HOOK and Newnham Basics crushed visiting Portsmouth by 10 wickets, as they bowled them out for 65, to keep the pressure up on Southern League Division One leaders Calmore Sports.

The visitors won the toss and elected to bat at the King George V Playing Fields.

They made a good start reaching 17 in the second over, but from there it was all downhill.

Rupert Armstrong (2-18) bowled James Christian and the just as impressive Shane Brewer (4-28) did likewise in the next over to remove his fellow opener Jordan Palmer-Goddard.

The third wicket in as many overs, saw Armstrong bowl Alex Hammond, as Portsmouth slumped to 17-3.

Fraser Hay (10) and Richard Locke (9) staged a little recovery, as they added 22 for the fourth wicket, before both were victims of Brewer.

A great catch behind the stumps from Josh Buckingham taking the ball low down to right, saw Vikram Dawson depart for a duck, as Brewer picked up his fourth wicket of the innings, leaving Portsmouth 40-6.

Harry Collier suffered the same fate going without scoring, thanks to a catch from Nick Willcock which gave skipper Ben Thane (1-6) a wicket.

Pradeep Bains (11) and Ethan Randell (8) added much needed runs, but having scored 304 against Basingstoke last Saturday, this weekend Portsmouth were all out for 65.

Spin kings Kevin Poulter and Anik Divecha (1-10) finished off the job, with Poulter taking two wickets without conceding a run from his 3.3 overs.

To have any chance of winning Portsmouth needed to take quick wickets, but this never happened as the home side knocked off the winning runs in 9.2 overs.

Thane finished on 41 and hammering eight fours, while Buckingham hit three fours in his 17.

This was Hook’s fifth straight win and a trip to May’s Bounty to face Basingstoke and North Hants in a local derby is next up for them.
