J-Rod: It's a massive week for Saints

Basingstoke Gazette: JAY RODRIGUEZ JAY RODRIGUEZ

Jay Rodriguez says victory against Aston Villa tomorrow will set Saints up perfectly for the demanding run of fixtures through to the new year.

Mauricio Pochettino’s side return home for the first time in nearly a month, as they welcome Paul Lambert’s mid-table team to St Mary’s.

Saints are aiming to rebound after suffering back-to-back defeats for the first time this season, following their losses at Arsenal and Chelsea.

The fixtures don’t get much easier for them, though, with Manchester City, Tottenham and Chelsea also at home between now and January 1, as well as trips to Newcastle, Cardiff and Everton.

“It’s obviously a big run of games coming up all of December and we know that,” said Rodriguez.

“I think the game on Wednesday if we get a good result then we can take confidence from that.”

Saints have not lost at St Mary’s yet this season, and they will hope to keep that record intact this week, as Villa and City come to visit.

“It’s a massive week,” said Rodriguez. “I think every game we go into we believe is massive.

“It’s a big part of what we do. We treat every game the same, so it’s something to look forward to and also we know it’s going to be hard work.”

The striker added: “It does feel like it’s been quite a while (since we’ve been at home). It’s always nice to play at St Mary’s.”

Rodriguez is also glad that Saints are back in action so quickly following two defeats.

“For me, personally, I always think it’s the best way to recover from a game, is to play the next game as soon as you can, so hopefully it will be good for us.”

But he is not expecting an easy ride against a Villa team that have only lost once away from home in the league this season.

“They’re a great side,” said the 24-year-old. “We played them last year and they were a great side. Hopefully we can get three points.”

I know he's got great potential, but why does 18-year-old Belgian footballer Adnan Januczaj, who has played a handful of top-flight games, get shortlisted for the BBC's Young Sports Personality of the Year when Saints' top drawer youngsters Luke Shaw and JWP, who have contributed massively to our fantastic start to the season, get completely overlooked? Silly me, he plays for Man Utd, of course. No wonder English football is in such a dire state when our talented young players are offered this sort of 'encouragement'. FA chairman and ex-BBC boss Greg Dyke please note.
Good luck to Saints tomorrow. A win against Villa will see us right back on track.

An important match to see how we cope when the chips are down, we need to get behind and support any XI that we field 100%, this is not the time to be telling everyone that we should have brought more Players in, as that won't make a jot of difference, whatever your opinion.

Looks like there are a few clubs looking for managers at the moment. There's Wigan , Bolton and Sheffield Wed. The usual names are being quoted. I.E. Holloway, Warnock, Di Canio etc etc. They all seem to be overlooking the fact that the Skunts are also looking for one. Now how can these three ever expect to attract any big name managers when they are all in a massive bun fight to get the job at a HUGE club with so much history. I guess they will all have to sit back and wait to see who is left after the laughing stock make their choice.

I am uncertain how J-Rod gets so many quoted articles on this site, but hey-ho all grist for the mill. .. and he's not wrong.

I thought we had some depth in this squad and this will now be tested. I have great faith in Cork and think he is under used, but time will tell.

In other areas Im not sure we have enough cover to maintain "the Southamton Way" when we are under strength. The next month will show this. I was at the Arsenal game and we should have drawn that 0-0, we missed Lovren but Jos did OK. Against Chelsea our boat leaked a bit after half time - I thought the analysis on MOTD was complete cobblers about Ba, it wasnt a miraculous tactical change it was our defensive errors. Poch will know that.

Poch will learn where addiional strengthening is needed. Maybe we have more youth ready to break through? maybe he will have to plunder the coffers again. It's all good though, compare this situation to last season.. I have never been so impressed by our squad.

I am concerned about the goalkeeper situation, Boruc has been worth at least six points to us this season. Gazzaniga is is not at the same level. The two goals he let in against Chelsea were weak, especially the second. His positioning isn't right, his reflexes aren't sharp enough and he certainly isnt good enough with his kicking.

Osvaldo is also a conundrum. He is capable of playing very well, but not necessarily in the high press game we are playing. From what I see on You Tube his previous goals (and there are a lot of them) come from flicks, acrobatic volleys and seizing on defensive errors. He is also a good penalty taker if Lambo is injured. However we are not playing the sort of game that suits him. The elements of chasing back, pressuring the oppsosition when they have the ball and laying the ball off sharply are not his natural instinct.

Still - Poch as managed him before so I assume he knows what he's doing -but in this league the sort of goals I saw on You Tube will be few and far between. The defences here are better than he is used to at club level.

I do however think we should keep faith with him. He is a character and we need some of that. If he gets some breaks and boosts his confidence then he could be key to our success this season. Im still hoping he comes good but Poch has difficult decisions to make.

I have been extremely tolerant with Gaston since he arrived , but my patience has now run out, I think he is excellent but not with our style of game. Sell him asap.

.. and like a lot of people I cannot understand why Poch doesn't talk English on the telly. I know he has spoken English at awards ceremonies and only this weekend there was an article in the Daily Mail about one of our training sessions where it was noted he spoke perfect English to the players during the session. In addition have you noticed that only his responses are dubbed in, he undertsands the questioins perfectly without any interpreter. Maybe it's a confidence thing in front of cameras. Curious though.

Anyway, I have been quiet of latem, and Im glad Ive got all that off my chest. I really hope we stuff Villa. It will push us back into the top 5, restore confidence and get us in a good frame of mind for Man City.

I predict a riot.

That seems like quite a long list. We won't miss Fox, Guly , Ramirez or KD because they don't get to play anyway. We have two very good replacements for Spider and though he will be missed it shouldn't cause too many problems. So the only real area of concern is between the sticks. Gazza needs to show what he can do and they must see something in him or else he would be long gone. This could be a career defining opportunity for him. We need to win against Villa as we have some toughies coming up.

If only Boruc and Spider are going to be missing tomorrow night then we should be capable of playing our usual pressing game because either Davis or Cork are more than up to the job. Personally I would go with Davis because he`s done well when he`s come off the bench and he is bound to be motivated to play well against one of his former clubs.

Good luck to Saints tomorrow. A win against Villa will see us right back on track.
The reason is that we are trying to get him to play for England and hoping this could swing it.

Really? Who told you that? Can't think being shortlisted for an award would be sufficient motive for someone to switch their national allegiance but you never know nowadays.
And who said the BBC wasn't British? Not me, but the last time I looked England was part of Britain so I think the BBC is permitted to consider English sportspeople alongside those of Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. One thing for sure, it isn't the Belgian Broadcasting Corporation.

It was quite a good article, but I have to say - and I am a professional translator and interpreter - that it is ALWAYS easier to understand what is being said in a foreign language (known as the passive language) than to actually speak the language fluently (active language).

Mauricio probably doesn't want to be seen to make any serious errors in English on TV.
