Saints given green light to sign Italian international Davide Astori

Basingstoke Gazette: Davide Astori Davide Astori

SAINTS have been given the green light to sign an Italian international colleague of Dani Osvaldo.

The club have previously shown interest in signing Cagliari centre half Davide Astori.

Boss Mauricio Pochettino shot down that rumour when asked about Astori back in November But now, as the transfer window re-opens tomorrow, Saints have been told to make an approach for the 26-year-old by Cagliari’s president.

The lack of real quality in depth in Saints’ central defence has been exposed in recent weeks following spells out of the side for first choices Dejan Lovren and Jose Fonte.

Jos Hooiveld has made a couple of high profile mistakes, leading to goals at Newcastle and at home to Tottenham - the latter ending up with his fourth Premier League own goal.

And Maya Yoshida also failed to make the most of his chance when he played in the 3-2 home loss to Aston Villa at the beginning of last month.

Indeed, Saints have not lost at home this season when Fonte and Lovren have lined up together.

Astori, 26, has been a regular for mid-table Cagliari in Serie A this season.

Cagliari president Massimo Cellino recently announced that star players such as Astori – and also Radja Nainggolan, who was also linked with Saints in 2012 – can leave.

Both players have been repeatedly linked with moves away from the Sardinian club.

Cellino is angry that Cagliari have been forced to keep large sections of their stadium closed because of ongoing safety issues.

“All the players are free to go; what the **** are they still doing in this lousy stadium,” he said before Christmas. “We play in a stadium worthy of Serie C.

“[Will Nainggolan leave in January?] No, he can leave in December, I tell you. He has six or seven clubs looking for him and I can’t keep hold of him again.

“It’s not an issue of money, as even if they give me less than his price tag, he’ll still go. If he doesn’t want to go, I’ll send him away.

“[Does that apply to Astori too?] It applies to everyone. I don’t rule anybody out.

“Anyone who wants to leave Cagliari is free to do so.”

Sounds like he said this in a moment of frustration. When it comes to it, I'm sure he'll fight for top dollar, or to keep him.

If SRL is to go, surely he won't be allowed to do so until we have a replacement in situ?
Would be the saving of the Hoofers, but we would miss his goals (6) and assists (5), so far, for the second half of the season.
NC needs to weigh up the £8m being talked about (not a bad fee for his age), against the potential drop in prize money, if we slip a few places down the league.

Sounds to me like Cagliari are up Pompey Creek without a paddle - hence the need to sell their best players.

If the rumours have been true about Astori and Naingollan, then we may well see some action in the transfer market after all. While we will have a Transfer Budget in place, I'm sure that Cortese - being so heavily involved in transfers - would be prepared to negotiate.

I hope today s result will convince the powers that be at Saints that they need a bigger squad , the Saints team looked decidedly jaded in the second half. Ramirez had a good game but was somewhat isolated. Lallana had one of his poorest..Saints are short in several positions and anyone who thinks that the Saints squad is competitive is seriously dreaming.

Agree with montechristo, our squad is not as big/good as the other 8 teams above us. Our starting 11 can be a match for any side, but take a few links out and we really can't compete, we run out of ideas, especially in the second half of games. If NC can broker a deal for any quality signing he will, he like all of us, loves a deal. We need to either bring through our youngsters, on the wide positions especially,or sign just 1 or 2 quality signings then we can start fighting again. I thought Lallana looked tired second half, gaston was really trying but not much was coming off for him. Which brings me onto our lack of a goal poacher!

In the first half against Chelsea when Shaw was on the field he was never in place when Chelsea attacked down their right-wing, he was somewhere up-field. When Shaw goes up he is too slow in getting back to defend, and so one of the inside defensive players or the mid-field players has to cover his vacant position. He was the cause of Everton's first goal where Coleman had a free run down the right until an ineffective challenge by Ward-Prowse. I think Shaw wants to be a Bale but he is nowhere in that class yet. Bale when playing as left back always got back to defend. If we can get 20 million pounds for him we should take it and get someone who is the finished article as a left back defensive player.
