HOOK and Newnham Basics lost by 45 runs on the opening day of the Southern League Division One campaign, at newly promoted Calmore Sports.

The home side won the toss and elected to bat and were soon reduced to 10-1 as Jordan Hobday (2-24) bowled opener Mark Lavelle.

Calmore hit back as Tamlyn Goodrich (44) and Ben Johns (20) added 47 for the second wicket, before being parted by Kieran Thomson.

The home side were then hit by further losses as Hobday struck again and Kevin Poulter removed Goodrich.

With Calmore on 109-5, Hook looked in control, but top scorer Jack Rutter (45) and Paul Proudley (23) had other ideas as they added 54 for the sixth wicket.

Both became victims of spinner Anik Divecha who went on to return impressive opening day figures of 5-35 from 9.5 overs as Calmore were bowled out for 189.

Hook openers Ben Thane (21) and Thomson (38) got their side off to a good start as they shared 55 for the first wicket.

The only thing was, this turned out to be the best partnership of the game for the visitors, despite what looked like a solid batting line-up.

They soon found themselves 104-5, as Richard Willcock (9), Matt Love (16) and Jordan Hobday (10) all joined the openers in the pavilion.

Matt Buckingham (15) did help to get the score to 140-7, but from there Hook lost their last four wickets for just four runs as they were all out for 144.

Mike West (3-18), Lavelle (3-18) and Rutter (3-39) were the pick of the home bowlers.

Hook now go in search of their first league win of the season, when they face Liphook and Ripsley at home on Saturday.
