Poch backs young keeper

Basingstoke Gazette: Paulo Gazzaniga Paulo Gazzaniga

Paulo Gazzaniga is set to start in goal for the first time in over a year tonight, with Mauricio Pochettino saying he has “full confidence” in his young keeper.

Artur Boruc’s broken hand and an injury to club captain Kelvin Davis means that the 21-year-old will represent Saints’ last line of defence against Aston Villa, at St Mary’s.

Gazzaniga has not started a match since December 1 last year, when he played in a 1-0 defeat at Liverpool.

After a series of mistakes, he was dropped by then-manager Nigel Adkins, but his latest boss says the Argentine stopper has shown significant improvement since that time.

“We do think that he’s a better goalkeeper, that he’s progressed, that he’s learnt a lot,” said Pochettino.

“He’s still very young, but, as is always the case, you can learn a lot from making mistakes and that, I think, has been his case.

“We’re very happy with his progress, with the work that he’s put in, the way that he’s matured as a goalkeeper.”

Pochettino added: “We have full confidence in Paulo Gazzaniga.

“We’re really happy with his work that he’s been doing, that he’s been doing ever since I arrived at the club.”

Boruc injured his hand in the 3-1 defeat at Chelsea on Sunday, colliding with a post during the build-up to the Blues’ equaliser.

He was taken to hospital after the game for x-rays, with scans revealing a break.

“Artur has an injury in his hand and it’s difficult to know right now exactly how many weeks he is going to be out, but we do know he is going to be out for some weeks,” said Pochettino.

Saints’ goalkeeping problems have been exacerbated by a glute injury suffered by Kelvin Davis in the lead-up to the match at Arsenal last month.

“Kelvin suffered a knock before the Arsenal game and that has not allowed him to train properly,” said Pochettino.

“He’s following a treatment as well that’s not allowing him to train properly, and that’s his problem.

“It’s hard to know when he’s going to be back to training, to be back to being fit.”

Pochettino did indicate, however, that he did not expect Davis to be a long-term absentee.

With Gazzaniga set to start, 20-year-old American keeper Cody Cropper is likely to be on the bench this evening.

Whatever people feel about getting a new keeper etc, Gazza this is your chance and you know you have to take it! You are not paid to warm the bench, you are paid to be a prem keeper... Time to step up to the plate my son and prove to us all you can do it! Personally, I do feel we need a little more depth in the squad if we are to maintain a position in the top 7 or push for 5th

Unusual that Kelvin picked up the same injury that affected Lambo in the England build up, he must be feeling gutted that a chance to play has been wrecked, Gazza has been with the 1st team even when not on the bench and has been learning from the other two, I am confident that he will do a good job and I am sure our defence will be giving all of their support, as should we.

I suppose he sees Kelvin as a safer pair of hands (excuse the pun) in that he's a got all the experience in the world and a steady head on his shoulders. So although Kelvin may not be as acrobatic as Gazza it makes sense to stick on the bench because you know exactly what you'll get.

But Gazza has the potential to be pretty amazing and Artur isn't going to be around forever, so this is a great chance for him to stake a claim to the No 1 shirt. Sometimes it takes keepers a little while to settle in - De Gea for example used to be awful and now he's one of the best in the league - so let's back him all the way.

I'm trying to keep my mind occupied with other issues until at least 7pm - for example, wondering why nearly every performer in Britain - Scotties, Geordies, Brummies, Yorkies, Scousers, Welsh etc - all sing with an American accent.

Probably because KD is the Club Captain and they wanted his influence on the day, there isn't a lot between them, KD has a bit more experience and that counts.

I'm full of confidence- he only made the one mistake (if i am correct?) against norwich, Boruc has made 2, with a more solid defence in front of him. Time for this young chap to be given a chance. If you believe in good omens he started against aston villa at home last time round- we won that time 4-1.

I'm not at all worried about the injuries we have- gives people like cork a chance to come in- will in the long run improve competition.

Would like to see Gaston start tonight behind Osvaldo.

We were always going to loose away to arsenal and chelsea- I expect to get points from them at home however, we could go back up to 5th tonight! I would have taken that at the start of the season.

I think we do need to have a game where Osvaldo and Gaston for example play the 90 minutes.
That said, I think games like Hull, Palace, Cardiff, Sunderland etc at home is where we should have a bit more experimentation.
However Poch is clearly focussed on getting us to Europe, so perhaps doesn't feel it's justified to disrupt a winning side..

I would have taken that at the start of the season.[/p][/quote]I think we do need to have a game where Osvaldo and Gaston for example play the 90 minutes. I'm trying to keep my mind occupied with other issues until at least 7pm - for example, wondering why nearly every performer in Britain - Scotties, Geordies, Brummies, Yorkies, Scousers, Welsh etc - all sing with an American accent.
Probably because they would sound silly using a Chinese or Asian accent?
Rubbish. My uncle Hu, the lead singer of the famous Tianjin group, The Hu, always sounded great. You can listen on u tube to their hit track "Hu let the dogs out."
Hu cares?
Hu do. Because a man with your many talons will always care about his uncle Hu. Hu know it makes sense. Because hu are so soft and sensitive.
Hu Rah!

At 2045 (Norgie time) I will be sat at home watching the match with a pint of Christmas beer (Juleøl) and getting to work on my "hell of a beating" speech :-D

The Yuletide ale's not a bad idea, Norgie. Just don't get yourself too drunk, or you might go doing something silly like getting behind the wheel of your car and going on a roadtrip.

No, no, no! Be a responsible drinker! Don't drink and drive across a border!

Good man. Don't, for christ's sake, bugger off to Denmark again. It all went to rack and ruin. (For a bit, like.)

I hate snow, so here's my suggestion.

I always go to First Row:

www.firstrow.org

If you google First row sports, you might find slightly different web addresses.

Once there, all tonight's possible televised games will come up. Click So'ton-Villa and a few links will appear:

link 1, link 2 etc.

Click on one of those and you should be there - BUT, there will be a mini mountain of ads covering the screen and preventing you from maximising the screen. You need a degree in 'quantumsoddingadrem
ovals' to get past them but I just click on them and, as they open, I shut them quickly. In the end, I get to the game screen. Other people find other sites but I stick with First Row because it's never led to any PC problems, whereas when I've been to other recommended sites, I've had all sorts of trouble.

Good luck!
