Mauricio Pochettino said Saints deserved to beat Sunderland
5:32pm Saturday 24th August 2013 in Football
Saints had to be content with a point against Sunderland today, but Mauricio Pochettino insisted that his team deserved to win.
José Fonte’s 88th-minute header cancelled out Emanuele Giaccherini’s opener, which had arrived after just three minutes of the match.
While the late nature of the equaliser will make many at Saints glad for the point, the hosts had more than enough chances to earn a second consecutive victory to start the season.
“It was disappointing, especially to concede that goal so early on,” said Pochettino. “My team actually really felt it and was really in shock after that.
“We just have to learn from this situation, and we need to be aware that in football you can’t really give anything away.
“Sunderland basically hit us strong in the first chance that they got, so it’s normal that they can continue playing their game how they wanted to set out after scoring the goal.
“But if you analyse the 94 or 95 minutes overall, we fully deserved to win that match.
“Aside from the fact that our first half was not very good, overall we fully deserved to win the match.”
