes close for Burnley, curling a 25-yard effort narrowly wide of the far, top corner of Kelvin Davis's goal

2:58pm

The teams are out on the pitch

2:57pm

It's still wet at St Mary's...plenty more rain to come

Danny Ings can fire himself into the England squad and Burnley back to the Premier League, according to former team-mate Jay Rodriguez.

Southampton striker Rodriguez is hoping to put one over hometown club Burnley in FA Cup third round action at St Mary's Stadium on Saturday.

But while the 24-year-old wants to dump his old club out of the competition, England man Rodriguez still wants them to join Saints in the Premier League.

Persistent ankle problems ruled Rodriguez out of Premier League action with Burnley in 2009/10, and he hopes the second-placed Championship side can win promotion to face Southampton in league action next term.

"They deserve to be there and I just hope they can stay there," said Rodriguez.

"It was frustrating seeing the Premier League come to Turf Moor and not be able to play but I think it improved me physically because when I was out I did a lot of gym work."

Free-scoring Ings has blasted 19 goals in 27 games for Burnley so far this term, and Rodriguez believes the England Under-21 striker will progress to full international status in time.

Ings was released by Southampton as a schoolboy before breaking through at Bournemouth to make his name and earn a move north.

Rodriguez has headed the other way, after impressing at his hometown club and now winding up on the south coast.

Whatever their differing routes, Rodriguez hopes the pair end up in the same place: Roy Hodgson's England squad.

Backing Ings to win full international honours, he said: "I don't see why not, he's a great player with a great future.

"Unfortunately he picked up a bad injury when I was there but when he came back he was a great player and it's no surprise he's scoring goals for fun.

"He's a great talent and a good lad as well so there'll be a lot of interest in him [during the January transfer window].

"But I'm sure Burnley will be able to keep hold of him and do well this year."

2:23pm

Southampton assistant manager Jesus Perez believes the acclaim afforded to success in the FA Cup is still the envy of Europe.

Aston Villa manager Paul Lambert has glumly conceded that modern players value money and big contracts more than cup glory.

The pragmatic Scot also unashamedly admitted he prizes Premier League points over cup victories without second thought.

Saints' Spanish number-two does not believe the knockout competition has lost any of its lustre, though.

Southampton host second-paced Championship club Burnley at St Mary's in Saturday's FA Cup third round tie.

And former Espanyol and Rayo Vallecano coach Perez is adamant no other European domestic cup is revered in quite the same way as the FA Cup.

"If you do well in the FA Cup then you gain big respect from supporters, other clubs and the media," said Perez.

"It's completely different in this case from Italy, Spain and other countries we know well."

Confident that he and manager Mauricio Pochettino have found the Premier League's measure, Perez said the world's oldest knockout competition still retains an unrivalled aura.

"I agree it's the most exciting cup competition there is," he said.

"You have to respect this competition, it's the tradition in England, and it's a little bit different from the other cups.

"In terms of the games, when you play the fans are expecting to see this type of game.

"There's something special about this competition, we've got full respect for it.

"We understand the Premier League and the way you have to play.

"The club helps us to make an easy job of it, especially in the daily task.

"So we have everyone helping us try to do a nice job over here."

Southampton lifted the FA Cup with a 1-0 victory over Manchester United at Wembley in 1976.

Perez insists he and Pochettino are well aware of Saints' decorated cup history, but are not dreaming of a repeat quite yet.

Expecting a stern test from Burnley on Saturday, he said: "We are thinking to play to win this game.

"The Premier League is a long competition, but in the cup everything is possible.

"They won one time and one final as well, we are aware of that.

"You never know, in the cup, because it's special, you play with a different pressure.

"You're not thinking about the table, you're not thinking about getting one point here and three there, it's just a case.

"Both sides play with a different mindset, and that's what makes it exciting."

That's five changes for Saints with Maya Yoshida, Jos Hooiveld, Nathaniel Clyne, James Ward-Prowse and Rickie Lambert coming back into the side.

Jose Fonte, Dejan Lovren, Calum Chambers, Adam Lallana and Jay Rodriguez drop out.

Lallana is amongst the subs, along with Rodriguez against his old club, in what is probably a stronger Saints team than many anticipated.

2:04pm

TEAMS

SAINTS: K Davis, Clyne, Yoshida, Hooiveld, Shaw, Cork, Schneiderlin, S Davis, Ward-Prowse, Ramírez, Lambert.

Subs: Gazzaniga, Fonte, Chambers, Reed, Rodriguez, Lallana, Gallagher.

BURNLEY: Heaton, Trippier, Lafferty, Shackell, Long, Treacy, Marney, Arfield, Jones, Ings, Vokes.

Subs: Cisak, Stock, O'Neill, Edgar, Stanislas, Hewitt, Dummigan.

Ref: Robert Madley

1:53pm

We are expecting to get the teams in about ten minutes.

We will bring them to you as soon as we have them.

1:53pm

There is also a lot of talk about Adam Lallana, who may be removed from the firing line after the blaze of publicity that has surrounded Saints’ complaint regarding Mark Clattenburg.

1:47pm

One player definitely not available for Saints is Dani Osvaldo after he picked up a three game ban for violent conduct at Newcastle.

1:46pm

Hello and welcome to the Daily Echo’s live coverage of this afternoon’s FA Cup third round tie against Burnley at St Mary’s.

Mauricio Pochettino is expected to field a fairly youthful side for the game against the side who are second in the Championship.

Southampton born strikers Danny Ings and Sam Vokes could feature for Burnley while Jay Rodriguez will be hoping for a chance against the side who brought him through and sold him to Saints for £7m.

I say go for it; a win is a win is a win is a win. These days, Saints are highly unlikely to win the league, so we should focus on being a top-7 side, and winning a cup every couple of years to get into Europe. Then, once we've had a taste of success and developed the squad & fanbase, get the capacity of St Mary's increased so we can start competing a bit higher.

On another note, anyone know where to get the full transcript of what Clattenburg said? There must be more to it than just the "you've changed" quote, but news on Saints is a bit sparse over here.

Anyway, anybody have a link for the game? It's not on TV out here.

So it's a 'win-win' then Tony.

Re: the big debate, I don't think anyone has seen the full Clutt script.

Go to Newsnow.co.uk/sport/
football/Southampton and you'll find out as much as the rest of us.

IMO, the whole thing revolves around two points:
1. Saints not wanting Clutt to ref our games and NC using all available legal channels to make this happen.
2. To achieve point 1, making a lot out of what Clutt is known to have said, which is rightly perseived as being 'unprofessional' because he offered an opinion on Adam's character, and that's not his job.

Anyway, let's focus on today and get that win, win, win, win you mention.

Strong side, so no complacency.

Anyone got any live feeds?

This is a classic really tricky game for us. Remember when we were around the top of the championship and the attitude we had in games like this. For Burnley they've absolutely nothing to lose, for our lot given the recent run of results this amounts to more than an ordinary cup-tie.
Burnley appear to have a strong team out so they intend going for it. We are going to have to play well, especially defensively.

An interesting line-up for us. Still does not give us an inside look into the thinking of MP in a cup run, other than he seems to be taking this a little more seriously. How this fits in to the big picture is still not clear, but perhaps the week off regular fixtures giving players time to rest factors in to this selection. Time for Ricky to step up with a header and a great free kick.

There is little difference between the top of the C/ship and the lower Prem. This won't be an easy game and we certainly won't embarrass them like we did against Hull and Fulham. Just hope we don't lose any regulars to injury as we don't want to be losing any more players in a competition we have little chance of winning.

Ricky needs agoal like all strikers need goals.
They don't care if it goes in off their backside, a goal is a goal, whatever competition.
But the F.A.Cup is improtant.
And that was quite a good goal.
And now he has gone down, and he doesn't go down easy and has to go off.
D a m n.
But Jayrod gets some game time against a club he wants to play well in front of.

As I was just saying. I think this team might easily embarrass Burnley in the same was as we did against Hull and Fulham. We have every chance of winning the cup this year. Hee hee.

As I was just saying. I think this team might easily embarrass Burnley in the same was as we did against Hull and Fulham. We have every chance of winning the cup this year. Hee hee.
To be fair, I did think your original post was nonsense. You were right about injuries though :-(
What do you mean? My original post was spot on. Please ignore my original response to my original post. And now SRL has picked up an injury as well. Let's hope they don't decide to nobble JRod.
Given that we are ahead again I am currently considering whether or not to retract my response to my original change of mind. My original statement would appear currently to be incorrect and my original change of mind may well prove to be spot on. Now it appears that Adam has put us 4-2 ahead I'm pretty sure that this is going to be the case. I'll let you all know later so that I don't cause any sleepless nights .
Sort yourself out CD. We've enough blood pressure out and about the world without you ....... and now it's 4-3!!! I blame Jos for being subbed!

Today's game has confirmed all that we know about the SAINTS.

WE HAVE QUALITY WITH ADAM RICKIE AND JROD.

Our Defensive Team with Hoover Yoahida and having Kelvin in goal leak goals like sieves. We keep leaking 3 at home. We have major problems at the back.

We would be better off with INGS than have Osvaldo and Gaston on our books - for all their millions they have delivered so little.

WE SHOULD HAVE DONE A LOT BETTER AGAINST CHELSEA - AND THE GAME HIGHLIGHTED THE PROBLEMS. WE WERE AT HOME.

Surely the Manager can see what we can.

A WIN FOR THE MIGHTY SOUTHAMPTON TODAY. COYR

Great to be in the draw but good god our defense is a bloody shambles AGAIN.

Jos so likes us but is so out of his depth..horrible when that happens...no winners.

KD as good or as bad as we can hope at this stage of his career again massive loyalty but performance is everything it's a shame we do not have the luxury of letting players see out their careers because of our lack of overall depth.

We need to keep Fonte as cover but another Lovren is more than essential..

Lallana star and certainly the most cultured English midfield player today.

Jay Rod he is getting better..Lambert wonderful servant but feel he too is slightly beyond his best for us full time..

If we are to move on 4 positions have to be taken to top four quality level...hmmm...can you lend me 50 francs Strassie?

job done. that's all that matters.

I shall leave it to Poch to talk over the defensive issues with the players concerned. I thought that the team overall played well apart from those few defensive wobbles (which, frankly, we should expect from hoover and maya until they get a grip - but they STILL aren't as bad as Fox)

excellent to see Clyne get himself a goal as well - that will do wonders for his confidence.

to be honest it wasn't half of our reserves out there. mostly 1st team players and a couple of bench warmers who are part of the senior squad were out there. it got to the point where we had to bring our best 3 to save the game. it was far from comfortable. a few players that played last night aren't good enough for the 1st team and sadly to say, i dont think they belong in the squad.

i know for a fact if we had a better CB available, MP will not play Jos. we dont really have much back up hence why hes given the cup games. nobody is slagging off the management , they are doing terrific but its quite clear who are the weakest link in the team and if we can see it im sure MP can.

Kelv in goal, second choice. Jos and yoshi both second choice. Cork second or third choice. Ramirez second choice. JWP or s Davis, with a fully fit team they don't both start. Thats 6 non first team starters or half the team of reserves. Whilst I will admit that some do start some games, they don't when we are fully fit. Yes again some did start last season but we have improved since then and changed the style of play. I didn't say we had a weak team, intact part from the centre backs we had a strong team out. Also J-rod wasn't brought on to 'save the game' he was brought on in the first half, when we were 2-0 up and looking good, to replace an injured SRL, who if you look through the earlier posts I said shouldn't have started Incase he did get injured.
