New signing set to face Saints

Sunderland are set to field their own new signing against Saints tomorrow, after completing a deal for teenage Greek winger Charis Mavrias ahead of their trip to St Mary’s.
Mavrias, 19, arrives from Panathinaikos, where he came through the youth ranks, for a fee of £2.5m and is expected to go straight into the squad this weekend.
In 2010, the player became the second-youngest ever to play in the Champions League – at the age of 16 years and eight months.
In total he has made 70 domestic and European appearances for the Greek club, scoring six goals.
Aside from his two full international appearances, Mavrias has also been capped at under-17, under-19 and under-21 level.
Sunderland manager Paolo Di Canio said: “I like him, I think he is an exciting young talent and I think he has a bright future.
“He is someone who is fast, is full of energy and is also quite technically gifted too.
“I’m glad to have him here and he now gives us other options.
“We need to be able to rotate our players over the course of a long season, and Mavrias is another player added to the squad who can increase our options.
“We have a cup game coming up soon and when you are competing in cup competitions also, you need to have that facility to change the team, to rest players and give others opportunity.
“So I’m very pleased with the signing – we have increased the squad but also signed a potentially very exciting young player.”
