BASINGSTOKE Town Ladies suffered heartbreak in the dying seconds of extra-time, losing 2-1 to hosts Shanklin in the Southern Women’s League Cup.

The home side made a strong start on the Isle of Wight, taking the lead after just eight minutes, but Basingstoke responded well.

They had several chances before levelling just before half-time, Lindsey Beverley intercepting a poor goal-kick, taking the ball on and firing home from 25 yards.

The second-half was far more cagey and the game went to extra-time, Shanklin breaking the deadlock with just 30 seconds left.
