Hartley Wintney FC get off to a great start
HARTLEY Wintney have made an excellent start to their Combined Counties League Premier Division campaign with four points from their first two away games.
They opened up with a 2-1 victory at Bedfont Sports, having to ride an early storm of pressure.
The visitors opened the scoring thanks to a 30-yard free-kick by Jack Coventry and still led at the break.
The home side equalised thanks to their own free-kick, but Hartley were not to be denied a winner which came on 59 minutes from Carl Saunders.
Then, on Tuesday night, Hartley followed up their excellent opening day performance with a 1-1 draw at Badshot Lea, a side that they lost to 6-0 in the corresponding fixture last season.
Once again, Hartley took the lead as Ryan Stephens beat two players in the area and fired home after 55 minutes.
Unfortunately, goalkeeper Craig Atkinson then gave away a penalty and that gave the home side the chance to equalise.
However, despite this, manager Ben Dillon was upbeat and said: “I would have taken four points from the first two games before the start of the season, but we could have had six.
“The game at Bedfont was one of few chances and a real battle. Going to Badshot was always going to be tough and they will be a top-five side this season so I have to be happy with a point.”
Hartley now have two local derbies in the next two games as they entertain newly-promoted Frimley Green on Saturday (kick-off 3pm) and then have a trip to Cove on Tuesday night.
Striker Sam Argent will return to the squad for both games, while Darryl Bloxham is unavailable.
