Whitchurch United secure trip to Eastleigh in Hampshire Cup
WHITCHURCH United will travel to Conference South outfit Eastleigh in the Hampshire Senior Cup after cruising to a 4-0 victory at Hythe and Dibden in the opening round of the competition on Tuesday night.
Shane Lock opened the scoring on 15 minutes, finding the net after Issac Sedu’s shot came back off the post. He turned provider on the half-hour, squaring the ball for Jason Graham, while a clinical finish got Lock his second of the night moments later.
Substitute Ashley Ledger completed the scoring in the second half, much to the delight of manager Jim Macey.
“We looked the part and did a professional job,” he said. “They had the carrot of playing at Eastleigh in the next round and it was much better because when we turn up we are always a threat, especially when we have pace in the side.”
Things had not gone so well three days earlier, Whitchurch being knocked out of the FA Vase after losing 2-0 at Western Premier outfit Hallen, the hosts scoring a goal in either half.
“It was really disappointing because we went into the game on a high after beating Winchester City,” Macey said. “I wanted us to go on a run in the Vase but we did not turn up.”
The Jam Boys return to Wessex League Premier Division action on Saturday, travelling to high-flying Bemberton Heath, while they face a trip to Horndean next Tuesday.
Macey said: “Bemberton are flying high but these are the sort of games you want to play in. It’s what football is all about.
“When we turn up and play at pace we are a match for anyone. We just need to go there with a bit of confidence and play the way we know we can.”
