Whitchurch lose narrowly to second placed Sholing
WHITCHURCH United again proved they can mix it with the big boys in the Wessex League Premier Division as they lost narrowly 2-1 to second placed visitors Sholing.
The home side found themselves two goals down in the space of 25 minutes, as they were unable to deal with the Sholing’s movement upfront.
After that the game settled down and only a double save stopped Scott Hassell from getting Whitchurch on the board.
The home side were forced into a change at half-time as a hamstring injury saw Chris Smalley replaced by Alex Pickering.
Whitchurch then hauled themselves back into the game, as Issac Sedu was brought down in the penalty area and Luke Walker slammed home the spot kick after 63 minutes.
After that both sides had chances with Pa Touray going closest to getting an equaliser for the home side.
After the game Whitchurch manager Jim Macey said: “It Sholing do not win this league I would be very surprised. We just could not match them early, but I was really pleased with the way my players responsed and once again we have proved we can mix-up with big boys in this league.”
Tonight, Whitchurch entertain Cowes Sports in a Wessex League Cup tie.
