VICTORY for Hook and Newnham Basics in their final game of the season on Saturday, will see them crowned Southern League Division One champions.

Standing in their way is a visit from their arch local rivals Basingstoke and North Hants.

Last weekend, Hook moved back to top of the pile, after leaders Sarisbury faltered and they beat visiting Totton and Eling by an impressive eight wickets.

This was thanks to a superb century by Ben Thane, after strike bowler Shane Brewer ripped out the Totton top order.

Hook will hope to repeat that home success again this weekend and also complete a league double over the Bountymen.

Earlier in the season, at May’s Bounty, Hook won by 81 runs as the home side were bowled out for 118 chasing 199-8.

Last weekend, Basingstoke lost by 51 runs at home, as they were bowled out for 126 chasing Bournemouth’s total of 177.

Looking ahead to the local derby clash, Hook captain Matt Love said: “It comes down to just one last game and being at home is really great. We know Basingstoke will not make it easy for us and we always have good games against them."

Basingstoke skipper Mitch Stokes said: “Since returning I have lost three times to Hook, so it would nice to get a win this time.

"We simply have to bat better - if we do not then we are going to lose."
