MATCHDAY LIVE - US Portsmouth v Basingstoke Town
This live event has finished
- FULL-TIME - US Portsmouth 1 Basingstoke Town 3
- Manny Williams (2) and an own-goal have Basingstoke in command at the break.
- US Portsmouth pull a goal back midway through the second half.
- Town progress to the third round of the Hampshire Senior Cup.
That's all for tonight folks. Make sure you pick up a copy of the Gazette on Thursday for all of the latest Basingstoke Town news and join me again at Havant and Waterlooville on Saturday.
REACTION - Basingstoke Town manager Jason Bristow
"I thought we approached the game in the right manner and showed a good attitude.
"They scored with their only shot of the game but we should have been out of sight by then. That is the only disappointing thing, that we did not score as many goals as we should have.
"The performance was really good, we got 90 minutes into a few players who needed it and rested others. We played some good stuff and with a bit more conviction we could have had seven or eight goals."
US Portsmouth 1 Basingstoke Town 3
An easy passage through to the third round of the competition for Basingstoke. Let's hope they can take the confidence gained from this through to Saturday's game at Havant and Waterlooville.
Reaction to follow.
Martyn Phillips blasts miles over from the edge of the Town area.
Robbie Matthews pokes a shot at goal but it's an easy save.
Neil Barrett blasts well over from the edge of the area.
Nathan Smart meets a cross from the left but can only head over.
Chances at both ends.
First, a good move ends with Shaun McAuley playing Manny Williams in. He takes the ball around the goalkeeper but runs out of room.
Then, at the other end, Kieran Maylen misjudges a crossfield ball and Al Garrett is in - but the substitute's control lets him down.
Manny Williams plays a neat one-two on the edge of the area and only a good block stops him completing his hat-trick.
Shaun McAuley fires a shot wide from distance.
Hartley Wintney have lost 3-0 to Havant and Waterlooville - but their big game is in the FA Cup on Saturday.
Town have been playing keep-ball for the last 10 minutes or so, toying with the hosts.
SUBSTITUTION - US Portsmouth - Al Garrett on for Sam Steel (79 min).
SUBSTITUTION - Basingstoke Town - Marcus Johnson-Schuster on for Adam Green (73 min).
Possibly another debut.
SUBSTITUTION - US Portsmouth - Martyn Phillips on for Ben Booker (70 min).
SUBSTITUTION - Basingstoke Town - Kezie Ibe on for Wes Daly (70 min)
US Portsmouth 1 Basingstoke Town 3 - Minhaz Uddin (65 min)
MINHAZ UDDIN makes up for his earlier own-goal by scoring at the right end. He shows good feet to beat Kieran Maylen before sending a shot looping over Joe McDonnell and into the top corner via a deflection.
SUBSTITUTION - Basingstoke Town - Kieran Maylen on for David Ray (62 min)
I may be wrong but I think this is a full debut for Maylen, a product of the Town Academy.
Manny Williams almost has his hat-trick, flicking the ball around a defender before firing a low shot across the face of goal.
Hartley Wintney now trail Havant and Waterlooville 3-0.
That's a lovely passing move from Town, which ends with Shaun McAuley firing in a shot that home goalkeeper Pete Houkes does well to save.
The resulting corner causes problems too, bouncing around in the six-yard box before being claimed by Houkes.
Almost a fourth goal. Manny Williams chests the ball down for Robbie Matthews and his volley forces the home goalkeeper into another good save. He's having a decent game.
That's not much better from Manny Williams.
Nathan Smart gets to the by-line and cuts the ball back. Williams does well to beat one defender but then tries to walk the ball in, losing control in the process.
Wes Daly's cross from the right finds the head of Robbie Matthews, who is all alone in the penalty area. However, it's a terrible header, well wide of the target.
A dreadful miss.
Town get the second half started.
Got a lift down here with Town director Sarah Parsons as my car is sick. We saw plenty of Portsmouth due to a few wrong turns. It's a horrible place. Concrete jungle.
US Portsmouth 0 Basingstoke Town 3
Town are cruising here. They look good but the opposition really isn't up to much. Could be more goals in the second half.
US Portsmouth 0 Basingstoke Town 3 - Minhaz Uddin (OG) (45+1 min)
Adam Green is put through down the left. Fellow full-back Nathan Smart busts a gut to get into the area but is just beaten to the ball by MINHAZ UDDIN, who can only steer it into his own net.
Neil Barrett shoots from distance but that's a long, long way over.
Hartley Wintney's game kicked-off at 7.30pm. They trail 2-0 at half-time.
That's US Portsmouth's most threatening attack yet. Mark Robinson shows good pace down the left but Nathan Smart gets a foot in and Town are able to clear.
SUBSTITUTION - US Portsmouth - Sanya Dolo on for Connor Duffin (36 min).
US Portsmouth 0 Basingstoke Town 2 - Manny Williams (31 min)
That's an excellent goal. Wes Daly scoops a free-kick over the US Portsmouth wall for MANNY WILLIAMS, who rifles the ball into the top corner on the half-volley.
Hartley Wintney are now 2-0 down at home to Havant and Waterlooville.
Another good save from the US Portsmouth goalkeeper. Andrew Jenkinson flicked on a ball in from the left and Pete Houkes showed great reactions to keep out Robbie Matthews' poke at goal.
Elsewhere in the competition, Hartley Wintney trail Havant and Waterlooville 1-0.
Manny Williams almost turns provider, so nearly finding an unmarked Robbie Matthews with a clever pass.
US Portsmouth 0 Basingstoke Town 1 - Manny Williams (21 min)
Adam Green does well down the left and his low cross finds MANNY WILLIAMS unmarked to score from the penalty spot.
US Portsmouth goalkeeper Pete Houkes makes two decent saves in the space of a few seconds.
Some neat footwork from Manny Williams sees him beat a defender and the 'keeper does well to beat the striker's shot away.
Williams collects the loose ball and crosses for Robbie Matthews, with Houkes doing even better to push his shot wide diving full-length to his right.
Adam Poxton - US Portsmouth
Left-back Poxton catches Nathan Smart late but that's a bit of a harsh booking.
A cross comes in from the left and Robbie Matthews' header is blocked and the ball smuggled clear.
That should have been the opening goal.
Nathan Smart won a free-kick on the right and with everyone expecting a cross into the middle, Wes Daly played it short to an unmarked Shaun McAuley.
His angled drive was well saved but Robbie Matthews really should have headed the rebound in rather than over the crossbar from six yards out.
Adam Green's corner finds Manny Williams in the six-yard box but the striker can only head over and wide.
That's the first shot of the match, Shaun McAuley slicing well wide from outside the area. As you might expect, Town have been very much on top so far, passing the ball around nicely.
