Saints fall to Tottenham defeat

Basingstoke Gazette: Saints fall to Tottenham defeat Saints fall to Tottenham defeat

Saints couldn't sign off for Christmas with a win as a 3-2 home defeat to Tottenham made it two points from the last possible 18 in the top flight.

Spurs forgotten man Emmanuel Adebayor's road to redemption continued apace, netting a brace in a for his side that will only boost Tim Sherwood's chances of keeping the Tottenham job permanently.

For Mauricio Pochettino it is back to more work on the training ground for what is now a vital festive schedule if Saints are to keep their hopes of European football alive.

Coming into the game much of the focus had been on the away team. It has been quite the chaotic week, with a humiliating 5-0 home defeat to Liverpool last Sunday resulting in Andre Villas-Boas being shown the door less than 24 hours later.

Sherwood, Tottenham's head of football development, was handed the role of interim manager in the aftermath of that dismissal. Having seen Spurs crash out of the Capital One Cup at the hands of West Ham in midweek, on Sunday he oversaw a thrilling, Adebayor-inspired 3-2 win at St Mary's.

Cast aside by Villas-Boas, the Togo striker has started both matches under Sherwood and netted a brace to add to his strike in the midweek loss to the Hammers.

Adebayor struck a superb volley to put Tottenham level midway through the first half, cancelling out a fine effort from the edge of the box by Saints captain Adam Lallana.

Tottenham dominated from that point onwards and deservedly went ahead early in the second half as a Danny Rose cross was turned home by Jos Hooiveld - his fourth own goal since the start of last season.

Saints levelled as Rickie Lambert made the most of Tottenham goalkeeper Hugo Lloris' dash off the line to net into an empty goal, but Spurs were not to be denied for long.

Not so long ago the hosts had the best defensive record in the league but injuries have taken their toll, with Adebayor taking full advantage of the makeshift backline to fire home from close range.

It proved to the be decisive goal but it could have been worse for Southampton, who have now gone six matches without a win under reported Tottenham target Mauricio Pochettino.

This was a match between two of Glenn Hoddle's former clubs and the ex-England boss, working as a television pundit for the encounter, confirmed in the build-up his interest in regaining the White Hart Lane hotseat.

Hoddle is second favourite with bookmakers for the job behind interim boss Sherwood, who made four alterations after the defeat to West Ham but stuck with a 4-4-2 formation.

Counterpart Pochettino made three changes and his injury-hit side had the first chance of the afternoon inside three minutes, with a long-range Lambert free-kick beating the wall but not Lloris.

The next strike on Tottenham's goal, though, was too good for the Frenchman.

Danny Fox burst forward and fed Lallana, who turned Vlad Chiriches on the edge of the box before firing a low strike into the bottom corner.

A wayward attempt from Gylfi Sigurdsson was the only shot Tottenham mustered in the opening 20 minutes and perhaps led to Sherwood's decision to swap his vantage point in the directors' box for the technical area.

The interim manager was somewhat fortunate not to see his side go further behind soon after he made it pitchside as Southampton's England trio linked up superbly.

Lambert was allowed time to cut the ball across for Lallana, whose fine touch played through Jay Rodriguez, although he was unable to direct his effort on target.

It was a missed opportunity Saints were made to rue in the 25th minute as rejuvenated Adebayor struck home, with Roberto Soldado keeping his wayward pass in and swinging over a cross which the striker turned home with a superb hooked volley.

Spurs ended the half in the ascendancy and continued in the same manner when play resumed, although injury meant Mousa Dembele soon had to be replaced by 19-year-old debutant Nabil Bentaleb.

Despite the enforced alteration, the visitors remained on top and it was no surprise when they went ahead in the 54th minute.

Christian Eriksen played through Rose, whose low cross from the left was directed home by Hooiveld.

It was a comical own goal that had the 3,173 away fans in fine voice - if only for five minutes.

Jack Cork played a defence-splitting pass through to Lallana and, with Lloris having rushed off his line, the Saints captain squared for Lambert to put into the empty net.

After doing well to prevent Adebayor putting Spurs back ahead, Paulo Gazzaniga was soon beaten by the former Arsenal striker after calamitous defending from a quick throw-in allowed him to strike home.

Further chances followed for Spurs as firstly Soldado burst clear on goal and somehow put wide, before then meeting a fine cross from the right but hitting a six-yard strike into the ground and over.

I was pig sick after the Villa game and I feel worse today (missus supports Spuds). How can we lose 2 in a row at home, both 2-3 and both times to opponents who only had 3 shots on target for Christ's sake! Once is a freak occurrence but twice indicates something more sinister.

The forward line are doing their jobs but it's quite clear that 2 or 3 of our defensive players (who will remain nameless) are NOT Premier League class. It's not their fault though and merely illustrates how quickly we've progressed. Being brutally honest, there's no way I can see them being at the club in 12 months time so there's no point laying into them.

January and this summer will be all about keeping hold of what we've got, shipping out the weak links and strengthening our overall defensive offering. I don't think we're a good fit for Ramirez and he should go too.

Granted, we're pretty much where I thought we'd be, and our recent woes have been mainly caused by injury to key players, but the problem now is that we have no momentum whatsoever. This can be like a disease and we now HAVE to win on Boxing Day if we're serious about having a top half finish (and keeping our best players in the summer).

Plenty for MoPo to contemplate but, unless key players come back soon, I fear it could get worse before it gets better.

Not the happiest Christmas but at least we're not floating at the bottom of League 2 like the excrement to the east.

what bothers me is this insistance that Saints can solve their shortcomings whithin the squad they have , they clearly cant. Hooveld,Fox and Gazzaniga are frankly not good enough at this level and if they play we lose simple as that. I am also concerned about the Ramirez situation. He is a talented player, and noone is going to tell me he is not worth a spot in the team. Davis is simply not at the same level and when we are playing at home Ramirez should always be preferred. Worse as I know quite a bit about the latin temperament I wonder how much of Ramirez relegation to the bench is due to some spat with MoPo when latins get the hump its diffiult to get them to be reasonable. Cortese needs to step in and deal with this situation and quickly. And he needs to get his cheque book out no matter what MoPo says.Otherwise we could yet be fighting relegation.

I don't comment much these days but that game has hurt more than any other this season. When are we going to cut out the mistakes which lead to giving away stupid goals. I'm confident that three quarters of the goals conceeded this season have been of our own making rather than the opponents creativity.

Two huge problems IMO today. No options going forward on the left in the absence of Shaw. He's twice the player Fox is.
And as for Gazzaniga... shocking! He needs to be gone in January. Everybody knows it too which is why all three stands got on his back in the second half when he should've come out to claim the ball in front of Adebayor. He got lucky with the save but it never should have come to that. He's a poor excuse for a keeper.

As soon as I saw the line up of Hooveld and Fox I thought we are going to head for another bad result. Up to now MP has come away with no criticism but his constant tinkering around has upset the balance of play. Yes we have had our injuries to players which has not helped but he has made it worse by dropping Fonte who had an excellent partnership with Lovren. Gazzaniga needs first team experience away from Saints perhaps in the championship, but it’s not his fault all the other keepers are injured. We are rapidly heading for mid table obscurity!

Gazzaniga needs first team experience away from Saints perhaps in the championship, but it’s not his fault all the other keepers are injured. We are rapidly heading for mid table obscurity!

I'm no football manager, but even I could see that if injuries have left us with only 1 first choice defender then taking off the only midfielder who was doing a good defensive job was a mistake.

Poch took off Cork and within seconds Adebayor ran straight into where he had been covering and scored.

We may have needed to attack at that point, but there were other plavers who could have gone off who would have made no difference to the game at all (Danny, Gaza, Jay and Hoover to name 4). Then to bring on Gaston, who is fast becoming the exact opposite of an impact sub.....it just made you shake your head in disbelief.

It will get better I'm sure, but this was definitely one of our more uninspiring games all round.

COYR

Still, Calum and Adm can hold their heads high tonight. I hope this game doesn't make them think about their futures come January.

Have to disagree there. Cork had a good game and I was disappointed he was taken off. He broke up spuds attack in midfield three times in the space of a couple of minutes at the beginning of the second half just before they scored to take the lead.

Saints have had a very rude awakening after the last few games. Injuries yes, but the biggest worry is that it seems strengthening the squad in January is on the back burner.

I was getting quite excited until suddenly the definition of pear shape was clarified and we were shown just what has happened to our season. From almost no goals conceded the goalkeeper is complaining of backache from bending too much getting the ball from the back of the net.

I didn't want to say it yesterday but teams who change their manager have a good record at stuffing the Saints, and it made me nervous this time as well. On top of that having seen how dreadful Spurs were against Arsenal and then, hells bells, losing at home to the Hammers, it was obvious we were going to be in trouble today.

But, the season is not over and I am quite happy to know that Saints will get 41+ points and finish above 17th. Another "BUT" to all unrealistic optimists is that this team, without any new blood has absolutely NO chance of a top 4 finish. You all know that is the case, so can we just concentrate on finishing an excellent start with just a steady finish. That will make me happy anyway.

Let's concentrate on this and it would be nice to stop slagging off that lot along the M27 - it is also so tiresome being rude to them. They are awful and in a dreadful situation and I think it is best just to forget them.

Having said all this, it is still UP THE SAINTS, always the top team for me and that's after 52 years of cheering and crying as well, quite often - including today. Soddit!

You are mainly right . The scunts are in an awful state and in a pretty dreadful position. However, no matter if we have a few bad results it's always reassuring to know they will appear in numbers and we will be able to cheer ourselves up by laughing at their inane comments and low levels of intelligence. This is of course caused by continual inbreeding which obviously is irreversible, so this situation will never change. Fortunately we all know that they would all swap our position for theirs if they possibly could, anything else
they spout on about is simply clutching at straws.

Trolls and moaners out in force it would seem.

This just goes to show that, as we all knew, we lack depth in our squad, especially at the back. When you've got Boruc, Shaw and Fonte out with knocks it's going to show unfortunately.

It was pretty obvious that we weren't getting down that left flank as much as we usually do when Shaw's out there. Still, credit to Fox, he did set up the first goal. The big problem is when you have both Hoover and Fox on that same side, it's was just a disaster waiting to happen, like it did last season.

Once this injury crisis is over and we sign a quality CB in Jan we'll get back on track, that I'm sure of. The doomers/Scummers going on about us going down make me laugh. We're on a bad run, but despite that we're still in the top ten. Losing by a single goal against Spurs with a injury hit team doesn't exactly make us look like relegation candidates.

However I'd also like to take my share of blame for this latest defeat. So far this season, every time I've gone down to the local pub to watch Saints on telly (instead of streaming it) we've failed to win: the bore draw against Wet Spam at the start of the season, the Ars and Chelski games plus this one to name a few...

To end on a positive note, Lallana, Chambers, Lovren and Cork looked very good. Lambo, JRod and Spider as well, as did Gallagher (should have scored ^^) and Ramirez (yes Ramirez, almost played in Lallana with a lovely ball at the end) when they came on.

Three points at the next game please! STID

The truth 3000
Is there any need to put that horrible comment, cannot believe you are a Saints Fan, if your that brave put it in English then it wouldn't get printed and please grow up, incidentally it's Vano (vain) Veto is in the body a Vein, to all true Saints Fans the interpretation is a mother _ _ c_ _ r absolutely disgusting

Have all us the supporters been lead into a false sense of security, a wonderful start for 5/6 Games? So disappointing , 18 points dropped over these Games give or takeaway half making 32 it could be nobody would be complaining especially as another 10 out of 12 would secure another season in the Premiership, there's wounds to heal and it's hurting everyone, it's not a Manager and the Team who's become bad it's a Team that has to heal, a Team without injuries play a crucial part in winning because they Gel so the Team is disrupted, my mate saw the Game and agrees with many that Gazza is not good enough he is out of his depth, I noticed and saw that against Man City, Fox and Jos also looked the same, Jos has been responsible for 4 own Goals this season, I'm going to Everton Sunday and they are doing very well so lets hope I won't of wasted my money and Saints get 3 points but it's goiing to be very difficult that's for sure COYR

I hate to be all negative, but I honestly think that was the result that ends our push for a top six finish, possibly even top 8. The league is getting to that point where it splits up into thirds, and we look to be settling into the middle third. I can see us finishing somewhere between 8th and 12th now. We had to win this one to stay in touch of the top pack. Oh well, I guess pre-season we'd have taken a mid-table finish.

As for this game, it was an abject performance. Apart from Lallana, who worked his socks off as usual, it was pretty poor. Schneiderlin had a few wayward passes and poor touches. Cork was just so-so. Rodriguez couldn't get his game going (should have run at their defense – Spurs centre-backs are not the fastest), Lovren was okay but what was that 40-yard effort towards the end?, Chambers had his moments and was one of the stronger ones, but Fox, Hooieveld and Gazzaniga were woeful. It was no coincidence all three were involved in the first goal, and then Jos and Gazza for the second. As soon as Spurs worked out the weak link they took full advantage. It was the worst defensive performance I've seen from Saints this season and wasted what were two truly excellent goals at the other end.

Very disappointed with the way things are at the moment. I know we've got injuries that have prevented us from reaching our full potential, but we should still be doing better than this. We're in relegation form right now. No, I'm not saying we are going to get relegated, only that our form of late is that of a bottom-third team. It needs to be fixed. I hope they strengthen in January despite what they've been saying. We need a keeper who can actually make a save and command his box, and to get rid of Jos and Fox who are Championship quality at best.

Not always, but I am getting older and slower, I don't recommend it! However I try to avoid stating the obvious.
