Tadley Calleva up to fifth in Wessex League Division One
TADLEY Calleva are up to fifth in the Wessex League Division One table after claiming an impressive 3-1 victory away at East Cowes Victoria on Saturday.
Tadley took the lead after just 40 seconds, Brett Denham tapping home after Matt Aslett’s excellent long-range shot had been pushed onto the crossbar by the home goalkeeper.
They extended the advantage on 20 minutes, Mario Nurse converting from the penalty spot after Denham had been brought down in the act of scoring.
Cowes started the second half strongly and pulled a goal back but Denham made sure of the points on 75 minutes, slotting home after Callum Bush’s shot was not held by the home ’keeper.
Tadley manager Danny Dolan said: “It was a brilliant win and a big three points. It was thoroughly deserved and we did very well.”
Dolan rested players for Tuesday’s Hampshire Senior Cup trip to Christchurch but Denham’s first-half strike gave them something to hold on to. They kept Premier Division Christchurch at bay until the last 10 minutes, when injuries and tired legs took their toll, allowing the hosts to score twice on the break.
“It’s a positive that we are out in a way because we are not going to win the Hampshire Cup and it’s just extra games on top of a busy league schedule,” the Tadley boss said. “Having said that, the boys did really well against a good side.”
Next up is a home game against US Portsmouth on Saturday before Tadley face a trip to Premier Division Sholing in the Wessex League Cup on Tuesday.
“The target is three points at home to US Portsmouth to keep us in the pack and then we have a tough trip to Sholing,” Dolan added. “They are going to finish in the top two in the Premier Division so it will be a good test and we go there with nothing to lose.”
