HOOK and Newnham Basics will be looking to continue their climb at the Southern League Division One table, when they travel to the Isle of Wight on Saturday to face Ventnor.

Having suffered three straight defeats to open their campaign, the side which narrowly missed out on the title last season, finally got back to winning ways on Saturday.

This was after they put Tichborne Park to the sword at the King George V Playing Fields.

Seam bowler Shane Brewer and all rounder Jordan Hobday was the Hook heroes in a seven wicket success against the visitors.

Tichborne Park won the toss and decided to bat and were soon in trouble at 24-3.

This was thanks to Brewer (5-51) and Jordan Hobday (2-37), who got amongst the top order.

Opener Martin Cheyney (26) and Thomas Allam (14) looked to have steadied the ship, but Brewer and Hobday made sure the visitors were six down with just 59 on the scoreboard.

Middle order batsman William Allam top scored with 28, but he was caught by Josh Buckingham – one of four catches for the wicket keeper in the game.

Kevin Poulter (2-10) and Rupert Armstrong (1-18) made sure Tichborne never recovered and were all out for 149.

Despite the early loss of Ben Thane and then skipper Matt Love (21), Hook were soon in control, thanks to a great innings by Hobday (79).

Along with Richard Willcock (20) the pair moved the score to 76-3.

It was then left to Hobday and Matt Buckingham (16) to see Hook home with 20 overs to spare.

l Hook second team suffered a seven wicket loss on their travels to Portsmouth and Southsea, being bowled out for 179 in the Hampshire League County Division One.

Liam Doran led the way with the bat scoring 74, but Hook lost their last four wickets for four runs.

Doran also led the way with the ball taking 2-34, but Portsmouth and Southsea were always in the driving seat, after a first wicket stand worth 73.

l Hook III’s had a much better day in Division Three North, as they beat visiting Hungerford by 87 runs.

Elliot Walker top scored with 52 and was well supported by opener Joe Allnutt (37) and some valuable late runs from number eight Jack Campbell with an unbeaten 33.

This helped Hook to a total of 209-8 from their 45 overs.

Campbell then removed one of the Hungerford openers for a duck, but they recovered to 100-4, with Steve Cates (2-11) taking a couple wickets.

It was left to Will Gardiner (3-13) and James Dover (3-33) to turn the screw as Hungerford in the end were all out for 122.

In the Hampshire League Regional Division Two North East, Hook fourth team suffered a four wicket loss at Oakmount.

Hook made 122-9 with Tom Robson the top scorer with 30 not out which proved not enough as Oakmount replied with 113-6, as Piers Armstrong took 3-29 and Andy Hook 2-12.
