Saints young guns shine for England
9:58pm Thursday 5th September 2013 in Football
Saints trio Luke Shaw, James Ward-Prowse and Calum Chambers all savoured victory in an England shirt tonight.
Shaw and Ward-Prowse both made their debut for the under-21 side, helping them to a 1-0 win over Moldova in a Euro 2015 qualifier at Reading’s Madejski Stadium.
Left-back Shaw played the entire match, while midfielder Ward-Prowse was substituted after 65 minutes, as new head coach Gareth Southgate celebrated a victory in his first match in charge of the team.
West Brom striker Saido Berahino’s 13th-minute goal was enough to separate the sides, with Shaw coming close to scoring early on, only for his shot to be kept out by a fine save from Moldova keeper Alexei Koshelev.
The England Under-21s are in action again on Monday, when they travel to Finland for another Euro 2015 qualifier, with both of Saints’ 18-year-old stars set to feature again.
Chambers continued his magnificent start to the new season by captaining the England Under-19 team to a 6-1 friendly win in Estonia.
The 18-year-old, who, like Shaw and Ward-Prowse, has been an ever-present for Saints so far this term, played the first half of the match, as Noel Blake’s men cruised to victory.
