Hampshire A Cup round-up
WELLY Old Boys progressed to the second round of the Hampshire A Cup with a comfortable 7-1 victory away at Southampton side Capital on Saturday.
Dale Bristow opened the scoring but Ben Nicholls was the star of the show, scoring four goals, with James McIntosh and Matt Button completing the rout, writes Peter Raynbird.
Basingstoke Royals needed extra-time to beat another Southampton side, Chamberlayne Athletic. Ama Bhuller opened the scoring for Royals but the opposition levelled and it was not until extra time that Nick Willcock headed home Chris Hunter cross to seal a 2-1 victory.
Hook Reserves are also through, beating visiting Shanklin 2-1. Dan Mellors put the hosts ahead early on and Lawrence Wright doubled the lead, with the Isle of Wight side netting a consolation late on.
Basingstoke and District Saturday League Division One leaders Pure Spartan are out after losing 4-1 at home to Langley Manor. Ross Mortlock had them level at 1-1 from the penalty spot but the visitors led 3-1 at half-time and added a fourth in the second period, breaking as Pure celebrated a goal that never was.
Popley could only muster 10 players and also made their exit, losing 3-1 to Compton Reserves, Hayden Chalker getting the consolation goal.
Herriard Sports went through without having to play after being given a walk-over by West Wight Reserves, while Welly Old Boys Reserves conceded their trip to the Isle of Wight.
