Brad Wheal admits he is learning fast in Hampshire’s impressive bowling attack.

The Hampshire seamer is expected to be in an unchanged team for the Specsavers County Championship match against Surrey, which starts at The Oval today.

Wheal took 3-61 in Hampshire’s opening win against Worcestershire and admits he is learning all the time from the likes of fellow South African Kyle Abbott, former West Indies star Fidel Edwards and Gareth Berg.

“It is incredible and a bit surreal at times,” Wheal said. “It is amazing to watch these guys on TV growing up and now sharing a dressing room with them it quite something.

“Walking on the field and looking around and think ‘wow these are ridiculous players around me’ and then there’s me at 21-years-old just wandering around in my element.

“It is incredible to get advice from the likes of Bergy, Abbo and Fidey, from a bowling perspective is priceless – not many people can say they have the opportunity to play with those guys and gain experience by playing with them.

“The guys are very honest. If you are bowling badly they tell you, which is what you need.

“Not in a bad way but just so you know what you are doing if you are not doing well enough or what you should be doing.

“But if you are doing a good job then they will be the first guys to let you know.

“On the field it is about having plans to suit your game. That is something I have learned a lot from Bergy, Abbo and Fidel, they are all distinctive bowlers and you know exactly what they are going to do.

“In that sense it has been a really good thing and has helped me trying to find myself as a bowler and figuring out what works for them so I can work out for myself.”

Hampshire named a 14-man squad for their trip to Surrey, with Chris Wood, Joe Weatherley and Chris Sole added to the team that beat Worcestershire by 196 runs.

Surrey signed Morne Morkel on a two-year Kolpak deal last week but the South African fast bowler is not expected to be fit until June.
